  • Remember seeing this on TOTP as a 9 year old and telling my mates at school the next day how great it was. They thought I was off my head. I was right though and it's still brilliant now.

  • fab

  • LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

  • Ron looks like Tesla. :)

  • Ron is totally like o.o

  • some times i with i was in 1974

  • I was 13 that year and I loved the Sparks - great hit!

  • At their height? Listen to their more recent offerings and tell me that they aren't any longer "at their height"!!! Magnifico!!

  • reinforements

  • and of course they NEVER mimed!

  • Love this! :D

  • I still believe the world aint big enough for the Sparks....how weird can you get????

That totally gay singer, that hysteric tune and the Adolf look-a-like......

Still laughing my pants off btw, after all these years!

    More Sparks,I declare!

  • what a face, I must try it when chattin up the ladies

  • @LennonMeringuePie I know. It's brilliant. Ron's face is a classic!

  • Ron Mael for President!

  • Love it.

  • The best little European Art Rock band out of So Cal ever. Little known factoid: prancing, falsetto-voiced singer Russel was the full-back for one of his high school football teams before he and brother Ron got caught up in the proto-glam music scene.

Kimono My House is certainly in my top five albums ever...

  • @norm100066 Don't you mean best American art rock band?! Although having said that, lots of British people I'm sure think they are British as they have virtually nothing to do with American bands.

  • @keith904A -- I did and do. You probably missed the key part of that phrase -- "The best little European Art Rock band out of So Cal ever." -- *out of So Cal* (Southern California). But they were SO far out of the So Cal head space that they really did have to go to the UK and Europe to be appreciated. In fact, it wasn't until their 'new wave' phase that many Californians even knew they existed. But I went to 3 or 4 shows during the 70s by them and there were fans, for sure.

  • @keith904A:

So what the fuck? The sound of the Sparks IS "British",similar as Todd Rundgren´s sound was+is"British"...influenced by the U.S. -"invasion" of British bands in the 60s. Why are people so humorless to connect THAT with national bias? Do you really think Rock´n´Roll is completely American ? The rhythms seem to come from Africa, at least when you have listened to some Bo Diddley or John Lee Hooker, my fuckin goodness.

What is "ART ROCK"? The Sparks wouldn´t define themselves like that.

  • Classic lineup...These dudes turn a simple playback routine ,into high performance art.

  • see "raised on radio glam set"

  • such a brilliant band...they were new wave before there was a catagory called new wave!

  • Everything about this is brilliant and bonkers!

  • Glam era normaly thats why they look like this.

  • no one has dislikes :D

so reason states this IS a good video x

  • 00:14 serial killer.

  • I was only 12 but 1074 was the Sparks. Nobody loved it why> Because it was strange. Well never left the Sparks and the others like bowie Reed and all my New Wave fav.

  • 1:43 Somebody shot the mic,Russell just about survived,being the trooper he was,kept performing.Charisma overload.....brilliant.

    "Shower,another shower"...Partyfears Two....Associates took note.

  • @PAULLONDEN What the fuck's happening in this vid,? potshots at Russell ,and at 0:59 someone's tryin'to lasso Ron's fingers and tryin'to sabotage his performance.

  • This is awesome in some weird kinda weird. The dude at the keyboard is actually making me laugh :)

  • Can you say prerecorded?

  • This guys are the beginning of almost all since the late sixties to now, not only punk.

Remember: one of their early demos was called "Computer Girl" & it´s before Halfnelson demo album in 1968. & There was not Kraftwerk at all. History will put Sparks in the place that they deserve it.

  • Mental, love if, power to the post punk mentals!

  • beatlesNO1 - LOL , thanks hilarious comment....and when he breaks the mic! God, that was funny

  • Charlie Chaplin plays keyboard now, does he

  • loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool this video makes me laugh :D

You are going to die Mr Bond when I press key C. lol

  • @thegcb99

they alway's mimed 2 a backing track on this show

it was infamous 4 tacky miming

    n-joi

  • Love this song. He looks like a cross between Keith Richard and Jon Anderson. Very baroque, is that the style?

  • 0:53 lol

  • KICK ASS! :)) is that lead singer a man or woman hahaha

  • Comment removed

  • lead singer looks kinda like noel fielding

  • brill vid

  • i wish i grew up when they had good music like this :)

  • @blazeyblazer I wish that every day :)

  • Just LoveForMe, I have to point out that it was in the 70's and I was a teenager at the time, but thanks :)

  • From a production/engineering point of view, this song is pure perfection. As subversive a mix as anything Roxy music did. .. Jesus ,listen to those drums, the effect on his voice, the space the guitars live in... brilliant

  • I wonder if that's one of the shoes I still have that Russell is wearing? He got pulled off stage at a gig and I grabbed his shoe, I took it to him but he said I can keep it :)

  • @mlabofski You are AWESOME XD

  • That's what i'm talking about .......RON MAEL....... Killer LOL

  • Timeless ... unlike the new major talents? like NDubz

  • coooooooooool!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah! Awesome! Great memories.

  • I love this song.

  • When I was 10 years old before I was a Sex Pistols fan I listen to MUD,the Rubettes The Sweet,Slade, Roxy Music,Status quo and the Sparks

  • Fantastic

  • Somebody a while ago said the only things that scared them when they were young were rabies and Ron Mael.

