What I find VERY emotional is the fact that the UK seems to feel just as sorry as Americans do. Shows that we really are still one. In some ways. Nice to see allies together.
i think the whole civilized world, at least europe feels just as sorry, what really upset me is that some muslims in my country (the Netherlands) actually went outside to celebrate, dont want to be racist or something. but it's just terrible
I, still to this day, consider this one of the beautiful and moving pieces of music ever written. If someone were ask me what is the most ethereal and penetrating pieces of music I have ever heard, this would be it. Samuel Barber, Thank You.......
I, still to this day, consider this one of the beautiful and moving pieces of music ever written. If someone were ask me what is the most ethereal and penetrating pieces of music I have ever heard, this would be it. Samuel Barber, Thank You.......
At the time this was broadcast, the audience were asked not to applaud afterwards, but they did anyway. It was also commented that if there's a disaster in Britain then we tend to play "Nimrod" from the Enigma Variations and if there's a disaster in the USA then they play Barber's Adagio.
Either way, this and Albinoni's Adagio are both great.
Speaking as someone who like his guitars to wail, likes his drums to thud on 2 and 4 and thinks everything should be based on a 3-chord blues progression all I can say is this is breathtaking! If there's a piece which conveys more of a sense of loss and yearning I'd like never to have to hear it for fear it should destroy me....
Separate from the beauty of the peice was the beauty of the conductor's expression. you could tell that he was truly moved by the playing of this peice.
I remember hear this song long time a go watching the movie Platoon, later in 2000 or 2001 I guess maybe was Tiesto but that doesn't mater it was nice to hear it again but in electronic music.

@anewell41 It was used for JFK's funeral, and was unbearable on that 1963 day. I remember it well,. Yes, to use it for the victims of 9/11- omg, it would have torn our heats out.
@anewell41 LOL- I don't think this Adagio is actually designed to make us sad- but it is profoundly moving and therefore appropriate for funerals. The fact that it induces a mood is proof of its power. Actually, I find hip hop and rap far more depressing lol
Is it possible to make a compliment without detracting the other?! You cannot compare this version with Tiësto's because they are different styles for different purposes...and the DJ made a great job spreading the song to ppl that otherwise wouldn't even experienced this melody ever!
I don't know why I listened to this song tonight, but I know that I needed it. A long time favorite of my youth, popularized by a movie called Platoon. I will walk away from this more at peace then I could ever understand. Thank you Samuel Barber.
@everydaywarriors Unsure why you don;t have almost 1.9 million thumbs up. When he walks off i walked with him, just beautiful.Sometimes there is nothing to be said but just the silence.

@TKMSeznam12 i think tiestos version is quite nice. of course it will never match the beauty of an orchestra but i think he pioneered a very cool mixture of electronic and classical music.
@TKMSeznam12 recording with my toaster has better quality than this, the tiesto one is a lot better quality wise, but i personally like this one better
@hilectro Ha, it's not "hating". Tiesto's version is a complete bastardization. It's not like 5fdp remaking "Bad Company", which still sounds the same - Tiesto took it and completely disregarded the sanctity of a beautiful piece of musical artwork. And I am mostly commenting on the fact that 15 million people have viewed the Tiesto version, but only 1 million have viewed this one. The character of this world is falling rapidly.
@vaendryl Sadness in itself can hold more emotions. Tiesto, made a nice variation to it, but i cant show a lot of respect for it. As far as i can hear Tiesto just got the basic melody and put some bass underneath it woww impressive. Try composing a piece instead of borrowing.

@lex588467 Maybe if you could string together a correct sentence I'd lend your messages some credence. As for the dumbass comment, I can not even be sure you are not referring to yourself.
am showing my signs of respect to everyone who has lost someone they loved........solstice and christmas is a sad time.......and this was done in respect of all those people who died in the 911 twin tower tragedy......SAMUEL BARBER MUST HAVE GONE THROUGH SOME SAD TIMES TO HAVE COMPOSED THIS PIECE.....TELL ME OF A SADDER TUNE THAN THIS........RAW EMOTION..........R.I.P.MUM AND MORE RECENT OUR GOOD FRIEND STEVE GLADWYN FROM BASILDON IN ESSEX, OUR BROTHER AND GOOD FRIEND
Heard this for the first time many years past in an old computer game by Sierra called Homeworld. It's been my favorite song ever since. I don't mind the Tiesto remix, I'll listen to it on some playlists, but it can't hold a candle to the real thing.
@barklight85 Think I heard adagio sometime earlier, but only bits and pieces. Homeworld was the first time I heard it in a "proper" setting. Also happened upon the remix after that :)
@barklight85 It's amazing what modern media exposes us to, isn't it? Others first heard it in Platoon. It was such a small piece of those products--great games and films though they may be--but a hundred years from now people will still revere this song, when the rest of our media culture is long forgotten. Some things last. This will last.
anyone who appreciates the "tiesto" remix of this song more than the original has no concept of what music is and will likely fester in a hole for the duration of their pitiful existence. "adz1991xx" your only semi-legitimate excuse would be that you are a tone deaf latino who loves anything that sounds spanish (i.e Tiesto)
La primera vez que la escuche fue en la película Platoon y desde entonces siempre que tengo algo de tiempo me paro a escucharla, sublime la dirección de Samuel Barber.
81 people should go back to 50 cent, rihanna and Bieber. I heard this piece live in a small fortress church the other thay, and I have never been as moved by any piece of music. I recommend everyone and anyone to see this performed live. Digital technology simply can't catch the beauty.
Murder shouldn't have a nice soundtrack. They wont come back for this. Sort out the terrorists, put them in their graves then this wont happen again.

@lex588467 Maybe if you could string together a correct sentence I'd lend your messages some credence. As for the dumbass comment, I can not even be sure you are not referring to yourself.
