Hi mate, I'v basically had the same problem as you mines a 60GB (it was one of the top 500 made) never updated or anything and my brother turned it on in the morning played it for 20 mins before it went off. The fan test doesn't work aswell so disc still in there. What do I need to do to get it working or isn't it going to work again??

I've had my ps3 for about 7 years and it's the first time it did this. Two years ago I bought the new one but that one is at my dads house. So now I'm suck with out playing modern warfare 3.
@MEOWCI, the symptoms you now have are just like detecting cancer early. True, you now know your PS3 has it, and it's only a matter of time before it gives up the ghost. Best of luck!
I played BF3 and arkham city for like 5 hours straight and there's no auto shutdown or whatsoever. Even my ps3 fan is loud like hell while playing BF3 but still no auto shutdown. Is this really YLOD? my friend encountered this before and he said he left his ps3 off for 1 day and the next day he on, it's working fine till now. he encountered it months ago
I encounted this days ago but it only happened when I loaded Ratchet and clank all 4 one. It auto shutdown once it loaded the checkpoint in like1 sec. It doesnt happen to other of my games. I can even access the XMB. Also like what shown i this vid, once it auto shutdown with red light flashing, I'm forced to turn it off from behind. I turned it on again and it my ps3 was ok till now.
@thistownfails Simple man they just make them cheep for the cash.Notice how they didn't change the warranty because of these problems.When XBox found out they had a malfunction with overheating they extended the warranty on that note.But I'm just a Nintendo fan at heart lol and none of there stuff go's defalt.
Mine just turned yellow yesterday, I'm puzzled because of the videos of i've seen of the yellow light, my problem with the yellow light is unique. From what i've seen, once the light is yellow it turn red and stays off. Press the button again and it turns yellow and off again. But for me not only did my ps3 light turned yellow, red and off; I'm pressing the button again and it began working like normal the light is normal. What just happend, I'm too afraid to continue using the console.
@lawrence4566 While your symptoms may seem unique, they are just a sign that it will eventually fail. Mine did this at least 4 times (died, revived, died, revived, then... died for good). Sort of like this, your PS3 has cancer and will die if you dont fix it soon. Pretty simple to do actually.
@MUSICSxSHADOWx24x7 that's just a temporary fix. Many say that technique only adds 3 more months of life, usually people use that technique to sell their PS3 to gamestop.
Yep get yourself a cheap heat gun and a tube of thermal greese a few screw drivers and a small Allen key and watch a ylod fix on YouTube your have it fixed in an hour...!
@xXDaPimpedOutSnipaXx This doesnt only happen to people who play 24/7. I play about 3 hours A WEEK and this morning I played for the first time in two weeks. I was playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 for 5 minutes and then the screen froze, went black and I got the red flashing light.
@514Productions Dude no offense but xbox 360 has the same problem and yes im talking about the slim. If he is a sony fan get a ps3 slim xbox 360 has its on set of problems.
@XiaoFury I know you are looking on how to fix your ps3 entirely but just thought i would say, to get the disk out u need to do the fan check thing and it comes out. thats what worked for me:)
@XiaoFury make sure it is turned off from the back of the console, then hold your finger on the eject button and flick the switch at the back to turn it on. i know u probably watched that in the video but just to clarify. other than that i can't help you sorry:/
Its and easy fix. just move the ps3 to a different place, the problem is heat, either the ps3 has been thee for too long, or its in a hotspot. your tv is probably the hotspot. also, after ypi move it buy at least two external fans, and dont play for up to three days. if your ps3 still is like that, then send it in, or but a new one
@TripleJDoubleUPaul You could be correct depending on where people place their PS3. if they stuff it in a corner blocking the vents then your solution *should* work. However, if it's one of the 4% that fail because the hardware fails you wont get much love.
My PS3 just got this problem last night. Except I had a disc in my PS3 and it won't come out, nor can I do a fan test like you show. However when I press either the power button or eject button it goes to green for a second, then yellow, then red it beeps 3 times then blinks red. Does anyone know how to fix this or get my disc out? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

