WOW... I was in Vang Vieng in 2004-05-06... spent weeks there, and it was a great place to chill... after watching these new vid's I am discusted... young travelers these days have no respect whatsoever... they take advantage of the fact that these people need the money so badly that they have to put up with their imature crap... another beautifull place ruined.
@YukonFishing I just got back from a week in Vang Vieng. The locals definitely do not need money badly. It is one of the richest areas in Laos. I'm not sure if its changed since you were there but most of the locals live in really nice two story houses, and seemed overly welcoming of the backpackers. The tree house, the blue lagoon were awesome. The locals and tourists were amazing, and I literally had the time of my life tubing. No need to be a sour grape :)
if you want to see how tourism destroys a beautiful place go to vang viang.
the young traveller's ignorance of the locals and their culture is second to none. things have changed in the last 25 years, very sad. youngsters spending hours in internet cafe's to chat with their mates back home or sitting in the numerous cafes watching all series of 'friends' - it's very sad!
