  • her lips are so full and lucious. she's just beautiful.

  • The only memory of my father are his phyllis hyman records, he left us but took those albums. she will always be the best.

  • Is so sad that i have watched many Phyllis Hyman interviews and on every single one she always talk about how lonely she was and that she wanted a relationship with a man. She always said that men never approached her and i think that really hurt her feelings,She just wanted to be loved like everyone else! I sure hate shes gone, such a beautiful soul

  • lmao. Them shoulder pads are so dayum distracting!! Why did they think that was a good look in the 80's and 90's? It looks absurd. But, Phillis was so talented. Rest sista.

  • Them gotta be the biggest shoulder pads I have ever seen.

  • CLASSY.

  • Beautiful lips!

  • the best of all time

  • She is beautiful!!!!!! RIP Phyllis

  • She was a very beautiful person...May God Bless her spirit!

  • She is an Awsome Woman with Dynamic style of singing that today singer's can't touch with a tourch. No one can re-make her songs like she could. I followed her every time she came to New York/New Jersey.

  • She is an Awsome Woman with Dynamic that today singer can't touch with a tourch...you never hear anyone being able to re-make one of her song like she could...I love her...I followed her every time she came to New York/New Jersey....

  • This sophisticated lady has charm, intelligence, and style that is a pretty rare quality -it's something to treasure, along with the great, Phyllis Hyman.

  • The signs of the time before the Son of Man returns. Earthquakes, (Japan, Chile, China, etc.), tsunamis, terrorism, Illuminati control of the world and wars, pestilence,

chip implants, alien abductions, chemical trails, rip in ozone layer, famine, must I

    go on?

  • I just watched the "Unsung" episode on Phyllis and they did a phenomenal job, I have always felt her soul through her music. She is truly missed.

  • she was very close with the group "The Whispers" and they had dedicated a song to her. she was so beautiful and for that time period she was a sharp dresser. so sad that she passed. everyone is hurting inside and just want to be loved and not judged. you can feel from this interview a sense of loneliness and sadness coming from her.

  • Her eyes...says SO much. Not many people have eyes like that. So wide and its something in her eyes thats saying SOMETHING. I just dont know what exactly...man.. .

  • @naiveaddictionz What you see orread in her eyes is pure pain:-( As if to say, "I am really hurting..some one, please help me":-( So sad!!!!

  • I dont care if its One person...who the hell would dislike this video? The ones who murdered her? hmmmmm...RIP beautiful woman Phyllis Hyman.

  • im saddened by her passing she was so talented and pretty!

  • she was so pretty god i wish she was still here

  • Gone to soon

  • I love the colors she is wearing in this video!

  • Reflecting back she was beautiful. It is really sad she was so troubled in her life. RIP,Phyllis we still love and think about you.

  • Because male groupies would get bounced so quick there head would spin.

  • White women would kill for those luscious full lips. So so beautiful. What is loss.

  • Why do her eyes open like that ?

  • @mizzhelloo

I have been wondering the same thing... it seemed to have gotten

worse once she became older maybe it is due to the medication she

    was taking....

  • @mizzhelloo

I have been wondering the same thing... it seemed to have gotten

worse once she became older maybe it is due to the medication she

was taking.... it heart me when she said she didn't have a love life so

sad I will her life was better for her

  • Doesn't she look like Jasmine Sulivan? Or I should say Jasmine Sulivan looks like her.

  • @MsLafaye100 No, you are absolutely right. Jasmine Sullivan looks just like Phyllis. They should consider her to play Phyllis in a film one day.

  • i luv her big full lips

    what a beautifal woman

  • I had the privilige to met Phyliss Hyman, when she came to Baltimore. My sister was working down at a Club Called the Fish Market, She was eating at the Diner portion with her sisters, and I went to ask for her autograph, Well she was so real about life, that she asked me to join them at the table, After that experience, she became a real person to me. I am so sorry that she gave up her fight so very early. So many good things was in this beautiful person, but now she is a resting angel.