@locojacket I pressed the link, but nothing happened except said "virus detected in link". I also tried the holding the eject button and on button and resetting the back to try to get the disk out. I tried taking the hard drive out and did what others were saying about turning it back on and putting it back in that didn't work. I vacuumed it as many claim its from "over heating" so I made sure theres no dust and let it sit a long while. Called Sony and they were no help.
@125SonGoku Yeah, I know how Sony can be. That's partially why I made this video. About the link though, I'm not sure why you would be getting that error. I've tried it at my work computer today and on my home computer and both work just fine. Maybe try it on a friend's computer?
You're right about it overheating. However, once it's overheated enough it's pretty much done w/o a guide on how to fix it yourself. Sort of like gum, once you've chewed it you cant flatten it the same as new again.
All Sony said they could do is have me send it to them, so they can give me a fixed one, and my music, pictures, game data, etc. would be deleted. (Pretty much said I was screwed) so I don't feel like paying 150ish to get my data erased, I'd prefer to fix it. Wish they could fix it since they fix them and make em. I tried clicking on the link in your video and description, it didn't work for me. Disk won't come out either, nor do the fans kick on strong, it starts up normal, then dies.
@125SonGoku You can also keep your hard drive (as you've proven it's not that). That way when you fix it, they fix it, or you buy a new one you can just swap it back in and start playing like nothing happened. Be aware though, that Sony can and probably will take 3 weeks to get it back to you AFTER they receive it, does not count the time it takes for you to send it to them!
@locojacket I wish I could do that, as I'd send the system in but keep the hard drive. However Sony said that if I put my hard drive into any other PS3 it will try to reformat itself and I will lose my data and I really don't want that. So you think its a problem with the PS3 not the Hard Drive because I can take the hard drive out, try turning on the PS3, and the PS3 still goes from Green, Yellow, then Blinking Red without the Hard Drive in it?
@125SonGoku There is a chance that it will ask to reformat it. You *should* be offered the option to NOT format it though. If that's the case I would try hooking it up to a computer and saving the "PS3" folder (as that's your gamesaves and whatnot) to a flash drive.
If you take out the hard drive and turn the PS3 on, it should tell you "there's no hard drive in here!" with text on the screen. If it has the same symptoms with or without the hard drive, it's a hardware failure inside the system.
@locojacket Yeah, it doesn't tell me theres no hard drive in there. It just goes Green, Yellow, Red and Blinks Red. So I guess then thats a hardware failure inside the system? So you said that my PS3 hard drive can be put onto my computer? It won't ask me to format it and delete all my data? I just really want my music, pictures, PS3&PS2 data so I'm trying to find a way to fix it or get the data off. Nothings worked on it so far, and the fan test doesn't work.
@125SonGoku Right then, I've never tried attaching it to my PC before. From what I read on the web you're not going to be able to recover your files. Best bet, would be to give the link in the description a try. That will try to fix your PS3 so you wont have to worry about recovering files.
@locojacket Also, I'm curious as your video shows the EXACT symptoms that mine has, the Green, then Yellow, then blinking Red. Did you ever get your PS3 fixed? And if so, how/where? I see you added a link, but you mentioned it came out after you repaired yours? Does your now work, and if so, where/how did you originally get it fixed? I appreciate the help with this!
@locojacket I tried contacting the people in the link, tho they said they only repair the Yellow Light of Death, not the Red Blinking Light of Death, which is what mine has as it goes Green, Yellow, then Blinks Red.

@peeeons : i told you what i did, I bought a new slim one.I had a long chat with a friend of mine ,who knows a lot about game consoles, and he told me that for 120-150 dollars to fix it, and get my saves back, The problem is that, at 120-150, I will have a working system 1-2 years. The problem is that, it can break due to anything else in that time, which means! the risk of paying again to fix it. And for 150 ! it is half of a new one! so I just decided to get a new one, even if i lost my save
@peeeons : con: so basically! you can get it fix at a 3rd party and well... have a dead ps3 in 1-2 years for another issues ( laser could break, other chips can break as well) and you can call sony as well. BUT 150 for a refurbished system! is also a bad move. So the best thing to do, in my opinion, is to just get a new ps3 and well... start over again, if you didn't back up your saves, or if you did! you are at a good spot then.

