  • gracias loco

  • either take your socks off or put some shoes on. seriously tho look at this guys swollen fingertips he plays a lot . nice lesson ty

  • interesting video. thank you.

  • Great vid, nice and clear and easy to follow, in fact, you even make it look easy! Your amp hums almost as much as my old Marshall from about '62. :)

  • @gugfuf : @gugfuf : I have fixed the hummmm since then. It was a power capacitor.

  • @gugfuf probably more the strat than the marshall....those aren't humbuckers you know.

  • I love this song. Gonna practice it now instead of studying my neuro ethics course =)

  • Nice one ! Congratulations ... my hig from Brazil !

  • Search this site for King Crimson Red Live 1995. You will see that for the main riff, both Fripp and Belew do a quick slide up and down one fret. No bending from either guitarist.

Nice vid, all around. Glad you tracked down your buzzing amp problem.

Very cool to see good tunes like this being taught!

  • @chaosIsTheOnlyPower : Yes, I have seen that "slide" since making this lesson video. I played it like I heard it, and it sounded like a bend. No biggie! Thanks for watching! =)

  • @motorpsych0 This is the first song I learn on guitar and its all because of you. Thanks!

  • @Bagas : Glad I could help! =)

  • @chaosIsTheOnlyPower : Yes, I have seen that "slide" since making this lesson video. I played it like I heard it, and it sounded like a bend. No biggie! Thanks for watching! =)

  • Indeed your lesson in very fine indeed! Glad to see folks enjoying this music and making the videos. With each new version we all learn a little bit more.

    Thanks for posting!

  • I love KC fans! you're all SOOO serious!okay breakfast lesson is done, time to change into lunch attire!!!!! LOL!!!

  • just two strings, but it takes some talent to play it and it sounds great like Fripp.

  • OK, so what key would you say this is in? F? E flat? C? I know one thing for sure, Fripp would have never bent the strings up a half step in unison for those progressions. Try using your pinky to jump the half step instead. I think you'll find it a bit more true to form. I grew up with this shit. Trust me. Love your take man!

  • It's kinda funny, if someone ran across this they'd be thinking, wtf. It's actually pretty thurough and on the money.

  • LOL, yeah...I'm a certified hack, making a lesson since my minions demanded it! =D

  • I love that you shirt and pants are the same colour. It makes you look like an inmate... It's kinda cool...

  • really nice, helps a lot :D

nice fender too, i love them XD

  • Wow, that's a great one, thank god that someone is making king crimson lessons (fripp is majestic). Thanks!

P.S.: Maybe any tabs on this?

  • Sorry man...no tabs. I play by ear.

    Thanks for watching!

  • How do you make the buzzing sound?

  • The "buzzing" sound, I think you are asking about, is the overdrive channel (gain set to 8) on my Mesa amp. The other hummmm is 60 cycle hum from the wall socket. I have fixed this recently.

  • Thank you

  • A really clear lesson (don't copy the technique though kids!). Nice one.

  • Yeah kids, I am not a professional!

    Professional hack, maybe!

    Thanks, digitalis7! =)

  • very nice!!!!

  • Thanks, axzck!

  • Why not use your pinky?

  • You can use the pinky...whatever works for you!

    Thanks, Trubador24!

  • This is the right angel to show lessons

    !!!

  • Yeah, I almost fell over making this video.

  • Why has this been pulled!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I watched this video and played guitar.

I got nice time from your lesson.

    Thank you!

  • Glad this helped!

  • For clarification....from what I've read, Fripp didn't invent New Standard until the early 80s, so he's right to play this in standard....

And this is pretty cool, man. i'll make an attempt to learn it, certainly.

  • Cool! Glad you are inspired just like I was when I first saw this played!

  • Dont worry about thease dorky comments.I play it different than you.And we both proably play it different than Fripp. Its called interpetation.I love your take on it.Other than that Bla bla bla bla bal.

  • Yeah man, I hear 'ya!

    Peace~

  • Real good, though I am pretty sure that main riff is hammered and pulled off, not bent into.

  • Yeah, I've seen some guys play it that way. I just play it like I hear it! =)

  • Nice mate, easy to follow. Good job.

