The difference between calling a subwoofer a "sub" and dubstep "dub" is that "sub" refers to many items but all very unrelated to the type of a speaker, whereas dub and dubstep are both musical genres and could possibly be confused, not to mention that the genre of dubstep was inspired by dub.
