How long does it take to become a registered nurse in Australia?
In our country, its 4 years of continuous study (academic + clinical). Nursing degree earned here is called Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Recently, an additional year was added, making a BScN here - 5 years.
No nurse who studied less than 4 years/ who did not study in a classroom or clinical setting can practice here.
@N10ZT it's 3 years here in Australia, and in the fourth year you go into a graduate program (1 year) where you get to work/practice in your area of interest, such as paeds for a number of months - usually 3 months within that year before you can move into another area of practice. It's meant to ease you into the workplace has a new grad.
I think NP's contribute enormously to the health care, of course some doctors will feel they ll lose jobs, complete stupidity, it is a different scope of practice, these professionals are highly trained, widely used in the United States and Canada.
Thanks for these NP Films Nick, can you tell me what are the requirements before you can enrol to the course of Nurse Practitioner? presently, i am a registered nurse and it interest me this NP thing. It's just its not clear to me the requirements in order for me to enrol to this course...thanks.
this information can be found on your state health department's website NSW is nursing and midwifery office NAMO or in Victoria is Department of human services - but you need a masters in your area i am sure on that- good luck we need more NPs - so please do it!
a smart cookie! most nurse practitioners have at least a masters degree in their area but a nurse practitioner with a PhD would be called a doctor just to confuse the issue
There is a trend in the NP field that will require NPs to have a clinical doctorate (the DNP). Many NP programs will no longer offer the masters FNP in a short time; but will require the doctorate. DNP = Clinical doctorate; PhD = training in generating theory and research. Check out NONPF for more info.
Id like to say one thing,I went to a minute clinic in Nevada when i had an ear infection. I can say that I had enough time to talk to the NP and she listened to concerns of mine. I love being able to go to a NP now, because unlike my doctor they don't act like you are a nuisance. You are a patient with concerns, and i was happy with the service.
Thanks for giving me an opportunity to learn about what a nurse practitioner is and how they work. They are doing a very fantastic work and I hope to be able to work as a nurse practitioner in near future~
I have been an NP in the US since 1988. There is a lot of education that must be done, both for the public, as well as other health care professionals. It's correct, we are not doctors, nor are we nurses. We bring a needed and unique blend of each to the exam table. Thanks for creating these films.
Thanks for taking the time to give us feedback. Nurse Practitioners are another health professional increasing the quality of patient care. It has been a battle in Australia but now they are legislated they are here to stay and it is truly an exciting time for nursing- it's been awesome to witness it and film it, and to meet the pioneer amazing nurse practitioners.
After finished my course I would love to work in Australia because it seems to be a fascinating and modern country...and learn more about nursing...and improve my English...of course... lol
In my University I can obtain preparation for providing care of excellent quality, both in terms of health promotion and disease prevention - throughout the life cycle, supported by a strong ethical and deontological learning and practice
Preparation for further education in various fields of expertise...extensive clinical practice.
I'm a nursing student from the Portuguese Catholic University...
In my country a degree in Nursing has a duration of 4 years and is organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process as a 1 st round of polytechnic training in the field of Nursing.
It was created in conjunction with a 2 nd round of studies of 2 years (Masters), which is characterized by a strong transdisciplinary and the deepening of theoretical concepts and practice advanced nursing in specialized clinic areas.
Hi thanks for taking the time to comment on our above film Nurse 1.1. It is very obvious to me that you have not watched the entire film. Nurse Practioners are not doctors, they are nurse practitioners. I am unsure why you are saying they are dumb given they have at least a three year degree and a masters degree.

Nurse Practitioners are a contradiction in terms when it comes to intelligence. Their lobby is able to fool the public that these ill trained morons are actually able to perform to the ability of Doctors. Nursing is needed, but Nurse Practitioners are dumber than a box of rocks and their legacy of stupidity and incompetence is allowed to continue because of thier powerful lobby.
this is really a good move as far as nursing in Australia is considered...good work!!

Is Australia going to introduce Nurse Anaethatists (CRNS) like the USA? I think it would be a very good idea, much like the Nurse Practioner.

The guy who is the mouthpiece and vp of the AMA in this vid comes off as a complete tool. Honestly does he actually know what he's saying?
Then again Aussie males are stereotypically mysoginists.

Ah yes but can I say we had a male NP in the film so we can't all be misogynists! Thanks for watching

In Portugal nurses are registered in the Portuguese Nursing ORDER and recognized by ICN - International Nursing Council.
Nurses can't be compared with doctors because their roles are different in all Health Systems.
In Spain and England Nurses can prescribe medication.
