i was ashamed of being filipino for a long long time...especially in high school. it was only a couple of years ago that i was able to come to terms with being one in this white man's world. oh btw, ifili.com doesn't work.
stupid video, we filipino proud of ourselves, not embarassed of our looks, jobs, status or anything, we accept who we are, we just a happy people not insulting anyone's job
seeing as ur filipino yourself why dont you tell us ... are filipinos ashamed of themselves? whats the shame in being filipino - is it cuz u guys were colonized? or that you work as maids in the gulf? i dunno
@xxxJezebelxxx I certainly have my opinions, but to open this discussion with me would require a whole lot more than 500 characters ;) Let me just say that there are a lot of young Filipinos who are angry, but a lot of young people in general are not and have never been very good at research...
@xxxJezebelxxx I think what people need to do is recognize and accept that the very crimes that make them angry happened. And the very crimes that are going on currently in Philippines are embarrassing. But... get over it. They have never and won't dictate who you are. And Filipinos - if they are ashamed - need to channel that passion into something more productive for their people if they still care. If not, move on, and don't be a jerk to Filipinos with accents and cultural mannerisms.
it's a white mans world dear. most ethnics get made fun of in the media here... but imho i think indians & arabs have worst stereotypes that are more aggressive. seriously the only way to disarm those stereotypes is to go out there and make fun of them yourself like that dude russell peters does. i've never thought filipinos were a ''laughing stock'' as you said, more like fun to be around.
@xxxJezebelxxx Preach. And yes... Indians and Arabs do have a harsh stereotype. And, maybe laughing stock is the wrong term. If I could explain it better, I think some Filipinos are concerned that the cultural rape and economic implosion caused by their ineffective government could overshadow their own worth and accomplishments. It SHOULDN'T. But I know of one employer at a high-tech company in Silicon Valley, CA, who said that they get a lot of international resumes. Indians, South Africans....
@jokway they're strongly considered. Resumes from places including Philippines are pushed to the bottom of the pile. It's not right. But that's what happens, and this friend of mine told me his is not the only company in the area that does that. I do agree that Filipinos are fun to be around. Well, most of them, hahah! I hope Filipinos don't allow themselves to be filled with hopelessness b/c of stereotypes. I hope they continue to persist, b/c a person's value is only determined with time.
Hey man, great vid. I love your work. I would just like to clarify about that one bit you said at 7:33. What exactly did you mean by "it happened?" What IT are you referring to?
@sakalaris Cultural rape as encouraged by imperialism. I only fast forwarded to the time you gave me, so I didn't listen to what I said before it. I'm pretty sure that's what I'm talking about, though.
No, I'm not. But I am VERY embarrassed of those Filipinos who do stupid shit that makes our nationality look bad. There are Filipinos who tries their best to show the world our good points but what happens? Some idiot screws it up. IMO, it only takes atleast 5% of the Filipino population that lives in that particular country to tarnish the good image that their fellowmen is trying to build up. *face palms*.
That's just it. Why can't we just admit it. We are embarrassed! I didn't begin embracing my culture until very late. I mean u see the flat nosed, dark skinned, heavy accent and u think. I'm like that?
Btw, i'm not Filipino-but honestly I want 2 be (I know-that probably sounds weird. . .) I think that Filipino's are a very cool and have a really unique background. *If I was Filipino, I definitely would not be ashamed* (btw, I'm a mix. One of my parents is cuban/jamaican, the other is white.)