@MystryMew : that just happened to me today, when i was playing Red dead... >< last night i was playing SVR 2011, and nothing!! and then! i remembered that my gf wanted me to play Red dead, to start playing undead redemption (which she got for me for xmas) and well.. now! my ps3 is well...dead. @rgchrono Shame isnt it, but i hear the part that covers the (power supply "i think") is made out of plastic in the fat ps3 so when playing for long periods of time its possible it could melt on it. But hey what do i know O_o
@MystryMew : i was thinking that as well, the power supply burning, one way to see if an electronic burned out is by smell , always works. And well, my ps3 does not smell like it burned out. Also! my ps3 still loads a little, you can see the loading image and it slows down, and then it just dies and gives the yellow light and then the 3 beeps and red light and it stays like that. The same thing that is going on in the video, is the same thing that happens mine, but i do see a few seconds of ps3
You have saved too many games and loaded on alot more, then it will crash and do this because of a virus or infection which make it impossible to start.
Otherwise you havent cleaned it on the inside for a long time, and it's core and other things are so dusty they wont turn on until you cleaned it, because of risks of fire inside.
Just got the YLOD today. Great, just great. Had the PS3 for 5 years and it's now messing up. Black Ops is in the damn thing, and I can't get it out and now I'm going to have to get a new Black Ops game ($60.00) and also get the fucking PS3 fixed. I'm so fucking pissed right now.

1). dont turn off ur ps3 from the back on the older consoles... it DESTROYS the harddrive. (you can hold down the ps button on the controller and shut it off or the power button on the ps3).
i have the the overheating problem and have done everything even reset the ps3 itself and nothing works. i had taken back to sony to fix my YLOD problem and it came back working fine until last night when i was playing blackops online and it froze all it does now is turn on blink green and then beep and keep flashing red pls respond and help
@MegaBurger2010 Wow dude, that really really sucks! I am irritated that Sony sent you back what would appear to be a malfunctioning equipment. Two things:
1. If it's recently been returned to you, call them and tell them they obviously didnt fix it the first time.
2. If it's way past when you got it back, try the link in the description. It's $30 and if you've got basic skills you should be able to fix your PS3 yourself.
Few things: FIRST you may want to re-Place your system. You may be blocking some vents in the back? SECOND It prolbly overheated or the circuits or motherboard fried OR some other reason idk about. THIRD I recomend you getting a slim (Newer modle of PS3) because it gives off less heat. Sadly it has TWO usb ports insted of FOUR. Looks worse. Is the ONLY one you can REALLY find now. And Worst of ALL doesnt play ps2 games. So think about u next choice
@AngeloCordisco True. There was a chance that the vents were blocked. But it's not likely as the vents are on the right/back sides of it.
Your second note is also very true. This happens a lot because the GPU becomes unsoldered from the mobo. I would love to get a slim, but seeing as how I have a new one and it works perfectly I'm fine with what I have. I'm also going to be looking into getting a 360 in the near future. Not because I'm not happy with my PS3 though. Oh, and nothing plays PS2
I took it all apart re flux the chips which was very easy put new thermal compound on the CPU and gpu which are big squire chips on mine connect to the fan . On the motherboard it looks very hard but very easy I did it my first time it's like brand new now . And total paid 15.00 for everything

My 60g broke and a disc is stuck in it. Of course, the fan trick doesn't work with 60 gigs and mine wasn't made with screws. Anyone know a way to get the disc out besides bringing it in or smashing it to pieces?
@stasf6 If you dont have screws, I would recommend a hammer. (j/k) Every console these days has screws. They're just cleverly hidden to prevent average people from opening their products.

im went dead today and a couple of weeks earlier it happend to my friend and be took it to some random repair shop and it was fixed over night and they said that the problem was that a wire melted so yeah
Ours went down in 2009. Nothing helped. I sent it in to Sony and they fixed it but it went down again the other night. We now have a new one but all our game data is still on the old drive some I'm scratching my head over what to do about that part...
I have spent some time diagnosing this, and have concluded that it is a fault in the power supply and cannot be fixed without replacing the power supply.......
if the cd is stuck inside the ps3 then just do the fan test and while its on just tap the eject button and it'll come out. Fix the ps3, just let the ps3 cooldown for a few hours. Place it upright (if u know wat i mean) and do the fan test. The fan test blows out dust from the ps3. Just chill dont spend money. spend time...
@chrisgaj2 i got this problem. I switch the power off on the back. hold the eject button, put the power on, it starts up but no fan test and then it shuts down.
Mine does this. it will stay on for about a minute, then it will start skipping, going slower and slower until it finally freezes, then like 10 seconds later gets the yellow light. any tips to fix this

I fixed mine by blow drying it then putting tin foil on the pads instead of heatsink compound and it worked,so far so good.

