Ron Hextall and Bernie Parent... 'Wish Ron had been on a cup winning team with the Flyers... He certainly deserved at LEAST one... 'Great to hear a CLASSIC Billy Joel track for the video, too. GO FLYERS!!!
@goheen1701 actually, when this video was created in 1987 the song was much more current than "classic".
Totally agree with what you said about Hexy deserving a cup. He did so much more than Fuhr did in '87 but Fuhr is the one who wound up with the cup that year. Guess that is the way it goes in sports sometimes. Thanks for the comment!
@DaveTV2 To say that he did so much more than Fuhr is ridiculous. He was awesome and that's why he won the Conn Smythe but you play for the Cup not the playoff MVP. Fuhr made the saves neccesary to win Lord Stanleys mug. Fuhr and the Oilers beat Hextall and the Flyers. Having said that...Hextall was an assasin in there, just loved his style. Underrated in my opinion.
@Lonewolfff36 How so? I am not trying to discredit Fuhr. I love the guy (especially his glove hand) he was awesome. He certainly did what was expected of him and won. That does not change the fact that IN the win he did not have to do NEARLY as much as Hextall did in the loss. Think of it this way. If 2 goalies both face 30 shots in a game with a final of 4-3. Of those 30 shots Goalie A faces only 3 scoring chances and wins. Goalie B faces 20 tough scoring chances and loses. Who did more? B!
@DaveTV2 Wow Dave,r u related 2 Ronny? As a goaltender the only thing that matters is wins. That's it & that's all.Let's say myself & my backup play two games each,I get a 2-1 win in games where I face 20 & 30 shots. My backup takes two 2-1 losses in 25 & 35 shot games...your arguement would suggest that he is doing more in those losses than I am in the wins? I cant agree with that. It's not about doing more, it's about doing what's needed. Fuhr did what was needed for the wins. Hextall did'nt.
@Lonewolfff36 Can't say that I am. I just look at things realistically. Never said anything about what "matters" more. Sure winning matters more and the Cup matters more than the MVP. That says nothing to who DID more. To your point. If of those 25 & 35 shots, there were numerous odd man rushes and breakaways leading to say 15 to 20 scoring chances and you faced, say 2, then yes, he did more in those losses having faced more. Problem with your analogy is that you are both on the same team.
@Lonewolfff36 One more way to look at it is this. Hextall faced a team which was WELL rested and healthy with SIX future hall of famers on it. In my opinion they were the best team ever. The Oilers faced a tired and injury filled Flyer team who was without their top goal scorer and with 0 future Hall of famers. They were overwhelmed for most of the series. Just watch my series of Final videos. I did not leave out decent save for either goalie & it is CLEAR that Hextall faced more and did more.
@DaveTV2 Clearly youre standing by your guy and me by mine. That's cool, it's nice having a civil disagreement on youtube rather than some racial rant, Bieber bashing lady Gaga loving nonsense that has nothing to do with the video on the page. We can agree to disagree on this one.
@Lonewolfff36 I am not just blindly "standing by my guy". It is an absolute fact that Hextall faced a HELL of a lot more scoring chances, breakaways and odd man rushes that Fuhr. There were a number of times where the Flyers would go 15 min without as much as a single shot while Hextall was dealing with the greatest offense in NHL history coming at him in waves. If Fuhr had done anywhere NEAR as much as Hextall he would have won the MVP no? After all they would have done the same & Fuhr won.
Exactly! Goalies need to guard the crease like it's a 22 yr old virgin in Detroit! All these asses skating into goalies and hurting them is B.S. You knew better than to come into Hexy's crease. Roy was another one that was not afraid to come at you if you screwed around in front. I am a die hard Wings fan, but Ron was one in million!
hexy COULD handle pressure! he just boiled over when people entered his territory and who can blame him, he did what most goalies never did. defended his fucking crease!!! Your the man Hextall
It isn't gay..the music is better than any of the shit churned out today by major labels. You don't see this kind of aggression in the modern Bettman version of the NHL. Unfortunately, I wasn't born early enough to see it.
It may be "gay" by 2008 standards but is it "gay" in the context of when the video was produced? Given that the song made it to #20 on the Billboard hot 100 chart in 1982 I would have to say no. It was certainly not a new song by when the video was made in 1987 but it was still a very popular song of the decade and certainly appropriate for the subject matter of Goaltending. There are not many greater "pressure" positions in all of sports!
He wasnt a great goalie... he was a great HOCKEYPLAYER who happened to play goal. He redefined the position and when you have Gretzky and Lemieux both saying that in a money game, they would rather face any other goalie ever, you know you are the best. He belongs in the hall of fame.

Hextall was the man when he first appeared on the scene in the late 80's. I remember him stopping the 'Great one' on more than one occasion.
