  • Damn, that looks like so... so much fun. Eargasm extraordinaire.

  • that's not your life we wanna hear about ! play that shit !

  • You look like Steve Perry

  • Mind blown @8:40 ... by the way, get the MS-20 app on the ipad, it's worth it.

  • excuse my french but i would love to fuck that machine lol

    talk about amazing !

  • I got this as a gift and sold it cheap, thank God for Google now a days, won't happen again!

  • Hi, very informative vids! just wondering if you used any stereo effects on the mix. It sounds nice and tingly in my ear.

  • @dannyvanthoff Thank you! No, I record the synths directly to a digital recorder without effects to give viewers a more accurate representation of the sound.

  • I saw one of these on ebay going for pretty cheap thought about buying it but the only problem was that one of the keys was messed up and sprung. Can this be fixed without damaging anything.

  • Is it really that weird? The Moog Voyager has pretty much the same faux modular CV panel for patching.

  • new haircut will help...

  • @Jacno77 Uh, "next time?" You've got tens of my videos to go through... I don't think you'll be happy with what you get. "The shit" is helping people understand synthesis and hear the functionality of these synths as it actually sounds, without genre preferences, effects which conceal the actual sound, or other ACTUAL shit. If you want to hear someone wank in the style of your choice, you're not looking for a synth demo, you're looking for a performance. Good luck to you.

  • @AutomaticGainsay you did what now?

  • @Jacno77 The so called "shit" was actaully very interesting

  • Will you people stop watching this video and watch the higher quality version? Shame on you! : )

  • Always hated the MS-series. I think they sound like sawmills....

  • @anonymusum I'm not a giant fan of the MS-20... but I absolutely love the MS-50.

  • @AutomaticGainsay

Why? The MS-50 sounds the same - only more features.

By the way: do you know the monophonic, analogue PPG synths (PPG 1050) ? In my opinion absolutely awesome. But - yeah I know - how could you get one....

Anyway: brilliant test - like always! But for the MS-20 I would implement a new category: worst analogue sound ever.........

  • @anonymusum It is my understanding that the MS-50 has a different filter setup than the MS-20... and that's at least true inasmuch as it lacks the lowpass/highpass in series. As such, it has a warmer, less intense sound that I prefer.

I have never heard any analog PPG synths, so I don't know!

Ha ha, yeah, to me, the MS-20 is the least vintage analog-sounding vintage analog. It is too stable, too pure, and too intense!

  • @anonymusum lolololol. Hells yes.

  • more then half showing instead of more then half of the time talking would have been nice ^

  • @Goth108 Checking the rest of my channel to discover a whole series of demonstration of this synthesizer before you post a snide comment would have been nice, too.

  • he sounds like Brian from Family Guy sometimes:P

  • Hi, I'm new to synths and I REALLY like the sound the Korg ms-20 produces. However, I have almost no money.

Any suggestions for a cheaper vintage/vintage sounding synth that will sound as close to the ms-20 as possible for a much lower price? Thanks! Great video!

  • @leviathonCage The MS-20, because of its low pass and high pass resonant filters in sequence, has a very unique sound (when implementing that arrangement to its fullest). If it's that sound you're after, you're going to have to go modular to get it. However, I always point out that apart from that specific sound (of those two filters), the Yamaha CS-15 is actually a more powerful vintage analog synthesizer for far less money.

  • @AutomaticGainsay Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I have already started to look in to them.

  • @AutomaticGainsay Thanks, I already started to look in to it.

  • haha everyone needs to turn Transcriber on and then skip to 7:30

    "Hope you're well, Ho. "

    Synths can be so cruel

  • mr oizo used this for flat beat....

  • Hi Mr. Doty, I recently purchased a Korg MS-20 off ebay and i received the version 1.0 (for windows XP) software, after having installed the software I was asked for an authorization code, which I haven't been able to obtain yet, could you give me some advice?

  • @BlingVision I'm afraid I can't help you. What you're talking about is the modern Legacy software controller from Korg, and what I'm demonstrating is the analog synthesizer from 1978.

