  • I first heard this song in the film Salaam Bombay. It's so cool to hear the whole song, & to see where came from,..Thanks for posting this.

  • Quality needs to come back to Bollywood movies=/

  • Is this Asha Bhosle or Geeta Dutt singing it?

  • @wizardrockiscool No. :) It's Geeta Dutt.

  • Thumbs up if you're listening to this in 2011

  • That is real Hindi cinema, nowadays its only Bollywood!

  • "Hello Mister, how do you do?"

  • This is called real CINEMA ! I love this !

  • I love Helen, she is the best dancer and actress. Team Helen.

  • yeow tottaly yuck song and who the hell is helen is it helen keller

  • @stella9464 STFU

  • GREAT video! and song ;)

  • Tap Tap Tap...foot doesn't stop tapping...:)

  • All-time great foot-tapping song by the great OP Nayyar and perfectly rendered by Geeta Dutt. Last but not the least, it is the also the genius arranger Sebastian D'Souza who has a lion's share in arranging a great deal of golden era songs, this being a stand-out performance.

  • used 2 watch mahal movies channel 4 at the weekends in the 1980s or very early 90s dont have a clue what the lyrics are just thought it very jolly

  • OMG This song is so racist......Chinese should make a song 'Mera Naam But But Ding, I eat curry and bring lots of wind' ;P

  • @BusyRiz Hahahahaha!! My word! That really made me laugh. But the funnier part is, you're not busy selling tapes for 1.99 anymore. LOL.

  • @BusyRiz

...Or rather, "Wo Shi But But Ding".

Besides, I've also seen a few Chinese movies that portray Indians in a stereotypical way too.

  • @BusyRiz LOLL

  • @BusyRiz ...This isn't racist. You are being racist. D<

  • mere naam hai chin chin choo

  • The one and only Helen, the original cabaret dance artiste of the golden era of bollywood films who more or less always got killed on screen, and to say that she did these type of roles for almost 20-30years is simply incredible

  • wow Helen looks really young here!

  • a very great evergreen number

  • love the song but its so damn racist ;p

    chin chin chu :D lmao

  • @d3siboyz You know she also looks like chini _O_ (Chinese eyes)

  • Classic Geeta Roy !!!

  • THIS was bollywood's successful attempt at adding a westernized touch to its films, it's classy and hip..... it was a trend back then....... unfortunately nowadays their efforts at trying to add a western style to their songs has failed miserably...today's directors should watch this and learn a few things from it

  • @sheru7mera7naam So true, for me the 40 to mid 60's were the Golden age of Bollywood Songs after that it's quite dismal and today it's simply pain to the ears.

  • @sheru7mera7naam "adding a westernised touch"???This was a crass COPY of jailhouse rock!!! point is that bollywood was NEVER original, just a matter of how unoriginal!!

  • im gonna send this song to alvin on his birthday lol

  • This song is perfect to swing dance on. Who would have thought that bollywood had such a rich lindy hop culture!

  • this song is evergreen!

  • this song is evergreen

    totaly rocking

    'love this..!!

  • a sweet song from Howrah bridge.. A nice old song !

  • I think she looks more Northern Indian

  • beautiful song.

  • beautiful song

  • b'tful

  • helen was amazing dancer created history

  • They don't make music like this anymore and it is so very very sad. You actually had to have TALENT back then, no autotune or CGI to hide behind. :D

  • The Group Dance of old era and Helan,

Song is an example set for present movie makers and dance composers.

  • Fabulous toe-tapper, pure magic. An all-time classic. Too much I love it!

Also used in music to film, Salaam Bombay.

  • she looks indian frm no angle... n also ppl whoever act in indian movi doesn't necessary mean dat she/he's indian or smth like dat.

  • Love this song! :) :) :) :) :)

  • A Golden classic !!!

  • Amazing!

  • my all time fav. song...

  • Now that's entertainment.

  • nice music, sounds almost as good as Aurthur Smith's Follow me boogie

  • Hi this is great work of music. Love helen and those who made this music! Hilarious, funny, and lifting mood!

  • rocking song.

  • Helen really looks Chinese here...and very pretty might I add, beautiful song from the yesteryears...

  • she is half Burmese.Imagine if she could have performed with elvis, who made his film debut at roughly the same time.

  • Shes not. Shes Indian. Read her profile on Wikidpedia.

  • her nationality is Indian, but she's half English and half Burmese.

  • idiot. she is indian. you look paki.

  • @IronGuy100

    you're the idiot, she's from Burma...duuhhh!! asshole...

  • Thanks for posting this, it's a wonderful song...

  • I don´t think I haver ever heard a more Fun-Filled song,it is brimming with Joy, Energy, Gusto and Humour. The Dancing is Great and the Singing too but the unsung Heroes here are the Musicians, to play like that with such enthusiasm is not easy, believe me. Bravo -Bravo- Bravo !!!

  • What an entrance in to the world of films. This was Helen's very first scene.

