He smiled when the rest of the quintet went livid over not getting paid for the NAACP Scholarship gig at Carnegie Hall. Hancock and Shorter almost left the building. Tony Williams was so unlike any drummer with Miles before or after. Listen to "Eighty One."
uuggghhh those double stroke rolls! I saw him perform at Yoshi's in Oakland before he passed. he was sick with the flu but still burned the house down!
Williams had so much confidence and maturity in his playing at such a young age. Another case for reincarnation. Having all of that ability and knowledge at such an early age.
Almost every video on youtube with over 20,000 has at least one dislike, it amazing that these videos of miles and tony don't! Shows you how much people respect and love this stuff
Look at how effortless Tony makes drumming. Only 2 TRUE drum prodigies in my opinion, Tony and Buddy Rich. I mean look at when Tony takes the tempo to tearing speed, his hand is like jelly, AMAZING!!! Truly a legend. If I could ever be 1/100th of what Tony was, I would be happy!!!!
And what I would do to have that ride, so so crisp!!!
Uh, "Miles"? Where might he be? The choco hipster at 00:05 looks a little out of his element; bemused confused, wondering when the heavy bass and bass drum jungle beats come in
@MMMuller I know it's Herbie Hancock, your moron. I was just commenting on Hancock's seeming befuddlement. My question remains: where is Miles Davis in this video, you stupid cunt?
I think the person who put this on made a mistake. And dude Herbie is just in his element. If you look his eyes are closed, he is just groovin' to the solo man!! no need to rip on Herbie!!!!
This time and the months after that ensue have produced the most powerful music (and drumming) I can find.
by 1965, tony staring incorporating these sick-ass 8th note triplets that contrast with the uptempo flatness or evenness of the 1/8 note like a wave that crashes beautifully and strongly on the shore. at 1:28 for example, he plays "ul-let-trip-ul." incorporating that shit was entirely original and sick as fuck.
It's like the joke Louie Belson tells about dying, and hearing in heaven, a tremendous Buddy RIch drum solo. "That's Buddy isn't it", asks Louie", ( but let's vary the punch line here to suit). "No, man", says St. Peter, "That's not Tony WIlliams. That's God, He just thinks He's Tony Williams."
I like tony. I dunno I like roy haynes more. Tony's style is dope but i feel like his playing is too , whats the word... unrelaxed. Its really tense where haynes ride shit is way loose and relaxed but still fast, ya dig?
Ted Hawks of LA is one of THE greatest jazz drummers ever. As good as Tony, Elvin, Art or you name it. I only saw him once and I know playing and he was a KILLER. Someone tell me where is TED HAWKS? Is he living in Paris? How do we find his son Guy?
I recently heard a story that when they met Tony went up and told him straight, 'man you need to practise more.' I mean, balls aside, he was really onto something right? after that Miles powered like mad into electricity and there he plays like he owns bits of heaven. You know who else was a Beatles fan? Buster Keaton. Oh yeah.
i read this in the Miles Davis biography. Miles tells this story :D and he really come back to practice more :D (he was a genius but still using cocaine and got drunk
does anyone know how old tony was in this clip? im pretty sure he was like 17 or something when he first started playing with miles...one of the best if not the best jazz drummers
A sign of true mastery: Herbie Hancock laying out (not playing) till his solo. It's as much what you don't play as what you do play--a lot of people don't understand that, both then and now. This is a really burning vid--110% fantastic--thanks for posting this.
I wanted to jump out of my seat when you sd you knew Ted's son. Where is Ted now? Ted Hawks is THE most underated jazz drummer ever in history period. I love youtube forever. I didnt know he had a son.
You could see Tony was already on his way to greatness. I also forgot how great Jackie was too on this. Does anyone remember how great drummer Ted Hawks from LA (via Paris)? Please someone say they remember him.
I met Ted's son, Guy, at Los Angeles Valley College, in one of their jazz bands. Guy was also a drummer. He told me that he was Ted's son. That was back in about 1979, I believe. Guy was a good player!
the Isle of Wight vid is one of the most amazing things i've ever heard, the chemistry is so intense and Miles sensitivity to all the players, the sound overall, and Miles direction and injection of intensity, concepts and soul is unique. love that vid.
hello my freind,i just read miles's autobiography.Very revealing,a very complex man,at times probably not a very nice person, but a genius.took no s..t from anyone!its well worth the read,as its his view on things and not some so called "expert"