  • Thanks, chinesefake! =D

  • Excellent, Motorpsych0! Have you tried this in Fripp's New Standard Tuning? Reason I ask is because, I can't figure out his NST.

    Thank you!!!!

  • No, I have not. I just figured it out in normal tuning, since that's what I would need to do if I ever performed this live.

Glad you found the lesson useful, man!

  • I watched 24 seconds and I have to say come on you have a pinky for a reason, use it. Then I randomly moved to about 6:00 minutes in and you were arpeggiating some major chord and youe using your pinky instead of the third finger whats up with you man, again during the solo bit bad fingering who taught you? All and all though your making it work so ok but come on.

  • Hey man, I never took lessons (can you tell? =D ), so I just play it like I hear it. I guess this lesson is good for showing where the notes are...not how to actually 'play' the song.

    Peace~

  • I should give you credit learning it by ear as opposed to using tabs is great, didnt mean to sound like a total dick by the way this is my kid brothers account Im to lazy to re sign in to Teamshakenbake but yeah good job

  • That's cool.

  • gracias!

  • You are welcome!

  • that view is the best i ever seen. very helpful

  • Glad it helped, man!

  • You have something against using your pinky? It makes playing notes that span 4 frets a lot easier.

  • thats what i was thinking

  • @badger500 Ja, I just don't think he's ever really used it. PINKY TIME BRO

  • jaja

    cool!!!

  • Thanks, lame!

  • thank you!!

  • You're welcome!

  • tell us what's correct then...I must be tone deaf?

  • No, it's not. Look up the tabs.

  • There is no bend in the main riff, it's a slide up to the forth fret and back to the third.

  • In all the transcriptions, it's a bend. In the recording, you can tell it's a bend. Whatever you say though.

  • That repetitive part which starts at 6:41 and accompanies the 'slow solo' or middle section doesn't consist of the same two notes throughout, I think.

  • OK, I'll revisit that section. Thanks, man!

  • Fripp's 'skysaw' sound is almost impossible to get with modern multi-effects boxes or pedals. I use an old RAT with the distortion knob flat out. Careful with the master volume on your amp! Also, it helps if you don't play a Strat-like guitar - you don't want any twang in there. Any guitar with humbuckers is preferable, imho.

    Great job!

  • Thanks, minkofan!

Yeah, when I made this video, I didn't have a guitar with humbuckers. I do now, so maybe I'll remake it someday. =D

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, I get the old Fripp sound with my SG or Jazzmaster (Jazzcircuit), a chorus pedal, and fuzz. The actual "sky-saw" sound you are referring to is not the "skysaw", which was used on later recordings with Eno and Sylvia.

  • The intro of the song sounds so modern! For a couple years, the intro was all I had heard, and I thought it was something from one of their recent albums; but then I found out it's from a '74 album!

    RF= ahead of his time

  • Yes, Fripp was WAY out there for the times!

  • You need a Noise Gate

  • I like it noisy! =D

    Thanks for watching, CrossRhodes!

  • I love how the song's chords are so musically unstable. Just listen to each chord. There's no "beauty" in the chords, not like what you would hear in a jazz song.

Musically speaking, this is one of the darkest songs ever. If anyone were to play these chords in the middle ages, they would get burned at the stake.

  • That's the magic of Robert Fripp! He went where others did not go...musically speaking. And, he's still out there somewhere today. =D

    Thanks for watching, prasiddha!

  • this is infinitely better than any guitar tab for the song out there, thanks a lot man

  • You're welcome, man!

    Keep rockin'!

  • fantastic Robert, great way to make a gtr lesson. Cool to hear you speak too:D

  • Thanks, Miguel!

When I hear myself speak, I am reminded to refrain from talking in future videos. I now use captions! =D

    Do play guitar, too?

  • fantastic video

definitly one of the most helpful guitar lessons on youtube and its a great song

cheers, this is gonna come in handy for my collage interview

  • Very cool, catchthebre3ze!

I'm glad this will help with your future plans!

It's surprising how simple this song is to play, yet a complete mystery to most players (originally, me too).

Hello from Texas, USA! I plan to visit Ireland someday (start with County Antrim).

    Peace~

  • If more songs had instructions like this, I would know a lot more songs. Great video. Thanks for posting it.