but yeah i can see hpw filipinos can be mad. but there not jsut picking on filipinos. it pretty much goes for any developing country...
To answer this video with complete seriousness. The Philippines medical system is woeful. Having said that so are many other country's including Australia in the same boat. WHY? because medicine is taken as a business as opposed to a profession of healing. In SA, where I live part of the year. Only Argentinian and Cubans can be trusted. Why? Because with my own eyes in the University of Havana, the dicta "Medicine is not a business", if you think that way get out.
@barriocubalindo try getting medical treatment in the philippines first before you say that... or better yet try studying english first before making such comments... and how well do you know the University of the Philippines? i don't think you have any idea how is it like studying there...
Are you mad?? Japan yes for sure Thailand, yes with reservations Philippines never. I don't need to study English, frankly I do not know what that has to do with this blog. Which shows your inability to comprehend? Lick your US masters, be a nice servant, Just keep quiet like a nice US poodle.
i like the slow mo hahaha I think that "joke" is out of place and not funny at all. but hey it only proves one thing... Americans are WATCHING US...? Carefully hehe :P ok... why dont we just Make a JOKE of George Bush's BLUNDER!!! AMERICAN PRIDE!?? lol they elected him... well... :)
Ahihihi..who watches this GARBAGE show anyway??ahihihi..ur TYPICAL dumb white MAGGOT????ahihihi..These degenerate fucks...desperate wives..ahihihi..a show for ur TYPICAL LOW IQs........ahihihi..terri..is one UGLY white BABOON..ahihihihi.. Joke only..lighten up...
Hey re4gamez...maybe you could explain what you think I "don't understand" instead of "lol"ing and patronizing me "poor american." Maybe you could have posted an intelligent response and I could have learned something from you instead of you just patronizing me, but apparantly you are not mature enough.
because they don't think about the filipino's feelings, instead they used the philippines to make fun and make their ratings higher. next time maybe they should think first before they do things. but sorry if i sound rude, as a filipino i just said it to make them realize wut they're saying.
I think that the writer of Desperate Housewives like literally pinned a world map on a wall and threw a dart on it, and the dart just happened to land on an "unknown country" (for him at least) called "Philippines"
My "Hypocrite" comment was meant as a reply to "re4gamez" not the video poster. I was watching DH when that comment first aired and I think I literally gasped out loud. I can't believe they said that. It's ignorant and only furthers the worlds opinion that americans are conceited and close minded. Believe me, not all americans are like that! I think the show has been rightfully chastised, I know as an american I lost respect for the producer.
woah! kuya, the last bit of your vid (not the ifili part, the part before that) really made me feel proud to be a filo. I'm not saying I'm ashamed of it or anything, I'm actually proud to be one.. its just that hearing someone else say it out loud gives me this very warm feeling of happiness... your vid just made my day... thanks!
InkaPeru, moron stop, you do not know or been around of many filipinos, but you sounded like you want to be,not gonna happened ,its just on ur dream, its ur fantasy, meaning ur are sick, get some help
we don't know the reason too....lol....but as for me i love being filipino...thats why i don't like it when people mistakes me for chinese or ( put an asian ethnicity here)......because i'm not....
That scenario writer probably did not mean it that way, but as you said ... it was just totally thoughless.
And I would feel angry too.
->> because it just portrays a totally wrong image to the world. and this is just not right.
For example, if I was from Kazakhstan, I would totally boycott the movei Borat. Because it portrays Kazakhastan as a totally underdevelopped country, which it is not.
2) My best friend is half Filippino and she is very proud of it.
i stuggle to some white people when i came there step in here in usa when i first step in this country... some alot of white and spanish they is really suck and racism..
Its just thoughtlessness. the writers just thought it would be funny. but, i guess they didnt think it through...they didnt think about who they were affecting; who they were hurting....GO PINOYS!!!!
that is a very good point. and certainly a lot more refreshing from the same ideology that comes from nearly every fellow pinoy ive talked to about this issue.
i think that the problem originated from, essentially, how the u.s. media is. its very "white washed, and you hardley, if ever, see an asian american as the protagonist of a movie. we are often potrayed as some backround shadow, or that goofy sidekick, etc.
so many racial barriers that need to be broken down.
