  • am number 90 lol , like thumps up

  • Great video! Only issue is you mention nothing of how to remove the quick connect clips from the old filter and put them on the new if you are using a WIX filter instead of an OEM. Instruction on this as part of the process would be extreamly useful.

  • Have not changed!!!!

  • @richpin06a. This sensor I have changed! Suspect??

  • @richpin06a yes scanned the computer but no codes present!! I'm at a loss what exactly is going on?

  • @sanitman1 Have you changed the engine coolant temp sensor.

  • I got a 96 saturn sc1 manual trans with 155000 miles! Car operates fine on level roads but when climbing steep hills/ramps i.e.bridges car stumbles in 4-5th gear. I changed the plugs/wires.map sensor.tps sensor.cleaned the egr valve.the only other things i have not changed is the fuel filter and coil pack..Thanks..

  • @sanitman1 Have you scanned the computer.

  • @SaturnFan67 The best way would be to remove the tank but that is quite the job.If it was me first i would try to use a siphon kit to remove it if that did not work i would try the jumping the fuel pump method.

  • I'm thinking about changing out my filter(55k miles- too soon?) I was wondering why you bothers unbolting the mount at all? Couldn't you slide it out without removing the mount?

  • @ericdisharmony Yes you can leave the mount in place if you wish.

  • Hey Rich, I`m going to change my fuel filter out. Do you recommend the Wix 33731, Napa 3731 Fuel Filter or the Chevy S10 type that you mentioned in the video. Are they all the same or is one more dependable than the other ? Thanks !!!

  • @MrRaiders6769 I do not recommend the S10 anymore but the Napa or Wix is just fine.

  • yeah, freaked me out a bit. it just all poured out so i just tried to blow through it to see what happened. Got a Gasoline head rush though, lol. I think I`m just going to switch it out anyway. It looks like it`s the original one and I`m at like 96,000 miles. so i guess it would not hurt.

  • Awesome video Rich, I took my fuel filter off just to check it out and clear gas came out of all 3 lines. However, when I emptied the filter it poured out black gas. I then was able to blow out more black a few times. I got clear air from 2 of the 3. The one line was sealed shut still. Is this normal or should I replace ? Thanks.

  • @MrRaiders6769 You got me on that one the ones i replaced i never checked it that way.Remember there is a regulator in the filter so one line should be restricted or regulated..

  • What about gen 1?

  • @GraniteBees Different filter and location.

  • How do you check a filter to find if it is clogged

  • @gpcdist The only way i know of is to remove the filter and blow through it.If it is very hard to blow air through then the filter is clogged.

  • i just took a good look at the dog bone mount and it looks great i dont know how im getting such a vibration when the car warms up it disapears but when the engine is cold it really vibrates hard ,as soon as it gets to operating temp its fine its like a vibrating hum

  • @ThebigHurtt There got to be a bad mount somewhere.

  • which one whould you buy ' napa gold ' or a 'wix' the oem is $69 and the after markets are $29.or thier is a fram for $38

  • @ThebigHurtt I would go with the napa gold (wix)

  • @ThebigHurtt thanks thats what i went with ,the napa filter.I replaced my top motor mount every thing went smooth i bought a solid mount gen 1.i also loosened the lower mount cradle and retightened it,but now im getting a vibration where before i dident at all .do you think i need to replace the dog bone mount or trans mount under air box thanks so much awesome info cant go wrong....THANK YOU !

  • I HAVE A 96 AND MY FUEL FILTER ONLY HAS ONE OUT LET ON EITHIER SIDE

  • @ThebigHurtt Yes that is correct for a 96.

  • my 1997 grand marquis cranks up but turns right back off unless i hold down on the gas but as soon as i let off the gas it cuts off.......could this be the fuel filter

  • @westwoodking19 Sounds more like a possible engine coolant temp sensor problem to me.

  • how does this compare to a1997 sl2

  • @eddie71664 The 97 is in a different location and the filter is different also.

