Remember seeing this on TOTP as a 9 year old and telling my mates at school the next day how great it was. They thought I was off my head. I was right though and it's still brilliant now.
The best little European Art Rock band out of So Cal ever. Little known factoid: prancing, falsetto-voiced singer Russel was the full-back for one of his high school football teams before he and brother Ron got caught up in the proto-glam music scene.
Kimono My House is certainly in my top five albums ever...
@norm100066 Don't you mean best American art rock band?! Although having said that, lots of British people I'm sure think they are British as they have virtually nothing to do with American bands.
@keith904A -- I did and do. You probably missed the key part of that phrase -- "The best little European Art Rock band out of So Cal ever." -- *out of So Cal* (Southern California). But they were SO far out of the So Cal head space that they really did have to go to the UK and Europe to be appreciated. In fact, it wasn't until their 'new wave' phase that many Californians even knew they existed. But I went to 3 or 4 shows during the 70s by them and there were fans, for sure.
So what the fuck? The sound of the Sparks IS "British",similar as Todd Rundgren´s sound was+is"British"...influenced by the U.S. -"invasion" of British bands in the 60s. Why are people so humorless to connect THAT with national bias? Do you really think Rock´n´Roll is completely American ? The rhythms seem to come from Africa, at least when you have listened to some Bo Diddley or John Lee Hooker, my fuckin goodness.
What is "ART ROCK"? The Sparks wouldn´t define themselves like that.
I was only 12 but 1074 was the Sparks. Nobody loved it why> Because it was strange. Well never left the Sparks and the others like bowie Reed and all my New Wave fav.
@PAULLONDEN What the fuck's happening in this vid,? potshots at Russell ,and at 0:59 someone's tryin'to lasso Ron's fingers and tryin'to sabotage his performance.
This guys are the beginning of almost all since the late sixties to now, not only punk.
Remember: one of their early demos was called "Computer Girl" & it´s before Halfnelson demo album in 1968. & There was not Kraftwerk at all. History will put Sparks in the place that they deserve it.
From a production/engineering point of view, this song is pure perfection. As subversive a mix as anything Roxy music did. .. Jesus ,listen to those drums, the effect on his voice, the space the guitars live in... brilliant
I wonder if that's one of the shoes I still have that Russell is wearing? He got pulled off stage at a gig and I grabbed his shoe, I took it to him but he said I can keep it :)
I remember watching this in 1974 when I was seven. Ron Mael scared the crap out of me back then. Now it is bloody hilarious to watch this. An absolute classic track.
