The best thing about the reconciliation between ChampCar and IndyCar is that there is now one owner of all of the historic video. So, we now get to see these wonderful old races online. Thank you, IndyCar!
3 cars were running turbine engines at this race also there were 3 lotuses 3 coyotes an eagle and an old interscope chassis {with one of the turbines!}
Here you can see the difference between a proved road racer like Mario Andretti and all the oval specialists. It's like when the IRL startet road racing.
a couple reasons really. REAL race fans (in america) who enjoy open wheel have been reared on oval tracks. it's in out blood. we cannot live without it. SECONDLY, with the splintering of the open wheel fan base here because of the split, it has allowed road course racing to gain a popoular foot hold with young viewers many of whom turned to f1 rather than follow two series here. nascar doesn't road race. 2 of 36 isn't racing. it's flirting. it's a novelty. it was huge....it will be again.
that's true, though even when CART/champcar/IRL/whatever did decide they needed a race with right-hand turns, they went to long beach or belle isle (or down here to the gold coast!) rather than use a road course. I mean, road america, road atlanta, sebring, infineon, laguna seca, mid ohio, lime rock, portland, ... even the indy road course. I'm an aussie and i know every race fan in aus would KILL for that kind of selection!
there's no doubt that we have some of the best r.c. in the world. it just takes some time. we can't change the series overnight. right now we have a good mix. i was really sad to see some of those events go away. i adored the surfers race. i was up at 1 a.m. to watch the first one and i saw every one of them to the end. i love road america. i like road atlanta. as good as ANY r.c. may be......i like ovals better. i can't help myself. i moved to indy BECAUSE of indy. don't worry, it'll work out.
@tedthemoose Really, you can't see why it never caught on? How many passes for the lead did you see in this race? How many tight races did you see on the track? Now compare that to what you find on an oval and I think you will find your answer.
@rpdexter01 sorry, but watching someone draft behind another car for eight laps on an oval and then slowly inch past them is just not exciting. and the only reason that oval racing is 'close' is because they have a zillion full-course yellows for every single bit of contact which artificially bunches up the field.
give me divebomb outbraking manouvres into hairpins, elevation changes, and (gasp!) right-hand corners over oval racing any day of the week.
Is it just me, or was the track narrower then than it is now?

i don't know why road course racing is not more popular in america. you guys have such great road courses!

Yea its a bit weird. Events like Mid Ohio still pull a very strong crowd because of its local heritage but in the national eye, it is barely a blip.
