Actually, the program CBS scheduled at 5:45 was "WILDERNESS ROAD", a short-lived sustained adventure series featuring the exploits of Daniel Boone involved with a "typical pioneer family"....

John Daly has the historical significance of being the CBS newsman who announced both the Pear Harbor attack and FDR's death. In between, he was a war correspondent for CBS News. He later went on to host What's My Line and was ABC's first television news anchor.

Some of his micromanagement of economic policies with Morgenthal were dubious, but his leadership on the eve of the war and during the war was excellent. Technically he waged an undeclared naval war in the N. Atlantic, and could of been impeached, but the was right to take on Hitler.

The announcement was made around 5:45 PM ET. At the time, CBS (and the other networks) ran kid-oriented "adventure" shows aimed at the kid audience following school. That's why the program interrupted was "Dan'l Boone". The announcer was John Charles Daley later to be the moderator of "What's My Line?" Daley had been the chief newsreader for CBS News in 1941, so he made the Pearl Harbor announcement. He then went on to cover the war in the Pacific, returning to his old job in early 1945.

A shame Roosevelt did not live to see the final surrender of Germany and Japan. His New Deal programs fixed everything, except employment, and his leadership during the war ended the Great Depression altogether and made the US more powerful than it had ever been before.