  • Rich,

Excellent video, before I change my fuel filter, my 2000 Saturn SL2 has had a recurring problem that occurs sporadically. Sometimes when I try to start it, it cranks and fires just fine but either will not actually start or will not stay running. Changed the IAC valve, no fix. If I keep trying to crank it several times and then let it sit for 5-10 minutes it will nearly always fire right up. The car never stalls out when driving or running, problem only happens at initial startup.

  • @bplumbj sounds like ur fuel pressure regulator. hope you fix it, have a good one

  • @bplumbj Sorry i did not get back to you sooner i just got back my internet from the recent Halloween snowstorm can i still help you.

  • @richpin06a Yes please, I am still having the same problems as described above, sometimes it starts fine like there is nothing wrong and other times it turns over 1/2 way fires but dies like it has run out of gas (which it is NOT). I had autozone read the codes and it brought up the following, P031, P0042, P0507, P0404, P0122???

  • @bplumbj Did i ask you if you have changed the engine coolant temp sensor and its connector.

  • @richpin06a No sir, I haven't changed the engine coolant temp sensor.

  • Thanks so much for your quick reply. Is it possible to mix up the two gas lines at the back of the filter?

  • @thisreallysucksbig The two line that are side by side are of two different sizes so it would be very difficult to not get them in the right place.

  • I replaced the filter now I have a vibrating hum coming from either the filter or the fuel pump. When I put my hand on the fuel filter it feels like it's vibrating, could it be the pressure regulator in it is faulty?

  • @thisreallysucksbig If it was ok before replacement and now it is not then something went wrong in replacing it or the filter is defective.

  • what I don't like is that he is not actually doing it in the car but from something else pay close attention he is standing up parallel to the fuel filter.

  • @csnr355 Are you taking about the bracket i swapped on the bench.

  • OK. Thanks

  • hey Rich, I understand that reading from other peoples posts that the two bolts connecting the harness are very common to break off. What can I do if they do break on me and the post is stuck in the holes ? The other question I have is what is the normal RPM and Spark ADV (*) Supposed to be during normal idle on a Sl2 DOHC. I`m at like 1224 RPM and 22 Spark on a cold start. Later on at a red light I get like 724 - 900 RPM and 9 - 13 -19 spark. Thanks !!!!

  • @MrRaiders6769 The first one i did the bolts broke off and i drilled and taped them.Idle and spark timing seem normal to me.

  • Hey richpin i should try this method on a 1985 volvo 240 dl that fuse trick it works

on older cars answer me soon thanks?

  • @Turbodieselracer I do not see why not it should be the same as this saturn.

  • My car is setup a little bit different in the fuse box area. It's a 1999 SL w/ manual transmission. My fuel pump fuse looks like a dark gray square block about 1"x1"x1" in size. It's located just to the left of the HVAC blower fuse, which looks identical, and which is situated in the very lower right corner of the fuse box.

Thanks so much for the upload, your undercarriage is way cleaner than mine ;-)

  • Hi, a question, If I can't find the fuse to the fuel pump would disconnecting the battery be the same? I have never change a fuel filter before. Also, after you install the filter, you just replaced the fuse and you were done?

  • Hi, a question, If I can't find the fuse to the fuel pump would disconnecting the battery be the same? I have never change a fuel filter before.

  • @iluvbogs No because the reason we remove the fuse is so we can run the engine to relive the fuel pressure.

  • yes this guy can talk

  • @richpin06 i did this job already but wht are other ways to improve gas mileage on this car? i did the plugs, wires air filter, cleaned throttle body. is there something else im missing?

  • Did you crank it over so the gas would drain out the line Rich

  • @hp11208 Yes i pull the pump fuse and ran the engine till it stoped.

  • You did that a LOT faster than I can on my Jeep. It has 3 different connectors; one is a quick disconnect (I have a tool), one with a connector like the one you removed first, and a third one that I can't figure out...