  • @BlingVision riiiiiiight

  • hey man cool vid, got a question for you, i have an oppertunity to buy one of these things, i have a mac computer, there is no software, what/where/how do i download something to get it to work?? thanks man

  • @AviatorAndyK If you need a computer to make it operate, you have the Korg Legacy version, which isn't actually a synthesizer, but a software controller!

  • hi thanks for the vid. I just received an ms20 from japan, everything seems fine apart from the control wheel does not do anything. No pitch change or anything! Should this work or does it need patched or something?

    Thanks

  • @cprostudio Reason not to worry: The mod wheel doesn't work unless you patch it to something. Reason to worry: The mod wheel doesn't work unless you patch it to something. : ) One of the sad things about the MS-20 is that it takes a fair amount of patching to get pretty standard effects provided without patching by other synths. But, I'm sure it won't interfere too much with your enjoyment of that synth! : )

  • @AutomaticGainsay thanks man, just got it working but its weird, if i push it up it changes pitch of osc2 if i pull it down it changes pitch of osc1. (control wheel to VCO 1+2 CV IN)

  • time

  • Go to 6.34 to skip the bullshit

  • @TheNoseMusic Aboslutely! Why would you want to hear information when you can watch some wanker wank? ha ha ha

  • hey who does not like analog? come on!!!

  • haha no room for knobs!!!

  • Does look like there are too many jacks, Potentiometers are smaller than jacks, and cheaper. I dont understand why they use jacks. I wish I owned one of these wonders, but now they are too expensive for me :(.

  • @Baumanncito Who's pompous? Me or the uploader? I wanted to mention I also own a Modular Moog, and a very large one, but I didn't want to come off as "the topper" in the conversation! It's not working, but I have it. Pompous? I never got that impression from the uploader. He's pretty down to Earth I think. And me? I was collecting synths when you could buy them for a few hundred dollars, not a few thousand. I remember in 1991 - "$300 for this piece of shit ARP 2600? I want a MOOG!" What a dummy!

  • Enjoyable demonstration! I like your straightforward approach, good chops, and knowledge of the synth's parameters. I own an ARP 2600, minimoog, Korg Polysix, OB-8, Yamaha SK-30, SH-101, Prophet 5, Akai AX-80, Juno 60 and I fully agree with your statement that all the different synths have a characteristic sound. Examples - minimoog, Juno 60, and SK series all have VERY characteristic sounds! They definitely DO NOT all sound the same! Many are ambiguous, but some are very characteristic!

  • @jazzliscious13 Hey, thanks for stopping by, watching, and for your kind words. It's nice to hear from someone who owns a number of vintage synths! If you'd like you can check out my ARP 2600 videos and let me know what you think of them!

  • 2:29 is just hilarioussssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!! "We'll just PUT JACKS!!!!!!!!!"

    Otherwise great video!^^

    greetings from France! ;)

  • This guy makes me laugh. JUST JACKS. WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS.

  • 2:51 XD

  • you look like balky

  • Personally, I think they just wanted to compete with the ARP 2600, nothing more.

  • @Desmaad If they did, they were a bit too little, too late. : )

  • 8:45 mmmmhhhhhhh, really good!!!!!

  • nice vid!

what is your opinion on the legacy collection?

is the digital made sound nearly as good as the original?

  • @bnzo00 I have never used them. I have no doubt that they're functionally great, and probably sound good enough. However, I think playing the real thing is always going to be a different experience because of the natural aspects of analog sound, and the ability to play and use a synthesizer without interfacing with a computer.

  • Great video, i like your style.

  • @macmurphy74 Thank you!

  • you can get the korg legacy collection with the ms20 usb controller for about 300 used -

analog - -is good but but hard to keep up the legacy collection is made by korg and is a pretty good value

    5* for the intro :)

  • Thanks for these, I'm really looking into buying one and I really don't wan't to jump in blind. The poster below claims they go for 2.5K on ebay? Dont think so, korg made lots of these and there are many out there less than $500.

