I'm an American, born 1969. When I was growing up most boys played rough games like cowboys and indians and cops and roobers. we watched scary movies. lots of kids drew scary pics like this one. we played with toy guns, knives, etc. and the majority of us turned out fine.

I bet someone in his home watches horror movies and he has become accustomed to the visual images. This is one of the reasons that they put a rating on movies before we buy them. He obviously saw Halloween as he had written some stuff about it with the drawing, but that doesn't mean the film influenced him to murder. I was teaching Russian kids aged 7-9 in 2007 and they all drew massacres, blood and guts all the time. Their favourite computer game was Grand Theft Auto though.

Child porn, as horrifying and sickening as it is, is not even vaguely in the same ball park as murder, so I'm not sure what conclusions we can draw re: Venables' rehabilitation from that.
@HereInTheDarkness Thompson is living a normal life by all accounts without any real problems, though hes under an assumed name right now. I think he went along with venables out of fear. Venables was tested and found to be a psychopath, he'll probably spend most of the rest of his life in and out of jail.
@TheCaptainLulz , well, Thompson seemed to have no remorse, he was the instigator (even the detectives agreed with this), he in fact bullied Venables at school at times. He was leader, Venables was the follower, as was established at school. Thompson also didn't admit to killing James until he was in therapy while in juvenile detention. Venables was the one who confessed and continually expressed remorse.
@HereInTheDarkness I remember this case vividly. They both stated they did not want to be released from jail. Maybe this was the way that one got back in. I cannot understand for the life of me two children so young capable of murdering a poor, little 2 yr old. Not just straight out murder, torture before they killed him.
@empressofthefrench , it does seem like Venables was looking for an excuse to go back - he began revealing his true identity to people like he wanted to be found out and possibly killed. I think he cracked under the pressure and is probably still haunted by what he did, whereas Thompson perhaps never did feel remorse (it took a few years for him to admit his part in killing James). Thompson was also considered by the parole board to be psychopathic.
@HereInTheDarkness and the other is "fine", last I heard he was giving talks about rehabilitation to young offenders. He's done his time, he's admitted what he did, has shown remorse for it and atleast now he's doing some good. Just because Venables wasn't "cured", doesn't mean rehabilitation isn't a great idea or that it doesn't work in most cases.

even as a former law student i am unable to stand this case with impartiality. this murder was grisly in the darkest sense. killing a grown up has some room for the witness to reason with, but to kill a toddler in such a fashion leaves no room for rehab.

it's NOT "pretty simple", nor is the area of ethics in general. Keeping them in prison for life is probably a lot more expensive than comprehencive and good rehabilitation in a humane manner, so your cost complaint is a moot point. Further more, if you can't see someones basic right to a life because you have to rationalize as to deal with the facts of their crime, then i pitty you, and i'm glad you're not a judge, they can't view things in black and white as little girls do

I'm an American, born 1969. When I was growing up most boys played rough games like cowboys and indians and cops and roobers. we watched scary movies. lots of kids drew scary pics like this one. we played with toy guns, knives, etc. and the majority of us turned out fine.

Sure they can influence them but I think their has to be some serious problems with the child in the first place.

@86Stooy The intention of this video is not to blame any film for what happened. It is simply documenting the drawing that Venables did before the murder. He obviously saw Halloween as he had written some stuff about it with the drawing, but that doesn't mean the film influenced him to murder. It's just interesting to some people to view the drawing done by a child who went onto kill.

Wauw - After reading these comments i realize that not so many of you believe in a greater God, sadly! I Understand that is it easy to loss faith when such thing happens in these manors. No sympathy from me for this man - just saying that most of you saying that he deserve to die - are no better then this sick kid whom toke another souls life. I hate how now they are grown up they are allowed to roam free with new identities& new lives, as if nothing has happened. They have basically got away with it; the life they led in the juvenile detainment unit was luxury - playstations, the lot! Everyone has their human rights, but they took a life and they should lose ANY rights to privacy or protection. The inhumane and barbaric fashion in which they treated poor James was utterly horrific. 10 years old or not, they know right from wrong.

