    I also think the functioning of the market itself makes social choices appear inevitable at the microeconomic level. We _must_ complete this list of tasks before this deadline, or we'll lose money or employment. The tasks and the deadline are the contingent outcomes of a social process of production, but the only choice we see is the one between obedience and annihilation.

  • To elaborate, tasks and deadlines depend on what competitors are doing, how secure workers are in the job market, the needs and preferences of clients, and even such vague notions as reputation. What appears absolutely crucial today can easily vanish with a change in any of these factors.