  • @Kayland053

do you or anyone else have Phyllis Hyman's book that you would like

to sell? Amazon has it for a crazy price but I would love to read this book

    so bad!

  • I had the privilige to met Phyliss Hyman, when she came to Baltimore. My sister was working down at a Club Called the Fish Market, She was eating at the Dinner portion with her sisters, and I went to ask for her autograph, Well she was so real and warm, that she asked me to join them at the table, After that experience, she became a real person to me. I am so sorry that she gave up her fight so very early. So many good things was in this beautiful person, but now she is a resting angel.

  • She would have been my mom's age if she lived. 61 years old.

  • The first time I saw Phyllis Hyman I was going to school at the University of Miami and one day this tall, beautiful, black goddess was walking through the campus...she made people stop in their tracks, the way she carried herself, etc. It's so tragic she died so young. Such a talent.

  • Phyllis Hyman was an magnificent specimen of womanhood. Not only was she absolutely talented, she is a very intelligent woman. I love that. I am heartbroken that this precious woman reportedly committed suicide. She was too blessed to be stressed like that. Rest in peace my precious Phyllis!!!!!. I love you so.

  • Her fashion was well put together, plus look at those nails and bracelets!

  • Do you think it would be a good idea to do a play about Phyllis Hyman's life?

  • She such a professional and lady!

  • Jill Scott type thick round juicy lipped piece of vet coochie. I want her.

  • @kdpflanders1 Just ignorant

  • @kmaur21 I think my comments are quite accurate and factual. She's was beautiful and sexy.

  • @kdpflanders1 Phyllis Hyman is gorgeous women but she is a musical legend. She should be respected for her artistry and elegance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @kdpflanders1 that's just gross. Show some respect.

  • I wish she could have gotten help for all her problems. She was a great talent with her own style. It's so sad she's not here singing for us anymore. It makes me want to cry.

  • Phyllis Hyman is way too underrated. A movie about her life would be wonderful, I think.

  • @Classyjazzlady i agree, there should be a biopic about her life

  • @Classyjazzlady i totally agree. totally.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE PHYLLIS. But how come the interviewer is so robotic?

  • Here is the veritable definition of Goddess!

  • There's something very mysterious and captivating about her eyes.. I can't put my finger on it! She was such a unique, mysterious and beautiful woman!

  • @Jeffrizel1986 TRUE

  • Just goes to show you that Beauty isn't everything.. Her pain was real.. I miss her and all her beautiful sophisticated glory! May she rest in Paradise!!..

  • i will always love phyllis and her shoulder pads. that right one is sitting real high. i loves it myself! miss you phyll!!

  • Tomorrow June 30, 2010 is the 15 year anniversary of Phyllis' death...and I still wish that I would have been her friend because I could have saved her by turning her on to Jesus. I miss you Phyllis.

  • I love the way she talks...

  • Simply put, she was One of a Kind. We miss her dearly.

  • I LOVE how articulate she is. You don't see intelligent, articulate artists like this anymore. Beyonce can barely string a sentence together :(

  • @MiamiPush2theLimit HIGH FIVE Miami...amn I could say that all day, she is sooo overrated. Ms. Hyman is the classiet woman I've ever seen on screen. I hate she was not appreciated in her lifetime!

  • @MiamiPush2theLimit Oh shut up Beyonce can, no need to belittle beyonce to make another fellow black strong woman look good. You are an idiot.

  • @HearWithoutPrejudice Go watch any Beyonce interview. She is an excellent entertainer, but a horrible speaker.

  • @HearWithoutPrejudice I think what this person is trying to relate is how some singers today are not truly the best representation for integrity and class. There is a 'trashy' element about some of these young singers that is somewhat disappointing. What Phyllis represents is the elegant, sophistication that Black entertainers strove for

but no longer. It would be nice to see some class return to the spotlight.