I was teaching Russian kids aged 7-9 in 2007 and they all drew massacres, blood and guts all the time. Their favourite computer game was Grand Theft Auto though.

both of them came from abusive environments. I feel bad for them in a way. I mean, I know they became murdering psychopaths but in my opinion those people are not born, but created. I feel bad for the children they were BEFORE they were turned into psychopaths.

ok, i'm not from the UK, so.. i have no first hand experience of the "mood" of people surrounding this case and the emotional biases festering among those who want these young adults to be publically embowled ^^. having said that.. i think it's a little bit depressing how so many can't seem to separate the concept of justice from vengeance, one guy says "they need more severe punishment not rehabilitation". and the next guy goes: "how do we know they wont reoffend?".... errm. by rehabilitating?

Child porn, as horrifying and sickening as it is, is not even vaguely in the same ball park as murder, so I'm not sure what conclusions we can draw re: Venables' rehabilitation from that.

@HereInTheDarkness Thompson is living a normal life by all accounts without any real problems, though hes under an assumed name right now. I think he went along with venables out of fear. Venables was tested and found to be a psychopath, he'll probably spend most of the rest of his life in and out of jail.

@TheCaptainLulz , well, Thompson seemed to have no remorse, he was the instigator (even the detectives agreed with this), he in fact bullied Venables at school at times. He was leader, Venables was the follower, as was established at school. Thompson also didn't admit to killing James until he was in therapy while in juvenile detention. Venables was the one who confessed and continually expressed remorse.

@HereInTheDarkness I remember this case vividly. They both stated they did not want to be released from jail. Maybe this was the way that one got back in. I cannot understand for the life of me two children so young capable of murdering a poor, little 2 yr old. Not just straight out murder, torture before they killed him.

@empressofthefrench , it does seem like Venables was looking for an excuse to go back - he began revealing his true identity to people like he wanted to be found out and possibly killed. I think he cracked under the pressure and is probably still haunted by what he did, whereas Thompson perhaps never did feel remorse (it took a few years for him to admit his part in killing James). Thompson was also considered by the parole board to be psychopathic.

@HereInTheDarkness and the other is "fine", last I heard he was giving talks about rehabilitation to young offenders. He's done his time, he's admitted what he did, has shown remorse for it and atleast now he's doing some good. Just because Venables wasn't "cured", doesn't mean rehabilitation isn't a great idea or that it doesn't work in most cases.

@Djsouthpaw1987 - you're just wrong. i lived this, i saw the video, i heard the police tapes, i read the depositions. they smashed his head in with a brick, threw paint on him, laid his body on a train track. rehab???
even as a former law student i am unable to stand this case with impartiality. this murder was grisly in the darkest sense. killing a grown up has some room for the witness to reason with, but to kill a toddler in such a fashion leaves no room for rehab.

Venables had several scuffles with the law (relocating closer to the Bulger murder site, public drunkeness) before being rearrested for having loads of CHILD PORNOGRAPHY on his personal computer exhibiting children from the ages of 3 on being RAPED. If someone takes a life, and is fully aware of the destruction and pain they have caused (which jon venables was proven to have been in court), I really don't see what right they have to live? Why should one live if they've taken anothers' life? Where on earth is the justice in that? Why should tax-payers pay to rehabilitate a child (thousands and thousands of pounds per child) who killed a harmless little boy. Get some sense.

it's NOT "pretty simple", nor is the area of ethics in general. Keeping them in prison for life is probably a lot more expensive than comprehencive and good rehabilitation in a humane manner, so your cost complaint is a moot point. Further more, if you can't see someones basic right to a life because you have to rationalize as to deal with the facts of their crime, then i pitty you, and i'm glad you're not a judge, they can't view things in black and white as little girls do

However both options are incredibly expensive; it costs around 140,000 per year to rehabilitate a young person. It would be a lot more inexpensive to end their life humanely via lethal injection. You seem to think that someone has "a basic right to life" even if they end another, I wonder if you'd feel the same if someone raped and murdered your mother?