Its and easy fix. just move the ps3 to a different place, the problem is heat, either the ps3 has been thee for too long, or its in a hotspot. your tv is probably the hotspot. also, after ypi move it buy at least two external fans, and dont play for up to three days. if your ps3 still is like that, then send it in, or but a new one

@TripleJDoubleUPaul You could be correct depending on where people place their PS3. if they stuff it in a corner blocking the vents then your solution *should* work. However, if it's one of the 4% that fail because the hardware fails you wont get much love.

My PS3 just got this problem last night. Except I had a disc in my PS3 and it won't come out, nor can I do a fan test like you show. However when I press either the power button or eject button it goes to green for a second, then yellow, then red it beeps 3 times then blinks red. Does anyone know how to fix this or get my disc out? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

@locojacket I pressed the link, but nothing happened except said "virus detected in link". I also tried the holding the eject button and on button and resetting the back to try to get the disk out. I tried taking the hard drive out and did what others were saying about turning it back on and putting it back in that didn't work. I vacuumed it as many claim its from "over heating" so I made sure theres no dust and let it sit a long while. Called Sony and they were no help.

@125SonGoku Yeah, I know how Sony can be. That's partially why I made this video. About the link though, I'm not sure why you would be getting that error. I've tried it at my work computer today and on my home computer and both work just fine. Maybe try it on a friend's computer?
You're right about it overheating. However, once it's overheated enough it's pretty much done w/o a guide on how to fix it yourself. Sort of like gum, once you've chewed it you cant flatten it the same as new again.

All Sony said they could do is have me send it to them, so they can give me a fixed one, and my music, pictures, game data, etc. would be deleted. (Pretty much said I was screwed) so I don't feel like paying 150ish to get my data erased, I'd prefer to fix it. Wish they could fix it since they fix them and make em. I tried clicking on the link in your video and description, it didn't work for me. Disk won't come out either, nor do the fans kick on strong, it starts up normal, then dies.

@125SonGoku You can also keep your hard drive (as you've proven it's not that). That way when you fix it, they fix it, or you buy a new one you can just swap it back in and start playing like nothing happened. Be aware though, that Sony can and probably will take 3 weeks to get it back to you AFTER they receive it, does not count the time it takes for you to send it to them!

@locojacket I wish I could do that, as I'd send the system in but keep the hard drive. However Sony said that if I put my hard drive into any other PS3 it will try to reformat itself and I will lose my data and I really don't want that. So you think its a problem with the PS3 not the Hard Drive because I can take the hard drive out, try turning on the PS3, and the PS3 still goes from Green, Yellow, then Blinking Red without the Hard Drive in it?

@125SonGoku There is a chance that it will ask to reformat it. You *should* be offered the option to NOT format it though. If that's the case I would try hooking it up to a computer and saving the "PS3" folder (as that's your gamesaves and whatnot) to a flash drive.
If you take out the hard drive and turn the PS3 on, it should tell you "there's no hard drive in here!" with text on the screen. If it has the same symptoms with or without the hard drive, it's a hardware failure inside the system.

@locojacket Yeah, it doesn't tell me theres no hard drive in there. It just goes Green, Yellow, Red and Blinks Red. So I guess then thats a hardware failure inside the system? So you said that my PS3 hard drive can be put onto my computer? It won't ask me to format it and delete all my data? I just really want my music, pictures, PS3&PS2 data so I'm trying to find a way to fix it or get the data off. Nothings worked on it so far, and the fan test doesn't work.

@125SonGoku Right then, I've never tried attaching it to my PC before. From what I read on the web you're not going to be able to recover your files. Best bet, would be to give the link in the description a try. That will try to fix your PS3 so you wont have to worry about recovering files.

@locojacket I tried contacting the people in the link, tho they said they only repair the Yellow Light of Death, not the Red Blinking Light of Death, which is what mine has as it goes Green, Yellow, then Blinks Red.