about we "filipinos" are allowing other nationalities to make as subject of joke or fun i think not that's why our kababayan in U.S is protesting & demanding for an apology in the show, it's prove lang we will never allow anybody na paglaruan tayo.
jokway, i am working here in Paris just wanted to answer the question if i feel ashame of my filipino heritage inspite of seeing other cultures absolutely NOT, you can take away every single filipino in the Philippines by given a chance but nobody can take away Philippines in every single filipinos heart. We have a lots of values & cultures to share to the world. At yung sobrang pagmamahal sa pamilya ang pinakamatindi it's BEYOND COMPARE walang makakatulad kaya nga nagkalat ang mga OFW.
Just thought that I would pose a challenge to your question, 'is it our fault?' I think it's sad that many marginalized people in the U.S. feel that it's their fault that they are 'othered'. Some people just aren't given equal opportunities...oftentimes b/c of (ahem) institutional racism. BUT there's always hope. We should encourage other Filipinos to enter the media so that we can tell OUR stories and empower ourselves.
Anyhoo, I think you have a wonderful mind and great opinions. Isang mahal!
I LOVE YOU. (not in a crazy fanatic way, but your mentality, your opinions, your thoughts, you are not the average 23 yr old guys!) your parents must be damm proud. i know i am!
hey u know wht i must say tht i like wht u do and how u stand out by means of being you, by being a true filipino even u dont know how to speak the language..i do understand.... i just want to know more about u? coz u seem a very intelligent person and wht sort of field are u into..studying or working wht ever..guess im curious? tnx.. keep it up dude.
getting the philipino doctors angry is one thing, gettig the wole government involved however, is another. Fist of all,if the government hadnt made such an outrage infront of the media then 90% less people would be aware by that remark...I would never had known about that line since it was cut off by my country and many others....
yh i agree an ishew that iwould like to address people think that filipenos are a member of the church of christ or iglasia ni cristo coz day cum frome the philipenes i dont no if ur a member but i think that is out of order
if he doesnt speak tagalog then probably it is because he was born not in the philippines, or just grew up there wherever he is. i am 22yrs old right now. i was educated in the philippines and i just moved here to US. i was never ashamed, not even in a littlest bit, of my being Filipino.
i ♥ desperate housewives, but im from the philippines, nd it ticked me off rite there. im frickin proud 2 b filipina, nd its realy hurtful 2 c american tv shows making fun of us.
I'm sorry you missed the point. It was not any developing country,, it was the Philippines that was pointed out in the show. Philippines. Not India, not Pakistan, not Mexico,, Philippines. Philippines college degrees is not even recognized in the US did you know that? Even if you got it from UP. You're not really filipino. Why do a vlog on the Phillipines?
it doesnt matter if philippine degrees arent recognized in the states. point is, they pass state licensure exams which is actually the whole point of practicing their profession here. with that, i think they are on equal footing with the ones who acquired their degrees here.
Filos are an easy target for jokes because we are seen as fun and light-hearted people. We normally take jokes lightly. For example, we sometimes make fun of Visayan accent but it does not mean we are demeaning our Southern brothers. We just want to have fun. We are not one of the most politically correct bunch of people. It does not totally offend us. That is the impression that the outsiders get from us.
its white people that wrote that episode and most white people are so ignorant and think highly of themselves and they put other non white poeple down. ugh thats the reason why i rarely have white friends
There was a scandal a while back about Filipino's buying their medical school diplomas from corrupt teachers. It was pretty big news. Some students didnt even graduate or complete their programs. I think thats where the joke got its origins.
If you guys want to know more about the Asian side of the Philippine culture and about the beauty that the spanish took away from us, then hop on to my channel. I only have a few videos, but more will come.
touched a raw nerve there, huh? well, 4give me, but i guess what I was trying to say was, we're not living up to our full potential. oh well, too late now, hehhe. HELLO FROM PHILIPPINES EVERYONE!!!
If the Philipines was under spanish rule for over 400 years, then why does hardly anyone speak spanish there? The Philipines should be like Mexico by now, how most people speak spanish and are Roman Catholic.
300 years actually. A third of our vocabulary are Spanish, a third Malay, and around a third is English based. Our surnames are mostly in Spanish if you notice, and Philippines is more than 90% Roman Catholic, the largest per capita outside US and Italy.
