Damn why can't raven software make another hexen or heretic game?.

Im making some hexen sequels to neverwinter nights 1 but nwn 1 doesn't have roofs in the interiors cells.

This version is absolutely HORRIBLE. Hexen is one of my all time favourite games but this port is a piece of shit and I cannot believe the developers actually bothered to release this as a finished product.

At least they translated the music well though but apart from that it's a disgrace.

i love the colors in this version, the n64 version looks so bland. Otherwise i think the n64 version plays better...

The PC version and the Consol version each had their own pros and cons. Its not fair to say whether one is better than the other.

Unfortunately no. Hexen is the only game in the series to be ported to any console.

this version sucks. the pc version didint have this gay ass voice acting and intro, and the world isint called hexen, its called cronus

Actually, it DID have the intro and cd audio. There was two versions, the more common diskette version, and the cd-rom version, which has the movies and music.

Both this and the Sega Saturn version cut out all the non-frontal sprite animations of the enemies. I still don't get why, it's not like there was a lack of storage space in the media or something (in fact, the N64 version retains all of them).

I believe the Saturn version has the 3d side and back but not the PS1

Actually the Saturn version also has 1-sided enemies. The Saturn version, however, has different music and faster scripting. But the PSX has better controls. :P

Overall the Saturn version of Hexen is better than the PSX version IMHO. Though the N64 version beats them both.

@AussieHuddo No, the Sega Saturn version doesn't have them either. I know because I own it. Both the Sega Saturn and PlayStation versions were developed by Probe and they did that absurd limitation with both, although they developed the Sega Saturn version a little better than the PlayStation version, which is the worst of the lot.

I got this game yesterday for $10 used, but it's basically brand new. Though I must say I bought it so it can hold me over until my copy of Doom arrives in the mail, hopefully I won't have to wait that long. I started playing this at 4am EST time last night and couldn't figure out how to get through the first "room," then I tried again today, all I had to do was press the triangle button in front of those main doors in that hexagon or octagonal shaped room, wow I'm an idiot, but I was tired...

This game is awesome. Not as good as DOOM, Blood, or Duke 3D, but still a great game.

Exhumed (Powerslave) is good too.

I bought both the N64 and PSX versions at a pawn shop/second hand store, and the Saturn version on EBay. Either way, I don't think any of them are rare.

how do you like the saturn version? i just bought mine, and i liked that it doesn't have those nasty saw-tooths in it's texture mapping, and has rotating automap. sadly, the frame rate is worse... but i expected that.

They just fixed a lot of problems with the PSX version. The underpowered warrior class and the very slow scripting. I'm sure there's other stuff, but it's been a while since I played the two, but that's the two big ones.

I thought I could name the heroes myself after finding out even on gamefaqs they didn't have names. Looks like this video beat me to it.

My ideal names for the three classes were

Fighter: Horugun

Cleric: Dregonex

Mage: Zaxiel

you know, i'm an old school fan of hexen... played the game to death on the PC back in 1995 and i bought the 64 version so me and my friends could play the 4 way split screen together.. but in neither version do i remember this beginning movie. was this added as a bonus for the PSX version?

The PC version had two versions, a diskette version (which you probably played) and a cd version. The cd version had the movies and redbook audio. So the movies and music on the PSX version are from the PC cd version.

The odd thing is, the Saturn version has DIFFERENT music, but still sounding very Redbook. Don't know where that music came from. I'll post some vids someday.

That's because, if I remember well, the Saturn had a better sound chip than the PSX (while the latter had a better graphic chip). So, maybe it wasn't redbook.

Never heard of a CD version of Hexen on PC before. Wonder if there are some place where you can buy it (would be great if they sold this version on Steam).

Yes, it does. So does the PSX and PC CD versions. The Saturn has different redbook audio than the other two though. :)

Hexen is an excellent game. The first game I know of with hub structure and true puzzle elements. The thing is, of all the ports, the PSX version is the worst. The Saturn version is faster, and the N64 version is perfect. The PC version is awesome too.

Hexen II takes care of the last serpent rider. And Heretic II is a completely new story. So there's 4 games, 3 riders.

There's Heretic for PC (and it's "Ultimate" version, Shadow of the Serpent Riders, with two extra episodes), Hexen (for PC, N64, PSX and Saturn), Hexen: Death Knights of the Dark Citadel (expansion) for the PC), Hexen 2 for the PC, and Heretic 2 for the PC.

I'm pretty sure I covered them all. Not sure which ones were ported to Mac though.

Hehehe... I know that Heretic II is after the Serpent Riders. I have the game, excellent game it is. All the Heretic/Hexen games are.

Nope, the monsters are 8 sided on the PC. And yeah, the scripting makes this version painful.

The funny thing is, on the Saturn, the scripting is nice and fast. Other oddities on the PSX like the fighter being less powerful aren't on the Saturn either.

So I guess the hierarchy of console ports of Hexen is N64 is the best, Saturn in the middle, and PSX last. I'll be doing reviews and more videos soon. My thumb has stitches in it currently, so it'll have to wait. :P

I remember that they took up 15 blocks of memory in the psx's memory card... thats like the entire card itself for one save..

Diablo and Descent can take up almost an entire memory card as well. And both are excellent games.

WOW, not many people have diablo for ps! do you actually like it? it seems like not many people do because "the controls are hard" (which i disagree with) i love it though.

Ah yes these, I got all the FMVs up a long time ago since nobody else wanted to. Good game but I prefer the PC or N64 version of the game.
