  • watch out for mcdojo's if a sifu says you can have a black belt in 1 year walk out!!

  • May I add, make sure the place you practice has a syllabus and lesson plan. If not just walk out. It's important that there is real progression and well thought out methods of teaching.

The difference is night and day.

Nice video. There is definitely a lot of places that make more claims then anything else. They know people are interested in the romantic idea of saying they do Chinese Kung Fu.

  • Hey I have been training in Shaolin Kung Fu, Sanshou/Sanda for about 4 months now, Unfourtanetly I have broken my foot at this class and I am reluctant to return due to the lack of responsability they showed due to this injury, This Temple is run by a real Shaolin Monk, Shifu Yan Zi, He practices Iron Shirt, I am not sure if this is the right style for me and I am wondering If I should change to a different style, I do not want to beat and damage my body because the damage is permanent

  • @NathanSatinSilver There's nothing to stop you studying a different style at all. Do what makes you happiest, you'll perform better.

  • What do you think of Sifu Keith Mazza who teaches out in New Jersey?

  • @mastercatx Hi, I've only seen his videos on YouTube so it's hard to form a really educated opinion, but it appears that he uses a lot of strength rather than pure technique. Not a criticism, but that's how it appears.

  • TU! nice video, it promotes thought, much better to be a thinking student than one who was just influenced by an external source. but I'd like to add that if the instructor cannot answer a question, this is not necessary a bad thing. I'd rather train with someone that says it's traditional rather than someone who always has answers, instructors are students too, and should have plenty of questions too! Happy Holidays! take care man

  • Hey there,

great video. I am looking for a good teacher already for a long time. My former one left my country and now I kinda have high expectations.

I tried already four or five different schools, yet, but really there are so many fucking retards who beat up their students and stuff and usually they are weak themselves.

I still call myself lucky to have had a good teacher for quite some time - just like you did.

however, i wanna move on and learn more.

Thanks again for your vid. Namaste

  • r for 14 years and he seems very knowledgable. My school is very underground no advertising. only 10 students including myself, he has to meet you first and decide if your gonna take it serious and are respectful. I am wondering if these are good things to teach in the first class? First form obvious yes, went over it very well. chain punching on bag, iron palm excersizes on the bag for conditioning hands. and than basic blocking drills. would you think this a good class/Sifu?

  • @DMulah3 I'm not really in a position to tell you if this is a good class/sifu just from what you've told me but the fact that your sifu vets his students before allowing them to train sounds promising. Really though - you get out what you put in so train hard, ask many many questions and train with intention, good luck on your WC journey!

  • Hey, I just started wing chun and my Sifu is from the chow tze chuen lineage direct yip man disciple i believe Chow Tze Chuen is a grandmaster not sure, it goes Me- My Sifu - his Sifu - chow tze chuen -yip man. In my first class I learned the first form for about an hour, than we went to the bag and learned chain punches and he also had us do all of the excersizes for Iron palm you do on the bag as well, we than did the 3 star and 5 star blocking drill, my Sifu has been ia wing chun practicione

  • No worries MrYattix. Have you heard of Grandmaster Klaus Brand of the International Academy of WingChun? He came up with a brand new WC system in 2003. Please look him up and let me know your thoughts. I met one of the Sihing's and took a free lesson. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

  • You're right, I don't know how they got that title and I wouldn't ask. Google their names. Who is your Sifu?

  • @kh280 I'd rather not say to be honest - he's a private person and I wouldn't want anyone to think I was speaking on his behalf.

  • GREAT advice MrYattix. I took Wing Chun years ago and I want to go back. Right now, I am looking for the right school for me in San Francisco, CA. In regards to your advice on avoiding an instructor with the title Grand Master, I only halfway agree with you on that. There are two very credible Wing Chun Sifu's in San Francisco, Grandmaster Chris Chan of U.S. Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy and Grandmaster Garrett Gee of Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun Kung Fu Association. What are your thoughts on that?

  • @kh280 I'll be honest I've not heard of either Sifu, but I would be interested in knowing how they each got their title of Grandmaster?

  • Well reasone piece.. totally agree with almost everything said here.

  • You were saying about how you never heard of a gang of judokas attacking someone and that martiatist knew they were dangerous and don't really want to hurt anyone. That made me think of how Bruce Lee actually learned wing chun for gang fights, and end up having to go to America in his last year or two of high school for beating up a gangsters son.

  • I agree with point 3 my situ teach us out of his garage he has no advertising at all and he doesn't charge alot all he wants to do is teach us the art and some one what Master Fong his situ gave him and when we spare with him are go into double rolling he always says DON'T GO EASY on me we both need to develop and get something out of the training.

