Hmmm ... whenever I travel to Latin American countries I hear of tourists being "cheated" by locals (usually cab drivers). Normally the tourists have no idea they've been cheated until after they've spoken to someone who knows better. They are, however, far less likely to run into trouble if they speak the language.
