  • He smiled when the rest of the quintet went livid over not getting paid for the NAACP Scholarship gig at Carnegie Hall. Hancock and Shorter almost left the building. Tony Williams was so unlike any drummer with Miles before or after. Listen to "Eighty One."

  • uuggghhh those double stroke rolls! I saw him perform at Yoshi's in Oakland before he passed. he was sick with the flu but still burned the house down!

  • tony has more technique at 17 than most great professional drummers will ever have. goddamn! it's almost overwhelming to watch.

  • Williams had so much confidence and maturity in his playing at such a young age. Another case for reincarnation. Having all of that ability and knowledge at such an early age.

  • 17 years old and playing for the Miles Davis Quintet... guess thats okay haha

  • 0:50 BEAST

  • :50 Swing it Tony!

  • Give me that ridecymbal, sounds amazing!!!!

  • the plugged nickel box set is amazing

  • I can imagine the time required to get that left to work at that speed, the same with the right hand.

  • Almost every video on youtube with over 20,000 has at least one dislike, it amazing that these videos of miles and tony don't! Shows you how much people respect and love this stuff

  • @Bosphorus92 word life son!

  • ZERO dislikes. because this is fucking awesome.

  • @dirtpipedan The only dislike maybe would come from the ride cymbal, as Tony is beating the ever-loving shit out of it.

Then again, it probably liked the abuse...

  • Tony Williams is amazing...

  • tony puts a smile on my face :)

  • Yeah, Tony's cymbal work was unreal.

  • Massive Tony Williams/Jojo Mayer parallel!

  • @PositivelyBored man... I would do so much just to hear those two play together. I mean, play off* each other.

  • For you guys that don't have it, the album 'Miles Smiles' is only $5.94 on iTunes. GET IT.

  • Tony's touch....

    phenomenal !!!!!!!

  • what tune is this? they go into the head there at the end....

  • @unclejunglebass Well...it`s a Jimmy Heath composition called `Gingerbread Boy`. You can find it on `Miles Smiles`, also on You Tube.

  • Look at how effortless Tony makes drumming. Only 2 TRUE drum prodigies in my opinion, Tony and Buddy Rich. I mean look at when Tony takes the tempo to tearing speed, his hand is like jelly, AMAZING!!! Truly a legend. If I could ever be 1/100th of what Tony was, I would be happy!!!!

And what I would do to have that ride, so so crisp!!!

  • Tony and Ron quietly SWINGIN THEIR COLLECTIVE ASSES OFF!!!!

  • IDIOT!

  • dat's wayne and herbie mannnnn. Miles is probably somewhere in the corner listening to his band.

  • Uh, "Miles"? Where might he be? The choco hipster at 00:05 looks a little out of his element; bemused confused, wondering when the heavy bass and bass drum jungle beats come in

  • thats herbie hancock you moron

  • @MMMuller I know it's Herbie Hancock, your moron. I was just commenting on Hancock's seeming befuddlement. My question remains: where is Miles Davis in this video, you stupid cunt?

  • I think the person who put this on made a mistake. And dude Herbie is just in his element. If you look his eyes are closed, he is just groovin' to the solo man!! no need to rip on Herbie!!!!

  • Stanley Clark? This was I think the best miles band that there was, but as you said, no miles!

  • thats Wayne Shorter not Miles

  • he is really pushing the bass player on this one!

  • Can you post all of this concert, not just excerpts?

  • Amazing precision and Attack! Smooth as silk a true musician! Tony Williams was 'The Man'.He had such command of the instrument.R.I.P. T.W..

  • He just Kicks ASS

  • williams era un niño y ya se tocaba todo !!!

  • Ladies and Gentleman, Mr Ron Carter on the Contrabass!

  • It's like the joke Louie Belson tells about dying, and hearing in heaven, a tremendous Buddy RIch drum solo. "That's Buddy isn't it", asks Louie", ( but let's vary the punch line here to suit). "No, man", says St. Peter, "That's not Tony WIlliams. That's God, He just thinks He's Tony Williams."

  • no miles here

  • he had to be at least 18 by this time

  • tony williams is the man

  • Comment removed

  • is herbie playing the keys?

  • Comment removed

  • That's Wayne Shorter man!

  • his ride work alone is phenomenal, what a legend

  • the drum teacher that teaches me my school exam pieces was taught by the guy that taught tony williams how frickin awesome is that !

no wonder im so good rofl :P

    tony is actually amazing

  • Alan Dawson?

  • not sure, he's in on wednesdays i'll ask him then :D

  • alan dawson

  • Alan Dawson?

  • Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock ... true MASTERS. HAIL SECOND GREAT QUINTET!

  • may the cool be with u

  • @accurate18 Not to say that Coltrane isn't a true master....

  • tony?

    Wayne?

    Miles?

    Legit

  • I like tony. I dunno I like roy haynes more. Tony's style is dope but i feel like his playing is too , whats the word... unrelaxed. Its really tense where haynes ride shit is way loose and relaxed but still fast, ya dig?

  • Like a lot of Bebop it does sound very tense and jumpy, yes.

  • tony is a BEAST! the saxophone player is quite excellent too.

  • Wayne Shorter.

