you're suppose to break the bolt with the ratchet first, most bolts are torqued so high that you shouldn't expect the ratchet to loosen it, it just helps you get it off faster

I've had a 3/8 air ratchet for a few years, my biggest complaint is that its very loud. it makes my ears ring. I have to wrap the exhaust with a rag to muffled the noise.