Because the spanish people didn't taught us the language very well, they're don't want locals to be in the goverment. and that's in Zamboanga We and Mexicans share the same fate by the spaniards. We even shared foods/products through Galleon Trade de Mejico y Las Filipinas. We also have Quesadillas, Paella, Tortillos, etc. Mexicas also have Adobo, Tuba, Sinigang, etc. The only difference we have is the language, but even the mexican spanish are not perfect, like the ones in Spain.
If you showed evidence that Americans who attended Filipino medical schools were just as likely to pass the medical exam as those who did not, then you have a good case against the joke. Ok. Where's the evidence?
Very good, dennisfianders0707. The evidence? Well, you're going to have to take my word for it: *ahem*.... my aunt (physician), my cousin (radiologist), my friend (cosmetic surgeon), all working now in the states in Pennsylvania, New York and Texas respectively, and all contemplating starting their own practices. Soon to join them is my cousin, who's about to study in Ateneo, (I think). Otherwise, I never would've made this Vlog :)
I think you're a big Joke! Mr dennisfiander. MY Cousin, My brother in law and my Auntie all graduated in the Philippines and all Doctors working in California! My Brother living in Australia is also Doctor.
Medical training costs money, so countries whose students can afford to pour more money into it may have better training. The lists I looked at had to do with the percent of people who could pass the medical exam to practice in the USA. I think that's a great way of picking a medical school, because who wants to have to take that exam many times.
Next we should look internationally. I saw a list of foreign medical schools that offered a US-style education. The ones that did the best were in Israel. Greneda did not do so well. I don't recall seeing Filipino medical schools on that list. But first we should see the list and then decide.
I think we should begin this conversation with the facts. I recall seeing a US ranking of US medical schools. Harvard scored 100%. Johns Hopkins scored 68%. Everything else was lower. So even in the US there are big differences.
Why exactly are Filipinos so upset about what a FICTIONAL character said on a SOAP OPERA? Filipinos need thicker skin. Outside the Filipino community, this comment barely made a ripple.
Terry Hatcher's character is NOT an influential politician making important policy decisions. This is meaningless soap opera where a comment was made in jest. The show has absolutely no power over me, and I as a Fil-Am refuse to let it upset me.
I beleive the writers of DHW just mereley wanted to create a satire of the Philippine medical school system because they really believe deep in their hearts that 3rd world medical schools are in fact inferior. Its just that simple. and these arogant bastards just dont give a damn if it hurts filipinos. They used Filipinos because they are visible in the medical field.
oh bih..... ...... ey man FUK Desperate Houzewives... i never liked dat show anyway.. and i aint in medical field or w/e but i dont like how dey said that shi! lmao.... oh yeah, wuzzup josh homie G skittlez ill c u at december man
Hey Jokway, This is just my opinion..But on the Joke on DHW, Could it be that the writers are from Southern California, so are the actors, camera men, and so on and so on. The reason I say this is that filipino have a pretty big group down there, and a lot of them turn to the medical field for thier careers. Becuase of this they are seen in hospitals up and down Southern California. So they thought of the joke, but not the people behind the joke. It's still not right, but just a thought.
I actually dont find it hard 2 blieve that the writers could b filipino, or hav pinoy friends. thats wer the inspiration 4 the jok wud prob come from. but right, they didnt think of other ppl who could be hurt by the jok, that happens all the time.
Yes! There's that possibility. Some of the worst anti-filipino comments actually came from filipinos! You know, those lonely, lost fil-am, pinoys who recently migrated abroad, folks who are angry with their being pinoys, guys who are not proud of their color, nose, height, and parents.
I agree with you, man. It's fucking stupid how some Filipinos degrade their own nationality; I ask myself why do they do that to themselves. I had to deal with someone who told me that I don't know the term "Filipino", saying I'm stupid not knowing it. I'm not Filipino but I do love Filipinos; they treat me with respect!!!
as an objective outsider i believe the only reason the phillipine medical system would be amusing would be the faith healers who supposedly reach inside of you to remove tumors. otherwise the technicians here in b.c. canada are amazing phillipinas, which is the face we see.
im sure that western countries were excluded from the joke because it wouldn't have made as much sense to people to be as demeaning as picking a third world country that known for there medical schooling. however im also sure that there are a lot of people that know that the Philippines have some of the best nursing schools in the world hands down.