  • @lavernemariebutler & what I am saying is class with black female entertainers. It's all a matter of individuality & one expressing their culture (i.e Rihanna) in the way they see fit, to limit ones ability of choice & ridicule makes us inherent slaves for Madonna is not ridiculed, neither is legs spread lady gaga(born this way) whites do not comment on such expressions. Beyonce handles herself always with class but will be the first to be bashed by those with selective sight

  • @lavernemariebutler I agree that we ought to see more class, style, grace, educated & humility within women but that is what I am saying we need to focus on,WOMEN not just black women for this decline in class doesn't fall at the feet of black women, there are white women who fall short on that & various other PEOPLE so it is beyond culture & race. Why do we always say how women should be yet there's a lack of men especially in the media that fall short in class, grace & education

  • @MiamiPush2theLimit she is truly from a different class . u r right

  • @MiamiPush2theLimit Doesn't matter she is a light skin queen deal with it articulate or not Know your place! Phyllis has just has the package that we were born with and chooses to use it! You dark girls need to learn from the masters! And watch what you say we run you!

  • @brown887842 keep your color complexes to yourself.

  • @MiamiPush2theLimit u choppin on beyonce,,,but i get it tho....i wish beyonce music was more like the music bac then...but its all good :)

  • @MiamiPush2theLimit i like how everyone's getting upset over your comment but it's true. beyonce is pretty and can sing but that's where it ends.

  • 2:29 what was that?

  • @TheHeyyyou rudeness on the part of the interviewer and her crew. They interrupted the interview and no one said 'excuse me' or ' sorry for that interuption"

  • Comment removed

  • she looked so sad when she said she did not have romance. THe interviewer did a terrible job at that moment. There shouldn't had been the awkward silence

  • Phyllis Hyman was beautiful, elegant, and classy. I love a woman with a sense of beauty and style. She can really sing. I love her voice. I would love to date a woman like that.

  • Phyllis's lack of a love relationship overshadowed everything else, what she didnt have, she wanted the most and somehow decided that she didnt want to live without it . . . the love of a man. She is so beautiful, I wonder why a man couldn't see beyond her exterior beauty and recognize her inner beauty. Unless she set her standards extremely high or placed wide boundaries unattainable.

  • This is so sad to watch. I can feel her lonliness. Me and Phyllis relate so much....RIP

  • @Iliketosee08 that's when you're nearly COMPELLED to let go! Solo Sharp with no environmental affinity-for amaterialist compassionate humans-is a form of hell....;-() 'Wish also, tho' that she had stayed....

  • wow didnt know she made a track with Groover

  • Phyllis was unlike any other recording artist in history. Her sense of fashion was unparallelled. U.S. radio just didn't play her songs and that must have frustrated her. Black radio was more receptive but she never enjoyed the crossover success of Diana Ross and Roberta Flack enjoyed. She addresses the "rap" music and the destruction that she knew it was causing and the crime and abuse that it celebrates. Smart and intuitive lady. Miss you so much Phyllis !!

  • She spoke so eloquently, and I believe she represented the black community well. I agree with KomposerMD, this interview shed light on many important issues going on at the time. She was truly stunning.

  • You can see the sadness and pain in her eyes...its very on the surface yet she is very open and honest. She deserved to have much more success than I think she got ...but having her videos here on youtube is a great way to honor her Legacy and memeory ..love you Phyllis...xo

  • @PeaceFan1 Very sad that she took her own life. She was a great talent and a very intelligent lady gone but never forgotten. RIP

  • @PeaceFan1 Yes you can see the pain in her eyes and you can see that she was lonely a lady as beautiful intelligent and famous and she was you would think she had everything RIP

  • The interviewer sounds so "commercial". If that were me i would be so excited to be interviewing her,I would have talked 2 her as if we were BFF's

  • She was so beautiful and classy. I loved her fashion.

  • she wears nice earrings!!!