Actually, after an hour under it trying to get it loose and creating new swear words (my differential could write a book), I gave up and reconnected the 2 I could get loose.

  • Rich you've worked on neons before , should you take the fuse to the fuel pump out for the 2000 dodge neon?

  • @Filmaker25 I would think the same would apply to the neon as to the saturn.

  • hey man

Thanks a lot for good video, I also need your support, since I have a saturn SW2 96 MY, well in this car the fuel filter also includes the line to the motor, have you any video to replace this fuel filter for this model of saturn, lately my car is not going well so I assume this may be the problem,, please help..

    Joe

  • @riosabu I do not at this time have a video on replacing the fuel filter on the 91-97 Saturn but if i get one that needs a filter i will be sure to video it.

  • the question is. does this video also apply to SW1 Model saturns?

  • @Camu2000 All S-series from 1998 -2002 are the same

  • i tried to replace mine on my audi, should of took 20 mins, but took 4 hours cause the pin broke inside the quick connect, i had to put a screw in there and use the teeth on the screw to hook the tip and yank it out, i noticed my engine ran 10000000 times better after change

  • @audiocable I do not find it enjoyable working on audi volkswagan any more too much crap.

  • @richpin06a lol no one likes working on them, pain in the butt

  • Is it possible to hook the fuel filter into the wrong side on the engine side of the filter where there are two fittings. I think I may have installed the plastic tabs on the wrong outlet.

  • @mjoekingz28 possible but not likely

  • i heard on another video that before i start this process i am suppose to open the gas cap on the back of the car so that fuel does not squirt out is that true?

  • @nobsaroundhere That is a good idea as there is pressure there sometimes.

  • he kinda sounds like cermit the frog

  • thank you... and also I heard one of the best ways to check if your fuel filter is going bad is to take it off and blow through it. is this the best way? and also, I just found out I have a bad air injection system fault? could it just be a leaky/busted hose? how do I find out which hose is bad?

  • @arcadipane28 The philosophy i go by is if the filter does not look new replace it.If you have a bad line you visually inspect it if is a injector that's more differcult so it is allot easier to just replace them.

  • thank you very much for the vids... also, I have to change my fuel filter, on the video you said to get a fuel filter for the s10 series or buy a filter for my car which is a saturn along with the penetrating oil you put on the bolts before removing them? is this correct just want to make sure before I start anything and not ruin it. thank you so much.

  • @arcadipane28 I do not recommend the s10 filter any more see note in video. Those bolts brake very easily a workaround is to take the filter out of the bracket while it is still on the car.

  • Why would you remove the fuse to change the filter?? And start the car without the fuse??? Ok go ahead and destroy the fuel pump.

  • Hey richpin06a just asking, you said autozone had a filter from the 2001 S10 2.2 flex fuel. You recommend that filter simply because of price and/or that improves the performance of the car?

    ....very good video btw, thanks

  • @adycars31 I do not recommend that filter anymore.

  • Thank you for the help. My girlfriends 99SL stalled out the other day. It runs perfectly fine, but then sometimes at stop lights it seems to have a rough idle. So im going to change the fuel filter and see if that helps. I hope my bolts dont snap cuz I dont know how to re-thread em. Thanks again for the help!

  • @bradleytreseler Have you ever changed the engine coolant temperature sensor and it's connector.

  • can you do this without removing the bracket? I'm worried my screws will break and i won't be able to re-attach it.

  • @glethal85 I am told you can but have not done it that way.

  • Thanks for your help .............

  • Today i put a new fuel cap on my sattie wishing that would fix my p0440 code and that was a fail. 2mro i am going to change a my fuel filter. Hopefully that cures my problem. Thank you richpin for this awesome video

  • Excelente video... bravo... ty

  • U should remove the fuel pump fuse a little slower. My eyes could barely keep up!