@peeeons : i told you what i did, I bought a new slim one.I had a long chat with a friend of mine ,who knows a lot about game consoles, and he told me that for 120-150 dollars to fix it, and get my saves back, The problem is that, at 120-150, I will have a working system 1-2 years. The problem is that, it can break due to anything else in that time, which means! the risk of paying again to fix it. And for 150 ! it is half of a new one! so I just decided to get a new one, even if i lost my save

@peeeons : con: so basically! you can get it fix at a 3rd party and well... have a dead ps3 in 1-2 years for another issues ( laser could break, other chips can break as well) and you can call sony as well. BUT 150 for a refurbished system! is also a bad move. So the best thing to do, in my opinion, is to just get a new ps3 and well... start over again, if you didn't back up your saves, or if you did! you are at a good spot then.

BTW! my system is a 60gb January 2007. And it looks like most YLOD! are taking place 4 years after buying it, looking at all of these comments.

@rgchrono Shame isnt it, but i hear the part that covers the (power supply "i think") is made out of plastic in the fat ps3 so when playing for long periods of time its possible it could melt on it. But hey what do i know O_o

@MystryMew : i was thinking that as well, the power supply burning, one way to see if an electronic burned out is by smell , always works. And well, my ps3 does not smell like it burned out. Also! my ps3 still loads a little, you can see the loading image and it slows down, and then it just dies and gives the yellow light and then the 3 beeps and red light and it stays like that. The same thing that is going on in the video, is the same thing that happens mine, but i do see a few seconds of ps3

You have saved too many games and loaded on alot more, then it will crash and do this because of a virus or infection which make it impossible to start.
Otherwise you havent cleaned it on the inside for a long time, and it's core and other things are so dusty they wont turn on until you cleaned it, because of risks of fire inside.

1). dont turn off ur ps3 from the back on the older consoles... it DESTROYS the harddrive. (you can hold down the ps button on the controller and shut it off or the power button on the ps3).
2). go buy a new harddrive :D

i have the the overheating problem and have done everything even reset the ps3 itself and nothing works. i had taken back to sony to fix my YLOD problem and it came back working fine until last night when i was playing blackops online and it froze all it does now is turn on blink green and then beep and keep flashing red pls respond and help

@MegaBurger2010 Wow dude, that really really sucks! I am irritated that Sony sent you back what would appear to be a malfunctioning equipment. Two things:
1. If it's recently been returned to you, call them and tell them they obviously didnt fix it the first time.
2. If it's way past when you got it back, try the link in the description. It's $30 and if you've got basic skills you should be able to fix your PS3 yourself.

Few things: FIRST you may want to re-Place your system. You may be blocking some vents in the back? SECOND It prolbly overheated or the circuits or motherboard fried OR some other reason idk about. THIRD I recomend you getting a slim (Newer modle of PS3) because it gives off less heat. Sadly it has TWO usb ports insted of FOUR. Looks worse. Is the ONLY one you can REALLY find now. And Worst of ALL doesnt play ps2 games. So think about u next choice

@AngeloCordisco True. There was a chance that the vents were blocked. But it's not likely as the vents are on the right/back sides of it.
Your second note is also very true. This happens a lot because the GPU becomes unsoldered from the mobo. I would love to get a slim, but seeing as how I have a new one and it works perfectly I'm fine with what I have. I'm also going to be looking into getting a 360 in the near future. Not because I'm not happy with my PS3 though. Oh, and nothing plays PS2

My 80 gig did the same thing
I took it all apart re flux the chips which was very easy put new thermal compound on the CPU and gpu which are big squire chips on mine connect to the fan . On the motherboard it looks very hard but very easy I did it my first time it's like brand new now . And total paid 15.00 for everything

My 60g broke and a disc is stuck in it. Of course, the fan trick doesn't work with 60 gigs and mine wasn't made with screws. Anyone know a way to get the disc out besides bringing it in or smashing it to pieces?

Ours went down in 2009. Nothing helped. I sent it in to Sony and they fixed it but it went down again the other night. We now have a new one but all our game data is still on the old drive some I'm scratching my head over what to do about that part...

if the cd is stuck inside the ps3 then just do the fan test and while its on just tap the eject button and it'll come out. Fix the ps3, just let the ps3 cooldown for a few hours. Place it upright (if u know wat i mean) and do the fan test. The fan test blows out dust from the ps3. Just chill dont spend money. spend time...
