ALT is the only key you're supposed to hold. You type in the number normally, as if you were to write it, then release ALT.

I have. Some laptops have a substitute for numpad marked as blue numbers over some keys in the right part of the keyboard (j,k,l or so) that work with the Fn key pressed or with Numlock on. So try that.