  • I'm changing a fuel filter on a 97 Saturn SL2 and the one I purchased is slightly different, having an accompanying hose on the "to engine" side of the filter. On this hose is a small valve that you can twist off. Is it possible to relieve the fuel pressure by simply unscrewing this valve and catching it into an oil pan, or will I still need to remove the fuse and start the engine until it dies? Thanks for the video btw, served as a reminder to pick up some anti-seize for the bolts!

  • @bobmortock yeah I have a 1997 Saturn SW2 and I have to change my fuel filter. I went to Autozone and I got a fuel filter with a bunch of hoses that come with it just what you said with the small value that twist off. So how did you do yours? Did you relieve the fuel pressure by unscrewing the value or what?

  • @houdinifan27 I have no idea what that valve is for and didn't do anything to it when unhooking my old fuel filter. I believe it was tight on my old unit so I made sure it was tight on the new filter (which it already was). I relieved the fuel pressure using the method described in this video. Worked like a charm. There will still be some gas that comes out but won't spray all over the place like a volcano.

  • also which side should i disconnect first the side closest to the engine or the side closest to the gas tank. my filter has the screw on the side of the gas tank and the clips closest to the engine.

  • when i pull the fuse how long should i let it run.

  • i have a 98 olds bravada that i am gonna change the fuel filter on. i never changed it since i had the truck and never changed one on a fuel injected vehicle before. my question is should i depressurize the system. or would just pulling the fuse do it. how would i go about changing my fuel filter

  • @cujo1975 I normally pull the fuse and start the engine

  • @richpin06a when you say start the engine, do you mean like trying to crank it over or just turning the ignition over to start? thanks!

  • @6heartbreakkid9 Crank it until it runs and dies. Sometimes it won't even start, so just turn it over a half dozen cranks to make sure it has relieved some of the pressure and you should be good to go.

  • Rich, Great post. I was just quoted by a NTB that the fuel filter in our SL1 would be a .7hr job, a 124 dollar filter and.......here goes................245.00 grand total! So looks like you just saved me 210. Good on you buddy.

  • @GraphicNinja That,s what i like to hear

  • is that ray ramano narrating?

  • @jdymes101101 Yes i have him come over from time to time.

  • I see your note about only OEM and WIX as recommended (Saturn 2002 S). OERPLACEMENT sells a filter linked to the Saturn OEM number: What do you think? BTW: Your video and instructions are extremely helpful (already have followed two others with perfect results). tnx, buyplenty

  • @buyplenty Seems to good to be true only $28.

  • @buyplenty Yup, I agree. The price on the WIX varies widely from local to on-line vendors (up to nearly $90). I will likely go with the Saturn OEM because of the pressure regulator aspect of the part; just have to suck-up the $108.

  • Thanks richpin06 for yours videos over saturn s-series

  • best video ever. needs to come up in more searches. thanks for showing the fuse removal and the quick release on the filter.

  • im having problems starting my 86 porsche 944, its really annoying. i would have to spray starting fluid. and after another few starts i would have to spray it again.. could it be air flow meter?

  • @Howtoanything Is it only hard stating ever time it is cold.

  • @richpin06a cold, hot any weather, its the same.

  • @richpin06a To tell you the truth i am not up on my L-jetronic furl injection but it sounds like it could be a engine temp sensor issue.

  • Is this filter R&R the same for a 96??

  • @ptracefreak no it is not

  • i was really hesitent to change my fuel filter only because i didnt want to get covered with gas while doing it. even though i'll be doing it on a 99 explorer and im sure it will be a tad bit more still no where near the amount i expected reading diy's with warnings. so thanks.

  • richpin, Thank you for your helpful videos. I was directed here by looking up changing the fuel pump. Do you have anything on changing the fuel pump?

  • @hmallett1 Not at this time.

  • im having problems starting my car when its warm, its a turbo diesel. Glow plugs have been checked and are fine, is there any chance it could be the fuel filter?

  • @pwadsworth87 I know next to nothing about diesels. But if it was a gas engine i would say it could be fuel flooding into the engine when it is shut off.

