@JPBill You are one of those "dumb" people that I was talking about. So thank you for proving my point. I suggest that you find a dictionary and look up the word "BRANDISHING". Then keep that dictionary and start to use it on a daily basis, that way you won't sound so stupid the next time you comment.
If you open carry you remove the element of surprise. You run the risk of being disarmed and shot with your own gun. You let a determined criminal know that you are the first person he needs to eliminate.as a threat.
Read the laws before making comments next time, because when you don,t know them it makes you look stupid. You CAN NOT open your coat or show a bad guy your gun if you are carrying concealed. That would be called "brandishing" and that is against the law. By doing that you would be placed under arrest along with the bad guy. Again please learn the laws before you speak, otherwise people will think that all of us that carry (open or concealed) are just as dumb.
@MrCA357 This is true where I live. Just telling someone you are carrying when you are not justified in using your weapon will earn you a charge of Brandishing.
JPBill2 has challenged your assertion in a cowardly way but he is wrong. Reveal in my state and you had better be justified to shoot. Otherwise, get yourself a good lawyer.
Also creates unease in other non-carrying civilians around you. Again, bad tactics. Open carry is about making a statement, not maintaining advantages.
@tubevideoguy762 well I get the problems with it but I just think that conceal and carry is more reactive and open proactive. I don't really condone the use of guns for defense but even a liberal hippy like me gets that when you have a S&W 500 or an m1911 straped to your side criminals give you a second look. It's the part where you blow someones face off that' I don't like (both morally and because of the inevitable legal trouble), wich seems to me to be more the point of conceal and carry.
some people may notice the weapon but these assholes who say responsible people carrying guns in a comfortable way (most of which will say open carry is far less bothersome) are somehow threatening the general public. they're idiots average gun owners aren't the threat criminal gang members are.
@tubevideoguy762 ...that's kinda my point. If you have an intimidating looking .45acp or something strapped to your side people tend not to fuck with you. if you have a crappy little mouse gun in your shirt then it isn't doing anything until you pull it out AFTER an incident happens. I don't know about you but if I'm robbing a store I want an easy store to rob, and a guy with a gun strapped on his side doesn't condone an easy robbery...
Very true I think we have similar beliefs on the matter because for many years now I've carried in the open about 85% and carried concealed the other 15% and a total of 3 times I've been harassed once by an elderly couple again by an off duty leo and third by a man sitting next to me in a movie theater all three of these were over a year apart proving how few people notice a holstered weapon even in plain view.
Completely agree with you. Element of surprise is only an advantage with concealed carry if you aren't the target. Some will say that open carry makes you a target. While there is no evidence of this, there is plenty of evidence that shows displaying a firearm can prevent a crime from happening. In fact, criminals are less likely to target someone they KNOW is armed.

Revealing a gun is not brandishing. Drawing and pointing a gun is brandishing, Mr CA357.

I'm not sure what exactly your point is Mr Lindsay, nor what question you are asking for a retort.

Concealed carry = reactive.
Open carry = proactive and reactive.
