I guess it all depends on what you like, great player with horrendous software, need to find many converters etc.(sony) or a not so good player with games for some and with great software, no software headaches(Apple). I got a walkman :) and it took over a month to find a good converter :(.

Still got my Sony A808. The sound quality STILL trounces any iPod out now, even with included buds (and even better with my v-moda's).
My A808 uses SonicStage (v4.3 is OK) to transfer music, but I need it as my ATRAC3plus files (192 and 256 kbps) sound stellar and plays those albums and mixes GAPLESS (MP3s play nearly gapless too). Also has on-the-go playlists, ratings and can delete music on the player.
A818 has identical hardware but loses Sonicstage, ATRAC, gapless etc but is drag and drop.
I think it´s a matter of taste. They are both good players. I got the Sony A816 last year because of the superior sound quality, the 32 hour playback time, great equalizer and the hi-end earphones.
On the flipside; the iPod has a few more cool gadgets. Especially the 4g. But for me it´s all about the sound quality. So thumbs up for the Sony (and also Samsung) media players

Obviously, I am a nano 3g owner. But I've also seen the sony in action from up-close. The one and only thing sony has going for it is sound quality. NOTHING ELSE.
Now, ipod comes with the crappiest earphones ever. But I've replaced them with Creative's In-Ear EP-630. Dude the combination is great, the sound quality makes me love my favorite songs all over again.

Both are great gadgets. I went for Sony for sound quality. I've one for a year now and I'm very pleased with it. Really good sound from included earbuds, great battery life. Lousy software though (well, iTunes it not stellar either), not a problem for newer ones.

Ok ipods are NOT MP3 players, they are NOT drag and drop capable, and they are useless without thier crappy itunes software. I love them both! those new nano's are very nice lookking however the sound quality is below average and downloading extra software on a slow computer is no fun at all. The Sony is very versatile in my opinion (drag n drop or windows media player 11) and has great sound quality (everyones saying it!) Both their screens are of the same size and both players are of similar quality. It's looks vs. performance.
If one takes into consideration that the Nano is such a beauty to hold & look at when turned off and EVEN MORE impressive when turned on with all its effects (such as cover flow) then the Sony looks very old dated. iPod Nano delivers excellent video quality and I think with a greater resolution than sony.

The higher the bitrate (kbps - Kilobits per second), the better the quality. I'd say that, according to the size of the screen (of either the sony or the nano), a bitrate of 384 would be sufficient. Now if you want to watch the video on your computer (bigger screen), I'd go for the 700kbps video. Just so you know, most videos in divx or xvid format are usually encoded with a bitrate between 800kpbs and 1000kpbs.

the Sony is almost as good looking as the iPod any way the whole point of Mp3 players is to have portable music/media and i would always go with Sony as the all round picture/audio quality is a lot better than the nano i have both and in my view sony is best
I looked at both at the stores today, I like the sony better (i used to own a 20gig ipod btw) but i'll have to go with the gay looking nano because the clickwheel is so much easier to work with, especially when browsing through hundreds of songs. I can't imagine browing through songs pressing the up and down button everytime..
ipod is brighter, sony is somewhat dark, same screen size, no click wheel, doesn't hold as many songs as the ipod nano. ipod nano wins. anything that Apple makes is always better in my view.
Adjust the settings for brigtness. Doesn't hold the same number of songs? Both players have an 8GB version, which will hold the same number of songs...are you using some other form of math? In the end, the sound quality is the main point and the Sony has MUCH better sound quality and a user-defined EQ as well.
Walkman is better then iPod .. Because the Sony Walkman shows the quality of the music ..

sony owners here are desperately trying to make up stuff against the nano but ultimately we'll all together come to realize the fact that.... sony is crap and that the nano is a sleeker, superior device altogether. You can fight it all you want, but facts are facts.