  • You are very welcome, KeroseneFlames!

It would be cool to see your cover someday on YouTube. No pressure, man. Just have fun!

  • Thanks for posting, very clear and easy to understand. Another great mystery explained!

  • Yeah, it was a mystery to me, too.

But once I had it figured out, it was obvious that it was much simpler to play than I thought.

    Glad this helped you!

    Peace~

  • Dude, this is the best lesson on YOUTUBE. Everyone should have this camera angle! It's perfect.

  • Thank you very much, RobEye79!

I got the idea from another guy, but his viewpoint was from an angle. I thought "why not look straight down on the fretboard?". That's what you see anyway!

Hey, post your cover some day. I'd like to see it! (no pressure, have fun!) =D

    Peace~

  • killer, great work!!

  • Hey, post a vid if when you learn it!

    Thanks, queteimportaguey!

  • Very interesting to see it in slow-mo, thanks very much.

One thing - the bend. I always bend it too, for ease, but watching them perform it live, I think they just slide up to the notes - very difficult!

  • Yeah, I have observed the "slide up" too. But to me, a bend is much cooler. Bends are more emotional than a slide, especially in a tune such as this.

    Thanks for watching, t3hpez!

  • just one tiny question, when you play the mainriff the second time you are doing a note at the end, some bending thing. think you passed out to cover that in the video. and if so how do you play that thing?

  • Let me know where this is (or isn't) by giving me the "time mark window" (ie: 1:25 - 1:30). I will review the video, and then be able to provide an answer.

  • 3:55-3.15 on your red cover (not lesson)

Some sort of a bendnote after the riff, nothing really hard but it's hard to see on your video.

is it just that you move up two frets, or what do you do?

  • I demonstrate this bend at the end of this video lesson (at 9:51). I do only one bend here, but there are two bends, depending on the verse.

I am playing only two strings:

Index finger on the B (2nd) string, 5th fret.

Third finger on the G (3rd) string, 7th fret, with a bend so they meet at an E note.

I also repeat this at the F note position during the next bar.

    Hope that makes sense.

  • yes it does. thanks:)

  • DANG! I didn't know this was here! THANKS MAN!

This is the best angle for yeaching. This mixed with the other one is a HUGE help.

This is totally killer. You just made my millenium.

Wish I could buy you a beer!

  • Awesome!

You didn't see the video posted originally because it was set to "Private". I'm happy to know there are others who get a kick out of Fripp and the whole King Crimson vibe! Maybe I should make it a public video?...

I'll drink a beer tonight in honor of all things KC!

Post a video performance of this someday, bro!

    Peace.

  • Best heavy metal song ever. But when I look at the videos of Crimson playing it, they play it kinda differently. Must be because of the New Standard Fripp Tuning. ACGDEA. Thanks.

  • Hmmm...

I am using standard tuning here, which feels comfortable to me. I will study the KC videos to understand what Fripp is doing here.

This is my interpretation of the chords, of course. I'm sure there are many "inflections" I have missed.

    Anyway, I hope it helps!

    Peace.

  • And btw, my bad;

    it's CGDAEG

...Crafty Guitarists Do Always Eat Good

  • What do you think of the "viewing angle"?

I am curious to know if this visual feels natural or not.

  • Visual angle was very helpful. Thank you.

Now do the bass parts of Red. PLEASE! They are just as good as the guitar parts. Thanks!

  • Oh man, you're killing me! ;-)

There is a YouTuber named "etchedincold" that does the bass line. Search for "king crimson - red". He does a great job!

    Peace.

  • this is very good, this helps me with lots of parts. tried to look at your video "red" but it was hard.

Thanks again for covering this masterpiece.

  • No sweat. bro!

It was kinda fun to make. I need more experience doing things like this.

    Hope it helps!

    Peace.

  • hehe, yeah then i'm thinking of 21st century... but now I'm gonna try this one. but hehe my b string went off, totally unexpected:)

  • OUCH!

  • What do you think of the "viewing angle"?

I am curious to know if this visual feels natural or not.

  • I actually found it easier to copy, I don't now why noone els is doing it like that, maybe it was hard to get the camera in that position. well it was good thouhg.

  • Excellent.