  • the man with moustache looks like my dad

  • hitler on keyboards

  • @jadey212001 Haha, yeah!!

  • never get bored of hearing this and introduced sparks to another generation in england and they loved it

  • This track came up in a new film I got today, as part of the soundtrack!

  • Когда первый раз услышал - не понимал... А сейчас - таких бы побольше, чтобы все музыку осознавали. Damn, that's I call music art!

  • Когда первый раз услышал - не понимал... А сейчас - таких бы побольше, чтобы все музыку осознавали

  • Well ahead of there time.

    Good band.

  • i saw this on top of the pops when i was a kid. i was convinced it was hitler on the piano

  • These cunts were the shit for 15 minutes.

  • at 1.47 min the top of his mike pops off :), great group ,

  • I remember watching this in 1974 when I was seven. Ron Mael scared the crap out of me back then. Now it is bloody hilarious to watch this. An absolute classic track.

  • @GOLLYSKYWOOD2 i was a teen at the same time and i had no idea what this was about ... still not really sure bit they were ahead of the curve

  • I know I've seen the keyboardist in newsreel footage of the Nuremberg War Crimes Trails.

  • The face of the singer when he breaks the mic at 1:45.

  • @CALTV1 lmao!!! i missed that first time round

  • @CALTV1 Ha ha! Well spotted, I hadn't noticed that before! I was too busy looking at the keyboard player's face!

  • @CALTV1 I hadn't noticed the mic breaking before either. I was too busy looking at Ron Mael's beautiful face.

  • @armandin2048 You must be a Brit to come out with a daft joke like that?

  • @yortsandthat Oh my god, is it that obvious LOL?

  • Ron's a one off. His brother has those piercing haunting vocals. Remember showing my younger sister this song on a combilation tape when she was 7. She studied art and music. Now 26 her hair changes colour every other month. Works in HMV and is now going through all the sparks albums again, and shifting them to a new generation in the shop on her approval. Sparks, Classic act almost before their time. I used to have a Rhodes 73 electric piano, which this track reminded me of. Jay.

  • Sparks is pure magic, this line up from Kimono My House was amazing.

  • I forgot just how good this song is...Ron always had great charisma even if he looked a weirdo...it's really funny the way he flicks his eyebrow up about 1.30...Russell was great too and in this song reminds me of Mick Jagger :)

  • When I was a small boy I was led to believe that the pianist was Hitlers son. The shame of some people. This is great it really takes me back thanks.

  • i can see where your coming from with the rotten look..also this was the first rumblings of punk..74...the music was punk for sure..you put this tune in 1976 and it would not be out of place..

  • i can see where your coming from with the rotten look..also this was the first rumblings of punk..74...the music was punk for sure..you put this tune in 1976 and it would not be out of place..

  • @yabass "first rumblings of punk" Don't make my arse laugh. People like Bowie, Bolan, Iggy, New York Dolls etc would have something to say about that. Oh and Velvet underground. I like Sparks but don't over egg the pudding.

  • @hearditman

yeah blah dee blah yeah im aware that the true inspiration for punk was the americans..what i was sayin was..this tune came out at the death of glam rock and you can tell by its construction that it had more of a punky edge to it and that maybe it was a fore taster of where music might be heading....thats all..f*k me even i can see Sparks didnt create punk..hahaa....thats my arse laughing.....

  • @yabass Mmm, well, dunno if I agree. Still at least our arses had a laugh.

  • It´s funny how he Destroys his Mic at 1:44 :D

  • whos the drip playing the keys

  • @trumpton77 That's Ron.

  • Sweet.

  • Omg, it is Goebbels (only with a certain mustache)

  • Ron Mael inspired punk. Shut your holes, it's true. Johnny Rotten stole his "STARE" and killed it. Ron can still get away with it and look cool and rebellious. No Ron, no Sex Pistols. No punk.

  • @Whistlechops he inspired British punk for sure, but American punk was where he originally cut his musical teeth from listening to bands like The Standells, The Seeds and Electric Prunes.

  • Comment removed

  • @Whistlechops reminds me of the classic joke: Q: How many punks does it take to change a lightbulb? A: A million. One to screw it in and 999,999 to argue about who did it first.

  • @Whistlechops He didn't invent a way of pulling a funny face. Anyone could fucking do it

  • @TheYTChronicles But they don't, do they? Watched this when I was a kid and he genuinely crept me out, along with the demented music (in a good way lol). I'm watching it now and still wondering what plans for world domination he is scheming up.

I agree with Whistlechops, Johnny Rotten borrowed and butchered this one.

  • @TheYTChronicles Anyone could, but noone did ;)

  • @Whistlechops are you actually retarded, this barely classifies as punk. the sex pistols will wipe the floor with the sparks in terms of punk, if maybe not music

  • @TheBren93 moron

  • @Whistlechops

Lydon got his stare from meningitis. The Sparks were amazing but they didn't have all that much,if anything, to do with evolution of punk.

  • Thanks m8.Theres another copy of this version on tube thats been ruined by overlay of some shit tune. Cheers for this version.

  • Thank you for putting this up. It's a great song and a great performance.

  • Nice one mate, the others version of this fell under the WMG axe so good to see it back again

  • @VirgLondon2 I don't know how that could be since the song has never been issued on WMG, they are owned by Universal Music which distributes Island Records. :)

  • Liked it,especially at 1:45 when the mike falls to bits.