Ok ipods are NOT MP3 players, they are NOT drag and drop capable, and they are useless without thier crappy itunes software. The sony needs no software, you drag and drop, piece of cake! itunes is a way of controlling the consumer, itunes only works with ipods, therefor if u are a dumbass itune costomer, u must buy an ipod. whats worse is u need the ipod to listen to ur itunes, they wont play on a stereo or dvd player like an mp3 will. sooo if you like to have limitations, buy an ipod!

I love them both! those new nano's are very nice lookking however the sound quality is below average and downloading extra software on a slow computer is no fun at all. The Sony is very versatile in my opinion (drag n drop or windows media player 11) and has great sound quality (everyones saying it!) Both their screens are of the same size and both players are of similar quality. It's looks vs. performance.

Plus, if you go & buy a cool pair of high quality headphones then there is almost no difference in sound either.
Therefore, Sony is pretty much doomed when compared to such a superior device.
Ok, sony's got a greater history than apple and perhaps a greater future, company-wise. But couldn't care any less about that fact.

If one takes into consideration that the Nano is such a beauty to hold & look at when turned off and EVEN MORE impressive when turned on with all its effects (such as cover flow) then the Sony looks very old dated. iPod Nano delivers excellent video quality and I think with a greater resolution than sony.

I have had both models: either the newest iPod and SONY NWZ-A818 and most of the time i was using Sony player-it,s better than iPod. That what Apple have been creating for three generations Sony have done in two (remember NW-A3000 i've still got it) the only Ipod about which i can say that was really good was the second generation of iPod Classic. If you don't know which player buy-choose Sony:betterbattery, better earplugs slot, and better buttons becouse touchpad is JUST touchpad.

I have a quick question:
I keep hearing that the walkman can hold 32 hours of video at 384kbps on 8GB version, and I dont understand the difference between 384kbps, 700 kbps, etc. Is there a huge difference in audio/video quality?

The higher the bitrate (kbps - Kilobits per second), the better the quality. I'd say that, according to the size of the screen (of either the sony or the nano), a bitrate of 384 would be sufficient. Now if you want to watch the video on your computer (bigger screen), I'd go for the 700kbps video. Just so you know, most videos in divx or xvid format are usually encoded with a bitrate between 800kpbs and 1000kpbs.

Yeah, but I already have to think about what cd I'm gonna listen, everytime I grab my iPod. I mean, for music 8gb is enough for me!A friend of me got the Zune (I call it the refrigirator, because of its size) and he was all proud of it cause he'd been bragging about it's price-quality etc etc..But I mean that thing is so huge, and you can't listen to all of that music anyway. So I prefer to change the music every now and then I've got on it.

Hey sounds familiar to me:)...got an iPod nano 2g 8gb right now, got it for like 1 year? But I'm gonna get rid of it as soon as I can. I just wondered why so many people liked the iPod's. So I bought one, Design is nice, but the sound is worse than any other mp3 player. Changing the earbuds doesn't help shit either. iPod sucks balls!

i rekon the walkman, not just because of the video but how long will it last for, the ipod will last like 18 months then you will have loads of problems, but the sony dnt, the sony has a much better sound quality than ipod also i am pretty sure you can set the lightings and contrast of the sony. The ipods frame rate seems faster and its display brighter (and a clearer resolution).

I looked at both at the stores today, I like the sony better (i used to own a 20gig ipod btw) but i'll have to go with the gay looking nano because the clickwheel is so much easier to work with, especially when browsing through hundreds of songs. I can't imagine browing through songs pressing the up and down button everytime..

ipod is brighter, sony is somewhat dark, same screen size, no click wheel, doesn't hold as many songs as the ipod nano. ipod nano wins. anything that Apple makes is always better in my view.

Adjust the settings for brigtness. Doesn't hold the same number of songs? Both players have an 8GB version, which will hold the same number of songs...are you using some other form of math? In the end, the sound quality is the main point and the Sony has MUCH better sound quality and a user-defined EQ as well.