  • tony is like a robot. that ride just doesn't quit

  • By the way, the cover article for October's Downbeat Magazine features Tony Williams. It's a pretty good read if you're into him.

  • yea, it has an intresting thing about him and how the mahavishnu orchestsra got started. its a good article.

  • soooo ridiculous

  • yah tony's one of my role models too

along with billy cobham and jojo mayer

  • tony was freaking 18 when he did this......wow

  • im pretty sure he was 17, when he first joined miles he was 17 at least.

  • by the time wayne was in the band he was 18-19

  • which gig was this?

  • This is the greatest Jazz ever played on standard forms.

  • Jesus, check out that right hand moving like that.

  • Slamming!!!!!!!!

  • hes a drum god, but i dont see miles davis in the video...

  • umm miles isn't in this video. herbie hancock does come in in the last couple of seconds though

  • Isn't he only 17 here? Ridiculous.

  • awesome clip. gotta love up tempo stuff like this. totally irrelevant, but does anyone think that the bass player looks like snoop dogg?

  • hahahahahahaha he does

  • Thats Ron Carter dog

  • Kick ass footage man !

  • miles' quintets

    .

  • this is a musical indicator

  • Right on! Freakin' "Sparkplug"!

  • Man...could Tony Williams ever play the shit out of a ride cymbal. Dig?

  • Damm right

  • Ted Hawks of LA is one of THE greatest jazz drummers ever. As good as Tony, Elvin, Art or you name it. I only saw him once and I know playing and he was a KILLER. Someone tell me where is TED HAWKS? Is he living in Paris? How do we find his son Guy?

  • did tony listen to roy haynes? i think so what incredible raw talent.what you think..be friendly if You respond. bye the way tony was a BEATLE FAN.

  • I recently heard a story that when they met Tony went up and told him straight, 'man you need to practise more.' I mean, balls aside, he was really onto something right? after that Miles powered like mad into electricity and there he plays like he owns bits of heaven. You know who else was a Beatles fan? Buster Keaton. Oh yeah.

  • i read this in the Miles Davis biography. Miles tells this story :D and he really come back to practice more :D (he was a genius but still using cocaine and got drunk

  • Tony studied music with Alan Dawson since he was a child

  • Unbelievable mother fucker

  • does anyone know how old tony was in this clip? im pretty sure he was like 17 or something when he first started playing with miles...one of the best if not the best jazz drummers

  • Tony looks like a baby... Even now he is just beyond words. Totally blows me away.

  • A sign of true mastery: Herbie Hancock laying out (not playing) till his solo. It's as much what you don't play as what you do play--a lot of people don't understand that, both then and now. This is a really burning vid--110% fantastic--thanks for posting this.

  • I wanted to jump out of my seat when you sd you knew Ted's son. Where is Ted now? Ted Hawks is THE most underated jazz drummer ever in history period. I love youtube forever. I didnt know he had a son.

  • You could see Tony was already on his way to greatness. I also forgot how great Jackie was too on this. Does anyone remember how great drummer Ted Hawks from LA (via Paris)? Please someone say they remember him.

  • I met Ted's son, Guy, at Los Angeles Valley College, in one of their jazz bands. Guy was also a drummer. He told me that he was Ted's son. That was back in about 1979, I believe. Guy was a good player!

  • I knew Ted during my time in L.A. in the 80's. Saw him play many times. Great player and human being.

  • Jesus man when he goes into double time on the ride man...that finesse, control....man that's a textbook definition of a virtuoso...

  • This does it for me!

this is my be all end all in drumming :)

  • awsome colaboration between shorter and Tony

  • i think Tony was 16 with Jackie McLean on 'Destination Out', so that makes him about 17 here? 18 maybe?

  • This was with Wayne Shorter after "Miles Smiles" (1966) was recorded so he'd have to be at least 21. I'm guessing 22.

    Doug

  • tony isn't on destination out, thats roy haynes. you're thinking of 'one step beyond'

  • you're right, sorry.

  • Have just seen the vid of Isle of wight, chic correa was awsome,as was miles of course,i feel his best period.

  • the Isle of Wight vid is one of the most amazing things i've ever heard, the chemistry is so intense and Miles sensitivity to all the players, the sound overall, and Miles direction and injection of intensity, concepts and soul is unique. love that vid.

  • Tony = Amazing.

  • Is that Ron? it sounds like him, but certainly doesn't look like him. Is there anything better than watching Tony Williams at high tempos?

  • Great videos!

Let's not forget that these vids also include a young Herbie, Ron, and Wayne!

  • i can't believe how young he was. i was playing 'birdland' in the high school jazz band when i was that young. nice to see the 2nd quintet in action!

  • After watching the video I noticed it was lacking Miles. Oops.

  • For those of you who like this jazz, check "More from this user" for more.

  • I noticed Miles sat out of quite a few tunes on the second quartet albums. Have you ever read his autobiography?

  • hello my freind,i just read miles's autobiography.Very revealing,a very complex man,at times probably not a very nice person, but a genius.took no s..t from anyone!its well worth the read,as its his view on things and not some so called "expert"

  • If you liked that, you should check out "Kind of Blue" by Ashley Kahn. It completley changed the way I heard Miles.