  • Don't judge her for her escape, love her for her music, her spirit, her conviction to not just go along to get along and to pour herself into her performancez....Salut to a Strong Queen who weathered the storm for her appointed time. Hetep Het Auset <3

  • Sometimes when we are alone in our condemnations of occurrences which brings displeasure or strong emotional battles we can be a danger to ourselves, these are times we want to be alone, but we really need someone to be there as well. On the surface, things are easy, we just turn on the charm, put on the face naturally; but the depths are as deep as the ocean and with intense passion the waters can be quite turbulent.

  • Passionate people live and love passionately and the fiyah burns pure and hot; it will either consume or refine.

  • i just love her period, her highs and her lows; i know them both....depression is very complex and it does not make a statement about one's faith; sometimes the soul grows weary and weak - "Jesus" knowing what was about to happened went to the mountain top and prayed fervently 3 times, asking for the strength to bear the hand he knew was in play.

  • What an interesting interview! Phyllis Hyman addresses a number of issues - her current recording, working with other musicians, such as, Grover Washington, Jr, her loyal audience, the nature of the music business, a commentary on rap, relationships and her personality. She was a great and highly intelligent artist. Being a musician, she continues to inspire me.

Does anyone know the names of the broadway shows she would have starred in?

  • People just don't realize how serious Mental Illness is. It's a hidden disease.

  • You can tell she was dealing with some emotional issues just by how somber she was in every interview. She's mellow, but also, somber.... She was beautiful and it is unfortunate that she took her own life, but she obviously left a legacy. no one knows what she was dealing with but her and God and the only judgment of her life that matters is that of her God. Period. If you don't have a heaven or hell to put her in, you have no authority on the matter.

  • @yoannis27...before u set yourself up as the ultimate judge for Phyllis, what makes u so damn sure that you'll make it 2 Heaven? Going to church every sunday & reading the bible doesnt exactly ensure a guaranteed ticket in2 God's kingdom...To insist that some1 is in hell is the same as condeming and only God has the power 2 do that. If u condemn some1 else, then u condemn urself...u may wanna think b4 u speak and find out the FACTS instead of relying on a text written by man, not God

  • She put on a good front for the cameras. She was dealing with a lot of internal issues and she was feeling a lot of pain.

Did you notice how her eyes changed when she answered the question about not being romatically involved?

  • Thats true, but remember her psychological lense was a bit warped. She was bi-polar. She couldnt control those mood swings, she had no reliistic coping program for the isolation and lonliness. Up and down, up and down. Bipolar condition without successful treatment is pure hell. She went for the immediacy to shut down the pain, but that backfired. It sad, we didnt know more about the illness back then and how to recognize the symptoms. She had a real bad "low"

  • its hard to accept that this beautiful of a woman, with so much to live for still, took her own life. i hope, truly, truly hope that GOD may have forgiven her, considering what she was going through and dealing with on this Earth emotionally, dont we all. i hope so, for her soul's sake.

  • @gjay700 Amen !! she was battling something inside that was farr greater than what she alone could help. im certain God is holding her in his presence now, she deserves nothing less.

  • @yoannis27 who are u too judge? the truth is in all actuality God has the right to do whatever he wants he couldve very well excepted Phyliss she was SICK for God's sake!!! Bipolar disorder is a DISEASE that just like any other psychological disorder one cannnot control because of the chemical imbalance the brain excretes! And F.Y.I The bible teaches heaven through being saved and born again, not through works or good and bad deeds,

  • @yoannis27 thats like saying if u die in a plane crash, and accidently curse while the plane is going down regardless of u having a relationship with christ yu go to hell cuhz udidnt repent. and who is we?

  • @yoannis27 your narrow mindedness is the very reason why so many have converted to atheism!

