You make your point poorly. The job of the government is to keep us as close to liberty as possible, without it devolving into anarchy. With anarchy, the strong can oppress the weak and self government is not possible.

My reason for promoting Ron Paul is that it's the first step.
When people see how much better life is in a government more focused on liberty then they will (hopefully) be more likely to support increasingly smaller governments until government becomes a thing of the past.
Ideally, yes, what he says in the video is true. But realistically, because of the fact that there are nations looking for resources and willing to do some crazy shit, we need some government. I believe Ron Paul can run it and keep an honest personnel. That is why I support him.
I do think for myself and don't treat Paul's opinion as gospel, but market anarchism isn't going to happen in our lifetimes. Give up promoting pure ancap and focus on something achievable.

Are you suggesting that we should not support any politician because we want to get rid of the government entirely and just go with voluntaryism? That's fine, but we still have tons of existing laws and government that need to be abolished and repealed before we can get to that point. So it seems to me we need to elect leaders to move us in that direction, because currently, our society has a government we need to contend with. We can't just ignore it and hope it goes away.

My reason for promoting Ron Paul is that it's the first step.

I do think for myself and don't treat Paul's opinion as gospel, but market anarchism isn't going to happen in our lifetimes. Give up promoting pure ancap and focus on something achievable.
Ron Paul in 2012, or his successor in 2016, represent achievable goals. And his vision, though just one 'flavor' of libertarianism, is vastly better than the decaying empire we live in today. Insistence on pure idealism will only ensure that nothing changes; it's too easy to dismiss "radicals" in the media...

Are you suggesting that we should not support any politician because we want to get rid of the government entirely and just go with voluntaryism? That's fine, but we still have tons of existing laws and government that need to be abolished and repealed before we can get to that point. So it seems to me we need to elect leaders to move us in that direction, because currently, our society has a government we need to contend with. We can't just ignore it and hope it goes away.

The OP misses the point entirely. Voluntaryist is a word that encompasses the ideals the establishment hates. They already call them "dangerous", fringe and radical ideas. If they are left in charge and there is no Ron Paul to champion the cause those who believe in those ideals will be condemned for it. Seeing as the war on terrorism is just a war on "dangerous" ideas, its no stretch of the imagination that ideas that run counter to the establishment will be considered insurgent.