  • @TheJenn68 I don't think they're worth that much... but I seriously doubt you'll ever find one for less than $1000.

  • @AutomaticGainsay

Uhh....yeah you are right. After some data mining I see that the ones under 500 bucks are actually "MS20 iC" models, retro looking 3/4 scale MIDI controllers that used to be sold with software. If I am paying a grand for a synth I may just look at an ms2000, but I really like the Gary Numanesque sounds from the MS20

  • @AutomaticGainsay if you can find one for less than 1000 pounds let alone dollars you will be the luckiest man alive in the synth world... well maybe.

  • @electro257 You can definitely find one for less than £1000, but you'd have to find it in the U.S.!

It wasn't that long ago that the standard price for an MS-20 was $800...

  • @electro257 just got one of craigslist for 250 bucks lol

  • i'm sorry I forgot I had to bring correct grammar to this forum. There are many people out there doing reviews of instruments. Talking about it will not do it justice, unless you can truly play it.

  • @rymndmxwll8 Ha ha, you're cute. Have you happened to watch of the OTHER videos in this extensive series of videos... or any of my other videos? Before you imply that a person can't play a synth, you'd better do your homework.

  • play the dame thing .....shut up

  • @rymndmxwll8 I don't know what I was thinking! I'm sorry. I forgot to do it the way you wanted me to. I'll make another video for you.

Also, I believe you meant to type "damned."

  • @rymndmxwll8 find some music videos then.

  • great stuff!!

  • Does this synth have an headphones/Amplifier input?

  • Now that I think about it, how would it not, with so many jacks... But still. I might be purchasing one and I need to know what it can handle. I'm in a Synth-rock band and was wondering if this particular synth would be a good idea.

  • Which should I get, an MS-20 or MS-50? I need versatility.... I know the MS-20 is more popular and there are alot of MS-20 fanboys...... but UNBIASED opinion on which is the better all around synth... also which sounds better? and better to me equals better filter and great resonance.

  • I think some people might have a different answer, but I've owned both, and I would HIGHLY suggest the MS-50, if you can find one. The MS-20's modular aspect is really quite limiting in comparison to that of the MS-50's. The 50 is fully modular, and has more functionality. While the 50 has one oscillator and one filter, the filter (as I recall) is more pleasing than the LP on the 20.

  • @AutomaticGainsay

awesome....thank you for the info.... I really wish the 50 had the dual osc and dual resonant filter like the 20, that is my fav part about it.... DUAL RESONANCE :)

  • @AutomaticGainsay THANCKS FOR YOUR VIDEOS i have a pluging korg ms 20 and your videos tiach me useit.Thanck from argentina i don't write very wel in inglish :S sorry

  • @famadj Thanks for watching!!

  • ''WE HAVEN'T GOT ENOUGH KNOBS', y'know?'. That, sir, was brilliant.

  • Ha ha, thanks!

  • Hey man, Very informational videos... I've based all of my purchases and sounds off of you videos, I'm undecided on buying a Octave cat, Odyssey MK 1 (or 2) or a Korg MS-20, I am totally undecided.

Any benefits that outweigh the others?

  • I've never played a Cat, but I've only heard good things about them. I've always wanted an Odyssey 1! Remember that it has a 12dB per oct filter, though... some people aren't that into those! (I would take it over the others, though!) The MS-20 is great for that series-lp-hp-resonant filter deal... but the patching often only achieves things hardwired synths can do immediately!

  • Got to love this synth

  • How much does it cost ?

  • about 2000$

  • Your videos were the reason I bought my MS20. This synth brought so much happyness in my life.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you!!

  • I am glad to help!

    Thanks for watching!

  • I love your vids! just realized you did the minimoog demo which i've watch about 30 times. I knew i recognized your voice!

  • Thanks for watching! Go to my channel, and you can see all of the synths I've done demos of... you have have seen more than you think! : )

  • would you say that this is a good synth for a first-timer? i know a friend who has one, and wants to sell it to me for $50. it works perfectly, but just dirty.