Hey re4gamez...maybe you could explain what you think I "don't understand" instead of "lol"ing and patronizing me "poor american." Maybe you could have posted an intelligent response and I could have learned something from you instead of you just patronizing me, but apparantly you are not mature enough.
eg135687 2 years ago
because they don't think about the filipino's feelings, instead they used the philippines to make fun and make their ratings higher. next time maybe they should think first before they do things. but sorry if i sound rude, as a filipino i just said it to make them realize wut they're saying.

btw my comment "this american don't understand anything lol" wasn't my reply to u. because all he said was "boring!"

I think that the writer of Desperate Housewives like literally pinned a world map on a wall and threw a dart on it, and the dart just happened to land on an "unknown country" (for him at least) called "Philippines"

Hypocrite. By saying that you are just as asinine as whichever writer wrote that line for DH.
eg135687 2 years ago
My "Hypocrite" comment was meant as a reply to "re4gamez" not the video poster. I was watching DH when that comment first aired and I think I literally gasped out loud. I can't believe they said that. It's ignorant and only furthers the worlds opinion that americans are conceited and close minded. Believe me, not all americans are like that! I think the show has been rightfully chastised, I know as an american I lost respect for the producer.

1)Desperate Housewives:
That scenario writer probably did not mean it that way, but as you said ... it was just totally thoughless.
And I would feel angry too.
->> because it just portrays a totally wrong image to the world. and this is just not right.
For example, if I was from Kazakhstan, I would totally boycott the movei Borat. Because it portrays Kazakhastan as a totally underdevelopped country, which it is not.
2) My best friend is half Filippino and she is very proud of it.

that is a very good point. and certainly a lot more refreshing from the same ideology that comes from nearly every fellow pinoy ive talked to about this issue.
i think that the problem originated from, essentially, how the u.s. media is. its very "white washed, and you hardley, if ever, see an asian american as the protagonist of a movie. we are often potrayed as some backround shadow, or that goofy sidekick, etc.
so many racial barriers that need to be broken down.

about we "filipinos" are allowing other nationalities to make as subject of joke or fun i think not that's why our kababayan in U.S is protesting & demanding for an apology in the show, it's prove lang we will never allow anybody na paglaruan tayo.

jokway, i am working here in Paris just wanted to answer the question if i feel ashame of my filipino heritage inspite of seeing other cultures absolutely NOT, you can take away every single filipino in the Philippines by given a chance but nobody can take away Philippines in every single filipinos heart.

I'm sorry you missed the point. It was not any developing country,, it was the Philippines that was pointed out in the show. Philippines. Not India, not Pakistan, not Mexico,, Philippines. it doesnt matter if philippine degrees arent recognized in the states. point is, they pass state licensure exams which is actually the whole point of practicing their profession here. with that, i think they are on equal footing with the ones who acquired their degrees here.

There was a scandal a while back about Filipino's buying their medical school diplomas from corrupt teachers. It was pretty big news. Some students didnt even graduate or complete their programs. I think thats where the joke got its origins.

If the Philipines was under spanish rule for over 400 years, then why does hardly anyone speak spanish there? The Philipines should be like Mexico by now, how most people speak spanish and are Roman Catholic.
viewtifuljoe02 4 years ago
a lot of our words are the same in spanish and most filipinos are roman catholic, although im not one...
BlankPages0018 4 years ago
300 years actually. A third of our vocabulary are Spanish, a third Malay, and around a third is English based. Our surnames are mostly in Spanish if you notice, and Philippines is more than 90% Roman Catholic, the largest per capita outside US and Italy.
pinoytutor 4 years ago

