The Crickets are the backing band here. I hope there is room here for a little quote from Wiki: "..The brothers toured extensively with Buddy Holly during 1957 and 1958. According to Holly biographer Philip Norman, they were responsible for the change in style for Holly and The Crickets from Levi's and T-shirts to the Everlys' sharp Ivy League suits...." Sharp dressed men! And a great song, written by Don Everly.
If I'm not mistaken, that looks like Joe B Mauldin playing bass and Jerry Allison on drums. They were the Crickets; Buddy Holly's backing band in the 50's.
@justmusicandme I was about to make that same observation! I don't know about the lead guitarist, but I think that Jerry Allison is playing drums. (He played drums on "Til I Kissed You" and I think he was featured on some of the Everly Brothers' other hits.) I'm more sure that Joe B. Mauldin is playing electric bass. (It looks like a 1957 Fender
Oh I love it <3 When I hear stuff like this I don't really feel like turning the radio on ever again to avoid hearing what my generation's average person listens to -.-
only problem I have is You tube putting Obama ads on top of the song, I know they gotta advertise, but hey enough already with politics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All we have to do is turn on the TV to get those.
@G8GT364CI Yes, they also played on the record and a lot of other Everly's records. They also backed Eddie Cochran on 3 Steps to Heaven and loads of Booby Vee tracks etc.
Lennon and McCartney BEFORE there was a Lennon and McCartney. Without American singers like the Everly Brother's, there would have been no Beatles or 'British Invasion' in 1964.
@rootedsorrow.....it is all a matter of perception....I say he still is. Of course I am in his age range...and yes, I still make note of good looking guys and Don STILL qualifys ! LOL.....Maybe you haven't seen the video of him appearing with Paul Simon just last May.....check it out !
Growing up in London UK in the 50s and 60s, I loved the Everly Bros - all their songs. Then the Beatles, Rolling Stones and hundreds of English groups. But now at the end of life's journey, I am revisiting the happy times of my early life through these great songs. Thanks for the posting.
I love this clip - just like I enjoy anything by the Everly Brothers - they taught me harmony and a love of words for songs as I grew up - thank you Phil and Don xxx
Many vocal groups based their harmonies on the Everly Brothers. No one ever matched it. It's impossible! These guys grew up singing harmonies with each other. They're like one voice singing two parts.
I'm certain that those J-200s are standard in depth - maybe the colour just makes them seem larger. Beautiful things, though! See how Sonny Curtis is playing simple 'open' chord shapes up the octave using a capo? The band sounds so crisp here - no wonder we were always in awe of the American acts then, they sounded SO good!
It is well known the Beatles were always open about their appreciation of the Everly Bros, and tried to copy their harmonies, as did Simon & Garfunkel...and as we know, both groups learned to harmonize quite well in their own right.
beatle suck, I grew up in the sixties and these freaks came to the US and made a truck load of money and then go back home and bad mouth the USA. They liked our dollor bills while many of us as myself were being drafted and carted off Nam these ingrates smoked dope and criticised the war. Most of us did not like it but we had no choice.
The reason for the two guitarists in the background? The guy on the right is playing electric guitar and the guy on the left is playing the electric bass. The Everlys are playing acoustic guitars. This was the basic instrumentation on most of their records.
By "maple Precision" I meant the solid-maple neck -- no rosewood fretboard. I've had a couple of them over the years, sound great, especially the '51 I had...
@itdoesntmatter56789 im 16 and use Brylcreem orginal. As i have my hair in a 60s style. They still make it but orginal is very hard to get. the mainley make gels now
Nobody, not even John & Paul on their best day, sounded as good as the Everly Brothers. This was all 100 % live which is even more incredible. Don & Phil were born to sing together.
For guitar players this video is great. A maple-necked Precision bass and a maple-necked Strat going through a very rare tweed Fender Twin Amp. they must hav been plying pretty loud...
How great were these guys!? They wrote this, arranged it, and sang it to perfection. This is particularly good as it's 'live' - what about Joe B Maudlin, Jerry Allison and Sonny Curtis, too? This is rock and roll Royalty here....
The Beatles? Give me a break!!! They never sounded this good.
I was just getting ready to post I think that's Joe B. Mauldin when I read your post. I had to see the video again, and damn that IS Jerry, and Sonny! I didn't even recognize them at first. Thanks for pointing it out.