  • Hey, is there anyone who knows of a Wing Chun sifu anywhere in North Dakota? I live in Fargo, and I googled looking for a place, everything is miles away! Any North Dakotans with the same problem?

  • ok im like one of the only wing chun fighters in my school.

an i only teach what works for me. an i always tell them"im no master an if a master saw me they would probably say im below amateur".

but i teach them an they, say this was a very good lesson or 10/10.

but while i teach them i have someone to demonstrate it on.(a full contact demonstration with a person whos bigger or faster , or i dont know how they fight.)

what should i basically teach them on there first few days on the basic

  • @l2q i usually break it down 1. centerline theory 2.concept punches 1. properly punch an chain punch 2.chi sau. 3. use it against boxers, kicks, etc etc 4.practice kicks. 1. stop kick/explanation 2. kick balance drills. 3. practice is this good or what else should i show them
  • @l2q I'd agree with this.

  • Great guide to finding a good martial arts instructor in any style! Hopefully people will watch this and avoid getting scammed. I especially love what you say about footwork it is so true and yet so many people appear to miss it completely.

I'm not sure about youtube point though. Many practitioners that post stuff on Youtube are crap but some a really good and pedagogically skilled. I wouldn't discard a teacher solely for that reason. Regardless, keep up the good work!

  • @Sjnjerak Thanks! I take your point about YouTube, that was a bit of a generalisation. But someone starting out won't know a good practitioner from a bad one, sadly!

  • Great guide to finding a good martial arts instructor in any style! Hopefully people will watch this and avoid getting scammed by all of these make-belief martial artists. Keep up the good work!

  • If anyone wants2test their wc internal structure, try doing 3sets of 15, of fist-centered pushups, each pushup should take about 12 sec down, & 12 up. 30 sec rest max between sets. Then immediately get in stance& do the fook/woo section of the form. Each tech taking 20sec out&20 returning, for min of 15minutes. If ur arms shake, get off-center,falter in any way.. it shows lack of internal. Keep going till ur arms cant take it anymore. & repeat this often till you get the desired result.

  • @xiaou2 - When u c ur lackings, start training entire form 1hr total. Keeping main focus on slow moving section & make sure knees r kept deeply bent. Hips rotated forwards. Slow deep breathing. 1hr form is tough done correct. Develops legs, arms, tendon & tissue strength, eventually whole body power+supreme accuracy &power result. Same as Taichi &many other adv. Chinese arts. The secret missing in many schools,& why most Kungfu fails in combat, is due to no internal structural development &use.

  • Thanks this video is very helpful. I noticed that whole you said that your teacher should be able to explain and demonstrate anything under pressure, you didn't otherwise cite sparring as important. How do you feel about sparring?

  • @Bgrimm23 - Sparring isnt really fighting & as such, the way things pan out r not always realistic. Its far better to make sure for example, the guy knows how to handle a hook punch properly. Test knowledge of single techniques. If working, they will work in combination. U dont need2 test the guys fighting ability. Just his ability & knowledge to transfer accurate working material to you. Asking2Spar may also cause offense & take it as a real fight.. which could become very dangerous.

  • @Bgrimm23 - Also, when sparring a stranger, u dont know if u can trust that person. Do they have bad intent? They may try to really harm u, so using full force (Dangerous) is the only real option. Over time, a teacher may develop the trust ,realize ur respect, & allow for some free sparring.

  • @Bgrimm23 Good question. I don't think "sparring" as such is applicable to pure WC. We do what we call "freeflow" whereby one person simulates a non-WC attacker by coming in with hard winging punches, soccer kicks, takedown attempts etc and we use WC structure and techniques against it, but we still have to pull our attacks because you can't "softly" fak sau someone in the windpipe or biu their eyes. By all means get padded up and go half-contact but be very careful you don't end up grappling

  • well put, I throughly enjoyed. thanks!

  • @Fluentmotion You're welcome

  • nice! tell me some more ^_^

  • @eMokif11 Let me know what you want to know, and I'll post a video about it.

  • Excellent video, thanks very much.

  • What are your veiws on Chinaboxer? Compare that to master Wong. I think the difference is evident

  • Very good point dude! i agree with you. This shit Sifu-itis is very bad...

    Every point is right.

  • Agree with you, especially on footwork on ragdolling.

  • Good points, I especially agree with "ragdolling students", albeit sometimes in a application it the opponent may ragdoll because he is stunned from a clean solarplexus shot or whatnot. It's really sad how watered down martial arts are becoming world wide and especially in America. It's always good to find true martial artists (I'm not pretentious enough to call myself a true MA). From your description and the way you talk it appears that you have a good sifu, keep training.