  • This song gave Helen a big break but this is not her debut dance. She dance with famous Cuckoo in may movies and before this she dance Alif Laila (1952), Hoor-e-Arab (1953), and number "Mr. John O Baba Khan" in the film Baarish etc.

  • Thank you Yusuf. I stand corrected.

  • Well, I know what the title means, I just don't know what the lyrics mean. Is there a translation anywhere? I want to track down the movie somewhere.

  • What do these lyrics mean? I really love this piece -- and am completely addicted to Geeta Dutt based on her collab with Guru Dutt.

  • Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo means My name is Chin Chin Choo.

  • hamesha jawan geet by o.p and aashaji.

  • It was Geeta Roy who became Dutt after marrying Guru Dutt...

  • Was this Geeta Roy (nee dutt ) ??

  • geeta dutt (nee roy)

  • She is lovely.

  • I assume that the person on the screen is not Geeta Dutt, just the voice.

  • this song is never going get old

  • great song!

  • so where exactly is howrah bridge? In Calcutta?

  • yes calcutta

  • i think its singapore..

  • No it's calcutta.

  • Does anyone know which movie this is?

    Thanks ...

  • Howrah Bridge

  • Howrah Bridge is tghe title set in Calcutta. Big Chinese community there.

  • howarah bridge! an all time hit!

  • 245 - if you can give a reference for that interview I'll be so grateful.

I notice in this clip, where Helen is so young - what nice long arms and legs she has .

  • ahh a classical gem of traditional Indian craziness :D

  • That seems kinda insulting to call it craziness. But admiration is admiration I suppose.

  • Sung by the inimitable Geeta Dutt.

  • 2:10 lololololol

  • this is very very funny!

  • A beautiful gem by the great O P Nayyar. Thanks

  • Helen rules!!!!

  • She looks so much different than she does in this than she does in her later films.

She looks chinese and she seems alot less thicker than in her other movies.

  • thats because she was only 18 in this movie. This movie was released in 1958. Besides, Helen looks more Chinese because her mother is Burmese. Burma is located very close to China. Her father is Indian

  • Wait I heard that she had english in her too ?

  • Her father is only 25% English. People call him 'English' b/c no one has seen him. Even Helen hasn't seen her father. Helen's dad died in 1942 during World War 2. Helen's mother said that Helen's father is INDIAN with a little English in him. People just assumed he was FULL English.

  • Helen mentioned in a recent interview that her father is like only quarter English . She is more Indian. Her mom is from Burma. She got the Chinese looks from her mom.

  • She is thicker because in the documetary "Helen Queen of the Natuch Girls" she mentions that she was 14 when she did this song and that she "paddel" all over so she looked older with curve lol

  • wasn't this song also in the movie Hollywood Bollywood?

  • i think you mean "bollywood/hollywood", but yes, probably. movies like that - movies that try to crossover from indian culture to american culture (in an attempt to appeal to members of the Indian diaspora) - often use old/current Bollywood songs as referential points. Indian-Americans and immigrants often recognize these songs right away, whereas non-Indian viewers usually assume that they are simple a part of the film. (See, e.g. "Chunari Chunari" in Monsoon Wedding)

  • "Hello mister, how do you do?"

So she starts out looking Chinese, and then magically changes into western clothes, while singing in Hindi (I assume) with a mixture of American and Indian musical elements throughout. Ain't these movies grand? And crazy? Encountering them as an American who's never seen any of this stuff before, it's not only amazing, but amusing too.

  • w salam bombay

  • i forgot to say was that the backround music, like forget now about the singing the intro sounds like some melody from a mickey mouse video from the old days, maybe like 1930 or something. haha:) but i luvv this song<3

  • Helen might be a oldie but she is also a goldie. my god she si good. for me this is the first well done western theme of a indian song that bollywood made. i love indian movies from 1950-1980 they were the best ones. this song is good but it was helen that made it spicy.:)

  • How i love this song sooo much!!! Helen is one of my all time fave actresses!

  • i used to remember this song but asrani singing it hahahah i bet i was versy young when i saw this hahaha

  • Surely Iam not of the 1950s ,but having gone through these great videos I now can emphatically say that the people in those days were more disciplined and highly fashionable.

  • excellent !

  • The flavour of the whole film comes through in this song-gangsters,molls and desi action.

  • wow classic, this is one of the few songs i remember from childhood

  • Awesome Helen and Geeta Bali

  • haha omg how much i love this song lol.

  • heeello miiiisterrr, how do you do? Superbe... :-)

  • The 1950's were the pinnacle of music, style dance etc Everything has gone downhill ever since. I just love Indian Rock 'n' Roll

  • lol

    i love this song

  • a classic,,dis sng neva gets old! n helenji is wow!

  • haha bollywood rox!

    :]

  • I think the 50's was Bollywood's peak in terms of acting, songs, scripts - I dont see the same quality these days.

    Greeat song btw :D

  • °°!! A very hilarious dance !!°°

  • helen is definitely NOT 14...

where is she from originally? i know shes asian..

miss briganza is hilarious when she tries to act this out in kuch kuch hota hai..the best movie EVA!!

