@beans1308 No- it's you Yanks that appear to be thick - well probably just you in particular - this song is about Sir John Franklin whose expedition disappeared whilst attempting to navigate the NorthWest Passage in 1845.
O how I love this song - have done since heard it when "Cruel Sister" first came out (about 40 years ago!). Thank you sooo much for posting it.
Saw them several times in concert - Sophia Gardens, Cardiff in 1970, then again in Caerphilly. They were just a good live as on record. They were such a fusion of talent that created an enduring sound that, quite literally, lasts a lifetime.
I cant say how glad I am to find this version..I had no idea JR's solo version could be surpassed like this...Jacqui's angel voice and the other members of pentangle turned this song into an experience.
Thanks for posting this album with the lyrics. Your diligence is very much appreciated.
Franklin's tragic journey and the many missions to find him still exercise a powerful hold over the imagination of Canadians and Britons who love history. I hope these brave explorers are never forgotten.
I've seen them performing almost 20 years ago and this was one of the songs they played. Thanks for the memories! And thanks for posting the whole album!
The instrumentation in this is Absolutely

Love this song but the lilting in the background ruins it for me. I think Micheal O'Domhnaill's rendition gives this song its due.

Bob Dylan owes a heap to this tune, theme "I dreamed a dream" and mood.