  • Buy it for that price, and then get to watching my videos to learn how to use it! It'll be worth it, I promise... that is a VERY low price, even for a broken one. However, it is not an easy analog synth at all, and will require a lot of learning on your part!

  • I love this synth :D

  • What's the name of that song used in the opening? I love it

  • I wrote it for this series, and I think it has some placeholder name like "MS-20 Exclusively." I created all of the sounds (except drums) in it with the MS-20. It was recorded without a sequencer.

  • Indeed, Baphomet is something completely different: a three faced demon worshipped by the Knights Templar.

  • I have recently purchased an MS-20 and have found all your videos very helpful on getting to know the MS-20.

I do have one question though; after watching all the patch panel videos I did not see you explain how to assign the lfo frequency to the wheel for the OSC 1 & 2. Kind of like how you can set the mod wheel on the Minimoog to the LFO to get the vibrato effect.

Is this possible at all. and if so could you please let me know how. I have tried but can't seem to figure it out.

    Thanks

  • at 0:55 you say that is a "baphomet" or what??? explain please...

  • Ha ha "bafflement..." something which is very confusing

  • @AutomaticGainsay :)) much better than "baphomet" huh :))

  • Lovely presentation Mark. Thumbs up! ;) Cheers!

  • Thank you very much!

  • mark, great vids, thankyou. PLEASE,PLEASE do an ms50+sq10....thanks

  • Thank you for watching! Unfortunately, I don't possess my MS-50 anymore, and I've never owned an SQ10

  • these are super expensive on eBay...2.5k and up.

  • Time for some new videos, Marc! :)

  • Well, as a matter of fact, something is coming. : )

  • Marc is just...so awesome at explaining!!!

    I love listening to him.

  • to fast forward the bullshit start at 6:36

  • Thank you!! That guy just won't shut up.

  • lol thx

  • WE DONT HAVE ENOUGH KNOBS

  • I want 2 of them!!

  • Not really, no.

  • ahhh. yeh, i thought so, ill have to get one of these some day

  • the 2000 is REALLY different from the 20 : /

  • uahuhauhauhau..too stupid..

  • i want one!

  • How about quasi-modular?

  • It would be difficult for me to describe various aspects of the device without talking. If you want to hear someone wank on the thing, you're welcome to watch any other video. As for my nationality, it has nothing to do with it... and it's rude for you to suggest so. There is plenty of playing in any of my other videos, but you didn't know that, did you?

  • hahaha

  • Funny, all the Americans I've met have been fairly taciturn.

  • great video man, i hope to own all of these synths one day.

  • 9:00 rocks !!!!

  • he is a cock

  • He looks like drunk...

  • Comment removed

  • Very cool machine, and demo. Only you talk too long, so I suggest less talking and more tweaking!

  • wal man effect lance wala man lage ka nako nakit an s avideo//

    wa man

  • i got 1 to sell

  • Where are you and how much?

  • Comment removed

  • Is the Korg MS10 even nearly as good as this? I'd love to get one to make a few tracks for fun, but I unfortunately like most people, I don't have a couple of thousand to blow on it. They have the MS10s for about 450 on ebay and I thought that seemed like a good bet. Any advice appreciated. :)

  • hey jack,

the ms10 has just one oscilator and the filter section sounds not similar !

if you want the ms20 sound dont buy the ms10.

otherwise the ms10 sounds also very good -for me!

  • Thanks for the info. Where can you get synths like these then? The MS20 I mean.

  • sometimes on ebay

  • I thought that you needed the legacy collection software to use it (midi controlled)? or does it have its own sounds?

    MAny thanks

  • The Legacy version is a modern software controller. This device is the original, and is an analog synthesizer.

  • if you have a computer that runs on valves and tubes with no digital components then.. yes it may well be !

  • Yes, the black keys work. They're not just for show. Yes, I so wish I could play it. That'd be so great.

  • I don't like those side panels

  • Just because someone hastily slathered them with white house paint? ; )

  • How much would one cost? Does it have LFOs?

