I just got my hands on a copy of HBR 498 yesterday. The label is slightly different - yours may be a DJ copy - I've never seen "Plug Side" on a consumer record (including mine). Also, over the BMI-2:49 it says Melody Trails, Inc. and under the title it gives songwriter credits: (Bourke-Drew-McKenna-Sheehan-Lynch). What is the B side of your copies? Mine has The Gallant Fourty Twa'
This 45 was in my grandmother's collection, which I inherited. She was just a lady who bought songs that she liked, at the department store. This US pressing was bought in Canada, where Arc had their own disc out at the same time. I have no idea how a US promo ended up in consumer stock in Canada. All known copies have the same B-side.
The Abbey Tavern Singers also had an album on the VIP label (Motown subsidiary) that featured an alternate take of this song. But the original Arc/HBR single is the definitive classic! And I definitely concur that the flip side, The Gallany Forty Twa is also worthy of a post. It would be great if a clip of the band doing this song live was found and posted!
I remember the Carling commercials and remember my mom getting this single. The flip side ("The Gallant Forty Twa") is great, too. Any chances of posting it?
i grew up listening to the abby tavern singers. my dad from bonmahon, co. waterford and my mother from swanlinbar, co. cavan. rip my dear father...but he would prefer to hear joe cooley!
wow this was my first record i eever had, i new i was getting a record player for xmas, but i had no records, so i stole this one from a record bar in Dartmouth nova scotia i was 13 at the time, my father made me bring it back, and face the music[lol] anyway the manager made me take out a bunch of garbage then gave me the record.
Thank you for this. Brought back very happy memories of our honeymoon in Ireland in 1968 when we went to the Abbey Tavern and heard this song.I remember they were selling the record which we bought.
I remember the Pig and Whistle too. Interesting how certain songs shot up the charts that you would never imagine would, like Amazing Grace by the Royal Scots Dragoons or whatever they were called.
I well remember this song. Never thought I would ever hear it again. I don't know if you remember The Pig & Whistle Show, but I think they may have may a guest appearance there.
Sure, I remember the show. It started up in 1967, and the ATS would have been right at home. They did come to Canada, and it's possible that they appeared, but impossible to trace. I just read that CTV wiped every single episode of that program except for two shows.
The Carlton Showband (P&W's house band) cut a version of "Off To Dublin" that was on the charts as the same time as this one, under the name of "Merry Plowboy."
@mojofilter02 The Abbet Tavern singers got a gold disc in Canada for this record. They visited Canada twice, first time in 1967/68 and appesred at the Royal York in Toronto. Tey visited again a few years later, The abey Tavern itself is still going strong although the group members have changed - but that was always the way - it was the resident group and the member left and new members came in from time to time. I spent a few years there myself!
Someday I hope they have this on iTunes! I loved the whole album!

This song and Gallant Forty-Twa are the first two Irish songs I remember as a kid. I pilfered the 45rpm from my older sister.

You have excellent write-ups with these, and that's only the 3rd HB disc I've seen in my life, great material mojo.

Thanks! What were the other two HBR records you've seen? Who else did they sign? Ann Margrock? Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm?