Ok. Where's the evidence?
dennisfianders0707 4 years ago
Very good, dennisfianders0707. The evidence? Well, you're going to have to take my word for it: *ahem*.... my aunt (physician), my cousin (radiologist), my friend (cosmetic surgeon), all working now in the states in Pennsylvania, New York and Texas respectively, and all contemplating starting their own practices. Soon to join them is my cousin, who's about to study in Ateneo, (I think). Otherwise, I never would've made this Vlog :)

jokway 4 years ago

birdbrainz2 4 years ago
Medical training costs money, so countries whose students can afford to pour more money into it may have better training. The lists I looked at had to do with the percent of people who could pass the medical exam to practice in the USA. I think that's a great way of picking a medical school, because who wants to have to take that exam many times.
dennisfianders0707 4 years ago
Next we should look internationally. I saw a list of foreign medical schools that offered a US-style education. The ones that did the best were in Israel. Greneda did not do so well. I don't recall seeing Filipino medical schools on that list. But first we should see the list and then decide.
dennisfianders0707 4 years ago
I think we should begin this conversation with the facts. I recall seeing a US ranking of US medical schools. Harvard scored 100%. Johns Hopkins scored 68%. Everything else was lower. So even in the US there are big differences.
dennisfianders0707 4 years ago
awesome bro... continue the great work.. =)

Also . . .
It's a shame we aren't using our energy to resolve other issues that are more important, like oh, I don't know:
1) political corruption in the Philippines,
2) abject poverty,
3) education,
4) the Philippine economy
5) etc . . .
Instead we're wasting energy crying over a silly joke. I'll probably receive tons of hateful replies, but guess what, I could care less. =)

Re: Desperate Housewives
Why exactly are Filipinos so upset about what a FICTIONAL character said on a SOAP OPERA? Filipinos need thicker skin. Outside the Filipino community, this comment barely made a ripple.
Terry Hatcher's character is NOT an influential politician making important policy decisions. This is meaningless soap opera where a comment was made in jest. The show has absolutely no power over me, and I as a Fil-Am refuse to let it upset me.
tennislover949 4 years ago

I beleive the writers of DHW just mereley wanted to create a satire of the Philippine medical school system because they really believe deep in their hearts that 3rd world medical schools are in fact inferior. Its just that simple. and these arogant bastards just dont give a damn if it hurts filipinos. They used Filipinos because they are visible in the medical field.
Gibralter9 4 years ago
oh bih..... ...... ey man FUK Desperate Houzewives... i never liked dat show anyway.. and i aint in medical field or w/e but i dont like how dey said that shi! lmao.... oh yeah, wuzzup josh homie G skittlez ill c u at december man

your "vlogs" are really astounding!..
iamleeyah 4 years ago
Hey Jokway, This is just my opinion..But on the Joke on DHW, Could it be that the writers are from Southern California, so are the actors, camera men, and so on and so on. The reason I say this is that filipino have a pretty big group down there, and a lot of them turn to the medical field for thier careers. Becuase of this they are seen in hospitals up and down Southern California. So they thought of the joke, but not the people behind the joke. It's still not right, but just a thought.
wabr6 4 years ago
I actually dont find it hard 2 blieve that the writers could b filipino, or hav pinoy friends. thats wer the inspiration 4 the jok wud prob come from. but right, they didnt think of other ppl who could be hurt by the jok, that happens all the time.
jokway 4 years ago
Yes! There's that possibility. Some of the worst anti-filipino comments actually came from filipinos! You know, those lonely, lost fil-am, pinoys who recently migrated abroad, folks who are angry with their being pinoys, guys who are not proud of their color, nose, height, and parents.
saltshock 4 years ago
I agree with you, man. It's fucking stupid how some Filipinos degrade their own nationality; I ask myself why do they do that to themselves. I had to deal with someone who told me that I don't know the term "Filipino", saying I'm stupid not knowing it. I'm not Filipino but I do love Filipinos; they treat me with respect!!!
BigRice21 4 years ago 2
as an objective outsider i believe the only reason the phillipine medical system would be amusing would be the faith healers who supposedly reach inside of you to remove tumors. otherwise the technicians here in b.c. canada are amazing phillipinas, which is the face we see.
bohogirl1 4 years ago
im sure that western countries were excluded from the joke because it wouldn't have made as much sense to people to be as demeaning as picking a third world country that known for there medical schooling. however im also sure that there are a lot of people that know that the Philippines have some of the best nursing schools in the world hands down.