  • what makes you so sure that's she's "cooking up regrets with lucifer" as u say?! It sounds like you are judging without knowing all of the facts...whether she's in heaven or hell is not for u to decide and if she decided that it was her time to go, then that's her business. God is love and compassion and he understood her struggle...if he can forgive Judas, then he certainly has no problem with Phyllis;there's nothing 2 forgive. u dont know what happens beyond the physical realm, so shut up!!

  • @yoannis27 People like YOU really get on my damn nerves! always judging someone, ALWAYS bringing religion into everything to judge someone. I can't stand people like you.

  • she reminds me of someone i cant remember who but shes so beautiful and classy. her voice is nice too very smooth and sophisticated

  • I never realised how pretty this woman was she was absolutely gorgeous

  • She was absolutel adorable. So classy and elegant. R.I.P

  • Phyllis!!! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! My mom misses you. She partied with you and Sheila E back in the day. She loved you. I remember her talking about you the next morning and I was 6 or 7 years old... RIP

    You are loved.

  • Some guys are intimidated by tall women. I am 6'3", personally and I happen to like tall women. I never really looked at how sexy she was upclose, those lips, skin tone, EYES. I cant believe, cant believe nobody was asking her out. I think that had a lot to do with her publicly saying she was lonely.

  • SHe had lots of lovers...she wasn't alone in the sense of having no one around. She was emotionally unstable and an addict which would in turn make it diffiicult to sustain a realtionship. I know many women like this "beautiful" and very rarely not in a relationship but lonely becuase they are unhappy inside.

    She had an amazing talent

  • @mrhowardb I agree..i'm six feet and many men are intimidated and some of us are strong willed so that is hard for us

  • She was very lonely. Could you imagine being that talented and having hundreds of thousands of people love you as an entertainer, but not having someone to love you unconditionally? At 5:07, she brings it up in her answer and it's quickly ignored. That's what makes lonely tough...sometimes people don't let you talk about it and instead of hearing it and trying to help, they feel uncomfortable and ignore it. Now, it's too late for what could have been. There's only what was.

  • As an entertainer I can truly relate. I feel her. in every way

  • Yes, a lot of entertainers can relate. How do you break that?

  • Now that's a diva if there is one. Im not sayin names but these new broadz are a joke!

  • Phyllis Hyman singing and her voice was an another level , so much better than this fake made up artises of this days who they cant sing for shit..

  • That is one sexy ass woman, them fuckin eyes, and them lips,oh shit what would you do with her.And this baby could'nt find a decent man.But she could get any man.

  • Her story is so sad. I'm of africian decent but so many us feel like mental disorders can't happen to us. I have a problem with depression, but when I tried to explain it to my peers they look at me like I'm strange. A movie should be done about Phyllis and Donny; it would really help people.

  • i hope ur feeling better now. xx

  • everyone keeps saying jazmin sullivan i think chrisette michelle has that tone and look more than jazz. They all are great singers but chrisette should play her.Check out some of chrisette's new videos and you will see what i am talking about.

  • Chrisette channels the energy and spirit of Phyllis. She brings that same passion to a lyric. CM definitely is one to watch. Look for my upcoming video offering that affirms your thoughts.

  • @akaziaj yes I see what u mean... Chrisette has that thing like Phyllis

  • Thanks. I know there are those that would disagree. But she's got that "thing" is the best way to describe it . CM will have great success. She stands on the shoulders of those who came before. (Billie, Sarah, Ella, Nina and of course Phyllis.

CM seems to be true to the game. Of course she got more accolades for the her first CD which was much more pop, than Epiphany. To me it's the real truth and displays her vocal and musical genius.

  • yea, well, if Phyllis was dumped for Whitney then I'm mad at Clive Davis, at least he is trying to help Whitney, but Phyllis was incredible, her voice is mesmerizing and timeless. She reaches emotional levels not many singers can reach. I wish he could have helped Phyllis...He seems like a nice man so I bet he wishes he could have helped her more too.I just wonder if her problem was so severe her loneliness so profound that she just could not take it. I think so, may she rest In Peace....

