another good idea is to let those dollars store scrubbies and sponges soak a few days and be rinsed a few times....as they can have chemicals from plastic manufacture process.... new plastic used with water needs to off-gas
General rule of thumb is the output pipe should be twice the diameter of the input.
Another thing to consider is putting a venturi into your pressure output in the filter to add air bubbles for aerobic bacteria. Im going to try an aeration tower setup on my new 44gallon filters. Not sure on media though for that size yet.
@twisto Sounds like you need a skimmer box. You can either buy them online or I'm sure someone has tried a homemade model. It's either that or netting the leaves out every few days. In the fall when you're shutting your pond down, cover it with a net. It will save you a lot of cleanup time in the spring. Best of luck.
watched part 1. great design. the only thing is im in psain and i dont know what they call bulk heads here but i'll try to find it. this filter method is purely mechanical? you dont add activated carbon?
Nah nah why bother with output pipe. Stand filter on side of pond cut slit where output pipe should be. Disguise filter with any medium to match pond.
dude, you rock!! i followed your step by step methodology to create my filter, and it works excellent! I used a Rubbermaid rectangular tub (the size was recommended for my 2000 gal pond) and powerhead does about 1200 gph. I used an 1 ¼” inlet and 2 ½” outlet hard piped to my waterfall 10” away… looks amazing! The best part is the that the water is clear already!
Thanks again to you and your very well done informative posting…
So...any more info on your filter? You made two videos, and it seems like that was it. Great videos---but how did the season end? What is happening now? Is there a part 3 video? Thanks!
i know this video is a bit old but if you are going to have such a long input hose another disadvantage is that your powerhead is rated at 500 gph but gravity and distance of the hose reduces it probably to near 300gph..

just use a smaller pump or adjustable pump instead of getting larger bulkheads.

Nope. Cant be on the output side. Unless you put the whole filter underwater, or make it a sealed system.

Couldn't the pump be on the output side? I think I'll try that.