  • You've helped me before, and it looks like you're going to help me again! Thank you so much for posting these How To videos!!!! You have helped me immensely on more than one occasion!!

  • could the fuel filter be a resolution to a strong smell of gas, missing, or aceleration

  • @goldeelocs252 Yes!

  • Hey Rich, is the 97 SC2 fuel filter in the same place with the same number of lines?

  • No it is at the front of the car under the brake booster and has two lines not three as the 98-02 has.

  • Excellent.

  • Good Explanation, just a little concerned where all the combustable fuel ended up if not in a 'catch container'! Health and Safety first.

    Best regards

    from a gas sniffin smoker.

  • hey richpin, after doing my fuel filtrer change, my car start running with a P0172 OBD2 code witch mean fuel system running too rich and when 1 start it, it take about 10-15 rotation before the engine start up, can you help me?

  • NonOEM filters can lead to running rich and setting a code.

  • Thanks Richpin.

  • Hi Richpin. I have a '97 Saturn SL2. Filter is low near the driver side wheel well under the hood, under master cylinder. I can't remove the fuel line with the special tool (suspect tool is too long, perhaps?). Is the tool supposed to get under the clip? Then press? Do you have vidieo? Thanks.

  • You should not have to use a tool to remove the fuel filter just compress the two plastic tabs while pulling on the fuel line.

  • what about the quick disconnect tool you can find at auto parts?

  • very satisfied with this video good job dude you explain better than most of these fools

  • is this the same as on a sl1?

  • yes SOHC and DOHC are the same

  • When you're talking about the bolts breaking I have two questions:

-How do you soak a bolt with the oil you mention before removing it?

-What do you mean when you say you "re-tapped them" and put new bolts in?

  • There is an egg shaped hole near the filter you can use to oil the bolts. If they break you drill them out rethread the hole.

  • btw, how did you remember which hose went on while outlet hole on the engine side of the filter?

  • how did you start up the car w/o your foot on the clutch. I wish all cars were like yours and not nannified where if that one little switch goes out you can't even crank your ride.

  • you can actually fix that. theres a button under the clutch that gets pressed when you push in the clutch. you can cut both wires, then connect them back, with one extra wire coming off of each one (kinda like a T line) then you route the extra wires wherever you want, and install a switch of your choice on them. when you turn on the switch, the car will think the clutch is depressed, and you can start the car without pushing the clutch.

  • I wish you lived in Jacksonville, FL!

  • This vid is for a 98-02. I have a 97 SL2, How is it different? Thanks!

  • The location and filter is totally different on the 97.

  • Do you need the filter/regulator for the 98-02? Does the 35 dollar filter have it?

  • yes, no

  • Put anti-seize on the bolts!

  • he has a cool kennedy accent

  • thanks again Rich: i purchased from saturn a replacement fuel filter, came with new holder and clips. by doing it myself, saved almost $100. you make it easy with your video.

  • Why is it that you no longer recommend the different filter? Curious because i cant find a OEM for under $70 bucks, thanks.

  • The built in regulator on the aftermarket filters are running a little high on output pressure.

  • so other than higher pressure i should be fine with the other filter you suggested?

  • As always Rich, great video and thanks again.

I'm not looking forward to broken bracket bolts, that's for sure.

So I guess you recommend a Saturn OEM fuel filter?

  • I do recommend a Saturn OEM fuel filter

  • thanks for the info!, what is the difference in replacing fuel filter on a 95 SL1?

  • The 95 filter has two lines to it instead of three that the 98-02 has.

  • Very helpful video thanks. However next time explain that you have to prime the new filter before you start the car again. (Ignition on 3 times)

  • Richpin knows all about saturns, thanks for the help!

  • This video is great! It matched what I needed exactly - showing how to get the filter out of the bracket was very helpful. One thing to note - the new filter I got (Wix brand) did not come with the QD clips. I had to transfer them from the old filter, but very easy to do. Thanks for the great vid!
