You are of course right to say it's pointless to photograph a vertical oil painting with a horizontally held camera. I guess we'll have to conclude that the Mona Lisa can not be displayed appropriately on modern time displays, as long as they can't be tilted vertically.
Please people. All modern displays are widescreen. Do not record videos / shoot photos vertically.