  • You really get it - thanks for posting this. I would add one more point, and it comes from my own perspective having gone from JKD to MMA to WC then back to MMA. A teacher should either engage the students in conditioning, or push them to do it on their own. You CANNOT fight for sh1t without decent physical conditioning. I think in the UK there is more fighting-quality WC, but here in the US there are a LOT of fat sifus. I lucked out and had a GREAT one who held high standards of fitness.

  • @nogunri - Conditionings important 4sparring & 'chasing' fighters. But only marginal bearing on real combat, where ops arnt jabbin & running away, but instead r charging / pressing & throwing full momentum strikes. I know many who can outperform me in endurance... but match my limb accuracy, speed, sensitivity, & power? Not so much. Real WC combat done well, lasts seconds, not minutes. Not everyone will / can stay hyper fit forever.Never underestimate anyone. 1 good hit & life could b over.

  • However, I want to be clear that traditional conditioning, such as doing the form slowly for +1hr, standing on 1 leg in duration, limb clashing/hardening drills, punching sandbags, and other such specific exercises are the good type of conditioning you need to have a working functional structure. Being able to run 5 miles, or fight 5 rounds, is completely different. Might be needed if u are taking on an army of men, such as its designed purpose.. but not really necessary 2b effective.

  • @xiaou2 Dude, trust me - you can get all the power, flexibility, accuracy and speed boxing, jump rope, kettlebells and yoga as you could from doing siu lim tau all day on the rooftop. But guess which one is more fun? And realistically, we all train because it's fun - not because we're human weapons that need sharpening. Second, a fighter that moves isn't 'chasing', but making it harder for you hit them. And NOBODY can hold out against several opponents - go try it, you'll see.

  • @nogunri - Many WC players dont understand the real purpose & benefit of SLT. The Tan/Fook/Woo section is meant to be done ultra slow. Maybe +15 seconds from chest to full extension. Its done 3x, to stress its benefits/importance. In time, it creates a stronger internal framework, much like TaiChi. Stronger tendons, better body unity, better accuracy, power conduction &more.Takes less time2 develop than taichi, but its also not as encompassing. Nothing else can develop this. Its brutal & not fun.

  • @nogunri - Ive seen many WC players & most use WC as external only. Thats not how WCs meant2work. Brute strength & individual muscle strengths easy. Soft reactions & internal power, isnt. Yet its the proper & true way to use WC. WCs a killing art. u may train4fun,I train4 possible encounters/functionality.If i wanted fun,Id train point sparring/Tkd/wushu. U dont have2move much,if u know how2use ur techs properly.2much movement=loss of stability, which is why many WC players r taken down easily.

  • @xiaou2 - Of course, this is 1reason thisguy states2look@the lower half of the body. Many wc cant connect both upper&lower 2operate as 1unit.(power loss, technique loss) They also dont maintain proper footwork spacing, angles,&knee bend, while in combat. Thus no real power & Wc that gets taken down easily because of instability. All the endurance & non wc specific 'fitness training' wont fix this. Its only specialized exercises &drills that will create properly working wc.

  • @xiaou2 Well, maybe I'm just getting old but I think if you walk around thinking about 'real encounters', you're adding unnecessary paranoia to your life. Killing people carries serious implications, and real fights always take two to happen. But don't listen to me :)

  • @nogunri - I never plan on getting into a fight, nor will i probably ever. However, IF that day arises, and it has came really close a few times already (I was able2talk them down)... I want to make sure what I know works properly, even if Im not in tip-top shape. Its not paranoia, just being prepared...like keeping an emergency blanket in the trunk. I too am getting old & thats 1 reason why technical ability is more important than brute strength or super endurance.

  • @nogunri - As for multiples, I wouldnt expect u2know about it.. considering ur level of replies & depth of training. WC was designed2take out govt. forces. It was designed4quick disposal of multiples. That however, isnt possible w/ lackluster levels of training+poorly developed specialty muscles& poor understanding of the principles. If u have trouble w/ 1 fighter, ur not going to be taking on 2 & win.

  • @xiaou2 Oh, I get it. Internet shit talk baiting. Nice. Look, you don't know me or how much I've trained or what my favorite color is or NOTHING. So, please - never mind keyboard cowboy.

  • @nogunri - I dont shit talk. Only reply based on the information given. Overall, u made the judgment against others, & I called u on it. Im also not entirely happy about the lackluster level of WC presented to the world at times, which ends up making the art look like a joke. Many of the reasons for this, are shortcuts & misunderstandings.

  • Well put!