  • 2000 on ebay, i wanted one

  • Anyone who pays 2000 for a Korg MS-20 should be beaten.

  • Maybe this question is ridiculous, but, how does work the ms-20 midi controller in comparison with this one?

    Excellent vids

  • They are two completely different devices.

  • one is a ferrari, the other is a good ferrari video game.

  • thats right. I went to see how that thing works and... yeah! basically is a toy.

    Have fun!

  • toy you say? well even röyksopp uses it...

  • im sorry, i was trying to answer some other comment, not about the REAL ms 20, it was about the latest ms-20 released by korg, which is, basically, a midi controller and nothing more. That one is the toy, this one is... great

  • ah, that makes sense! before that i thought you were crazy ; )

  • Godd job! &.. -in style ;-)

  • And WOW '78-'83? It looks like it's from the early '70s or something. In '78 we had the Prophet 5 and by '83 the Yamaha DX-7had made it's debut. Fascinating machine.

  • That PWM-sweep sound was really interesting. Still waiting for the JX-3P demo :)

  • Thanks for a really entertaining introduction. Your comments on Korg's designers were brilliant. :D

I owned an MS20 for 22 years and finally sold it for a lot more than I paid for it. I don't miss it, but it's horses for courses with synths. What suits one person may not be right for another. Demo films like these are very helpful.

  • Thank you!

Yes, I have to say that I am quite ambivalent in regard to the MS-20. It's really just not the synth for what I do, or what I enjoy from synths.

  • im gettin one in month

  • When he started saying "modular" a lot I got scared.

  • UGH! I want one sooo bad...

  • Any gear you review, I watch. Powerful businessmen should grab a hold of you. Great knowledge, great character, great presentation.

  • Thank you very much! : )

  • I was looking for one on eBay, and it came with 2 results; a MS-20 controller for 250, and a MS-20 for 1200. What's the difference?

  • The controller is a USB device designed to control a softsynth which is designed to emulate the MS-20. The expensive one is the actual analog synthesizer!

  • your vids are great. i try to get one of this synths....maybe a stupid question, but is there a midi in/out on this synth??

  • Thank you!

I'm afraid you'll have to make do with operating it with your hands, unless you're going to buy a MIDI to CV converter!

  • Hi Marc!

Are you the only one to own a white ms-20??? ;)

  • No, the guy I sold it to has one, too. While it doesn't look too bad in the video, it was not a very nice paint job. I think it had been done with house paint! And no, I didn't do it! : )

  • Looks nice anyway! I'll have mine in about 2 weeks!

  • owned one of these between 1980-1995. Sold mine for way too cheap cuz I didn't know how valuable they had become. I think I sold a custom Anvil case for more than the synth years later. Duh!

One of my favorite accidental effects was to pick up the AM radio station from a nearby tower through the MS-20, then manipulate the audio through filters, envelopes and ring modulators. Can't do that on my X-Station!

  • Bought one back in 1978 for 1500 DM being the equivalent of 750 € or about 600 $. Created AMAZING sounds with it and used it as a guitar synthesizer. Sold it for 200 DM (100 € or 80$ !) a couple years later because i was exhaustively broke and had to pay a fare dodging fee. Yes, i was sick of it's design and weight, but now, uh oh, the pain...

  • I´m not confused about the design, it makes some sense. I do have more Problems with the design of a Prophet. I had a MS 20 as virtual analog device in the legacy collection and doesn´t get a great sound out of it. The only thing I like is the combination of the low an hi filter, that´s a cool feature which I never found on an other synth. I had the chance to play at a real MS 10 but, whatever it did not make fun...

Nice Vid with great background infos.

  • Yes, the MS-20 is only synth I can think of with serial self-oscillating high and low pass filters. The CS-50 has them, but they're not self-oscillating.

    Thanks for watching!

  • this synth is best described as literally "insane"

  • hi and thanx for your films. it really turns me on to play with my old dinosaurs again. ; ) watch out...