  • She has GREAT music.

  • jazmine sullivan should play her in a movie

  • yes i agree that jazmin sullivan should play her. i think there is a little resemblance

  • SHE WAS SO FINE!!

  • She was a singers' singer.

  • She needed to take her meds but she wouldn't. She would self-medicate with food, drugs & alcohol. She was never alone; she had plenty of men & one woman in her life.

Read the "Strenght of A Woman; The Phyllis Hyman Story" by Jason A Michael..

  • Her VOICE cuts right to the soul --deep inside of you -- ur a rock if you can't feeeel

her feelings--much love from cookie--committed your soul on my birthday june 30--so every birthday truly ponder ms. hyman--full support from me and my lover--300% the GREATEST voice i've ever ever listened to--peace

  • One beautiful woman...What a loss..so sad that she had such issues of self esteem..

  • :) true but she looks disturbed

  • hell yea she do..watch her eyes.they get wide every once in a while

  • miss you Phyllis....Eric too. Thanks for the lessons and the music.

  • People going around hurting people by lying cheating - all adds to emotional distress as well - you never know how people will react cut the crap

  • I still miss her.

  • You are a sad person with clearly some deficiencies that we won't discuss. A real dummy. Bless your heart.

You should check your mental health.

  • Sending you light and love.

  • ha man I 100% agree, I just never wanted to say it cause like you got 4 thumbs down I know people wouldn't wanna understand haha

  • fuck you I would cut your ass you damn butt sniffer go suck YOUR TOUGE AS A WIWI YOU FUCKEN EMO SNIFFER

  • over the internet? really?

    i'm flattered.....

can we set up a time and day now or do i have to wait?

  • Its so weird seeing someone like Phillis here looking so well, talking and breathing that you know took their own life ..... how bad must it have been for this inteligent beautiful woman to do that? .... i cant imagine, such a shame and a loss

  • RIP Phyl. :)

  • I'm looking for the Donnie Simpson interviews with PH. Anybody got anything?

  • Comment removed

  • Me too but she was on there twice I believe the one I remember Patti Labelle came in during the interview with flowers or maybe it was the other way around I wish I could get my hands on a copy it used to be on here a few years back! : (

  • i meant to say civilized, but jux55 is still a bitch, i will fight for this woman even though i never met her, she's brought me alot of happiness through her music and alot of knowledge through her life story, phyllis fans dnt forget to say happy birthday on july 6th

  • Loved her analysis of the diversity in rap music and her understanding of the social, political and power implications of rap.

She was indeed a woman ahead of her time. In 1991most folk in her age group were still hatin' on rap music. GO "ICE PHIL" LOL.

  • when did she pass and how

  • Phyllis committed suicide on june 30, 1995 with sedatives. She suffered from bipolar disorder. Gone, but never forgotten. Lovely lady is at peace now.

  • 1995 o/d suicide on sleeping pills and vodka, very talented but she tells of her intense loneliness

  • Very,Very beautiful black woman R.I.P.

  • amazing woman...

  • I look at Phyllis, and think if only she had held on...If only she was still with us. She had so much. RIP.

  • Many ignore that PH was an extremely intelligent woman with a diverse and complex world view about life and humanity.

So diverse in that she could get down, dirty and raw, then flip the script and be very intellectual. She had a thing for current events, especially has it related to AAfm people. The youngin's could take a page from her book about the need to present diverse sides depending on the contextual reality.

    WOW!

  • I agree

  • LOL!!!! That interviewer was a piece of work, boy!!!

  • She sucked? r u fuckin serious, u dumb ass idiot, i hate stupid bitches who go on videos of ppl they dnt like just to express their stupid ass opinions. she was smart and gorgeous and expressed and explained herself very well, this video is for phyllis fans, not for u jux55, if u didnt have anything nice to say then leave this video quietly like a civilizes fuckin human bein.
