Irish defence forces use this missile system . They use alot of Swedish manufactured weaponary .

RBS70 system is not good for real air defence. When plane attack you from 30 m, you have at most 1-2 sec. to lock plane and shut it down. With RBS70 you need at least 5 seconds of visual contact with the plane (distance 3km; rocket speed 600m/s; plane speed from you 0m/s=5 sec, in real situation 10-12 sec.) Infra red MANPADS are much better for real war-time air defence (Igla-S, Stinger, Mistral, Strela 2M).

We use that system here in Finland... I have ran that fucking sight on my back too many times.. And actually you need only two people to carry that device. One takes the sight and the other one takes the stand and the BOLIDE ;)

Further more Fixed wing like A-10 and Su-25 are much more potent to one's amour column, they too using low level approach. The missile flies wherever the operator points the laser beam, to there need to be a clear line of sight to the target. And when the missile detects something that seems to be a vehicle (metal/heat/etc) it explodes and kills the target.

well...well they don't take in consideration that the newest Fighter/bombers or plain bombers don't need to fly less than 15000ft to drop a JDAM or any other bomb and if they do bombers such as the Rockwell B1B fly so low and so fast the gunners wont have time to take aim and shoot plus the B1B's radar signature is less than 4meters SQ.

Well the radar cross section, has nothing to do with the ability to shoot it down with an optical seeker, quite the contrary. B1B i a very big aircraft, and thus easy to see and target. but at the same time it is fast, if annything its the speed that saves it.

Well even tough i have done my militaryservice in the only Air defence regiment in sweden. I have no personal experience with Rb70. From what i have seen and read it seems to be a bit limited in its succes with modern aircraft. alltough the human factor must be put in concideration, because it makes the system somewhat unpredictable. Concidering it's still purchased, it obviously serves a role in modern warfare.

Yes, but don't forget this is man-portable. And 5000 is really good for a man-portable AAMS. If you want to take out even farther targets, you are going to need a bigger missile, and a better missile targetting system, such as ship-mounted AA missile.

You could say that about the ZSU-23-4 but what happens if it's using optronic or infrared sensors? If a jet is going low it runs into a Shilka it's game over. Same situation with this system, it's small and portable so how is an enemy radar going to detect it. Having a radar system is a bit fail though because good attack jets would be able to detect the radar and fire HARMs or run a gauntlet around it, but none the less it'd be perfect against helicopters and less advanced fixed wing aircraft.