  • She's from Burma..... someone already wrote that (forgot the name^^)

  • she was born in England in 1939 and moved to India in the 1940's during the world war 11

  • World War Eleven? Man, I was in that coma longer than I thought!

    ;) Ha, ha!

  • she's frm burma...anglo indian father nd burmese mother

  • She was about 18-19 when this movie was made (1958). As has already been pointed out, she was born in Burma to an Anglo-Indian father and Burmese mother. I guess that's probably why she was pretending to be a Chinese/Singaporean girl in this song?

  • One can see dance director Surya kumar himself, dancing in this song, with Helen.

  • yes yes thank u...

  • omg, i was searching for this song since before!!

    thx for uploading!!

this song is the best classic song ever from 50's!!

  • And she was not of Indian origin.

  • She is Helen, icon of the item dance number in Bollywood cinema.

Helen has appeared in over 500 (some estimates come closer to 700) movies in a career that spans 40 years and she has danced in in nearly every single one of those movies, sometimes more than once.

  • who is main lady artist?

  • Helen.

  • Helen. This was her very first stint in Hindi cinema. She was only 14 at the time. :-)

  • I think she was 19.

  • I watched a documentary about Helend and she says that she was 14. Maybe it was a gimmick to make her look younger or something.. I don't know.

  • It's from the 50s. The movie is worth seeing for lovely performances, though this song is definitely the reason I bought the dvd. This is Helen's only appearance in the movie I think.

As to where you can get this movie - Netflix has it for rent, and you can probably buy it from Nehaflix, a reliable source for Hindi dvds in the US (and they are not pirate editions, which is something I care about - I care about not buying pirate Indian movies!).

  • this must be soo old.

  • hooooooa haaa haaa... this is so funny

    love it

  • That would have to be the campest song of all time. Love it.

  • lol lmfao roffl w00t

  • Let me clarify.....

Singer: Geeta Dutt(formerly known as Geeta Roy)

    Dancer: Helen(oiginally from Burma)

Lead Actors in this movie: Ashok Kumar,Madhubala

    Music director: O.P. Nayyar

Completely sure about this info as I am an avid fad of Hindi movies, born n brought up in Bombay, have been hearing this song ever since I was a kid!

  • good one :D

  • I have been looking for this song for so long, I heard it in india 10 years ago and have been in love with the song ever since. Bahut acha.

  • I LOVED this!!! How can I get a copy of this movie?

  • helen is ammmmazin!

  • When I first heard this song (before seeing the video) I had an image of Betty Boop in Indian garb. Anybody else? :-)

  • Maybe in Hum saath saath hain (Karisma & saif)

  • amazing.....all time classic dance number

  • Baabuji main chin se aayi chini jaisa dil laayi

Singaapur ka yauvan mera shanghaai ki angdaayi

Dil par rakh le haath zara, ho jaaye na paagal tu

    Mera naam chin-chin-chu

Oh baabuji main aur aap, kitna achchha huwa milaap

Tujhko dekh tabeeyat bhadki, alaadin ki main hu ladki

Phunk du mantar chhu chu chu, sindbaad the sailor tu

    Mera naam chin-chin-chu

  • Thanks for posting the lyrics:) they make sense!:)

  • Hindi Lyrics:

    Mera naam chin-chin-chu

    Chin-chin-chu baaba chin-chin-chu

    Raat chaandni main aur tu

Hello, mister, how do you do?

  • Maestro O P NEYYAR,rip.

  • Sometimes, the actor and singer are the same, like when Kishore Kumar acted in movies. However, here Helen is acting and Geeta Dutt is singing.

  • IMDB must be wrong here. If you are a keen fan of Hindi films (especially old ones) like me, you would know that Helen only acts and Geet Dutt is a playback singer. Check Wikipedia, any books on old Indian movies or most other websites. I have also seen this actress in other films and she is called Helen, not Geeta Dutt.

  • your right!! my mistake..sorry..

  • wrong

  • classic

  • Most actresses and actors in Bollywood do not have singing ability, so singers are hired seperately to do the soundtracks.

  • Just to provide some clarity, I'll just add this, I know it's easy to get confused with the Bollywood stuff, but rarely, if ever, is the actor or actress the same person who is truly singing. This is why there are singing credits, and acting credits. Usually in India, especially in the Bollywood musical film industry, songs are composed by one person, they hire a singer to sing the song, and the actress hired to be in the film will lip synch to the song during the film.

  • That's Helen, but it's sung by Geeta. o_O

  • no its not

  • kay, if you go to the imdb movie database website, you can see the list of actresses in the film, and Helen is clearly in it. Also, if you look up Helen's biography, this song was a big break for her. The song was SUNG by Geeta Dutt, but please remember the Bollywood tradition of having a singer simply sing the song, but an actress lip synch it. So, in anycase, it's not Geeta Dutt shown in the film.

  • Also, Geeta Dutt, the Bengali singer, did NOT look like that, whereas Helen, the Anglo/Burmese Bollywood actress, does. Don't say it's not Helen without doing some research.
