¿Why is so impressive a woman shifting like my mother being do it for 40 years?. She has 62 and this lady looks like a grandma driving next to her (or my little sister). Unless this lady really knows how to drive manual, but this is not the case. I really don´t understand.
By the way, never let the car in neutral unless you are stopped.
@TheKorba4 "leave it on gear and press clutch when necessery" is equal to putting it in neutral - you are disconecting the gearbox from the engine in both cases ;)
In diesels and fuel injected petrol engines using the engine as a brake and not putting it neutral is saving fuel as the engine is turned by the speed of the car, not by fuel to support idle speed.
@Overdrive872 Ok, I may be wrong and your answer seems to be logical. But I was driving a car with computer that shows fuel consumption at the moment. And while driving on gear without accelerating it showed 0.0l/100km and on neutral it showed around 5l/100km. I think that it happens because when on neutral, engine needs some fuel to run and has to control it by itself.
What is more I heard on Top Gear that modern engines dont use fuel at all while in gear.
Diesel pumps stop the fuel when decellerating on gear, the same with electronic petrol injections from the 80s to this day - there is a switch which tells the ECU when the pedal is released.
Oh lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz....you already have it. But I wonder, whether you got a problem with your exhaust pipe. It sounds pretty noisy, even for an old diesel. Otherwise superb car, I want one, too :-D
NO SARAH NO EXCUSE TO WASTE THE TRANSMISSION INSTEAD OF BREAKES WANT TO SEE 700,000 MILES it will never happen on your original trannnny if you do that
you´d save more fuel if you gradually shifted down and let the engine brake the car, i do so in my -83 w123 240D when im turning off the road to my village going 90-100km/h letting go of the gas in gear and shifting down when appropriate i never have to use the brakes cus the engine is so strong and saved me much more fuel than putting neutral and braking. which is probably why my brakes tend to rust often...
@coolakiIlen007 swedish guy maybe so but braking with the transmission will fuck up your gears its beter to put the car in Nutural glide down the road and brake if the light changes to green from red before you make it there then put it 2nd or 3rd depending on your speeds
@veggiepowered Man, those are so hard to find stick. Kudos for having a stick Benz. Heh, no manufacturers seem to offer anything in stick anymore, unless it is severely underpowered :(
Can I be critical Sarah? You actually shift gears far too quickly - especially for a 38 year old (4 speed?) box.
Try using your actual PALM - especially the fleshy part (base of your thumb) when moving the gear stick upwards, and the bottom of the fingers when moving downwards.
Also, while the clutch is still depressed, try to stop momentarily in the neutral position as you move from gear to gear - and go gentler!
@EssexBoy696969 actually everyone should switch as you described above, but even here in Europe with all the manual transmission cars, most people are way too quick with shifting gears. If it would be learned while driving lessons, it could save a lot of gearboxes at long term.. just my 2cents from the Netherlands ;)
Good job I know guys that can not drive a stick shift next you will have a pix on you face book with the spedo at 125 mph that was a coworker son did his dad saw his face book

1) You don´t save fuel.
2) You loose control,
CougarChile 2 weeks ago 2
@CougarChile almost right. in ancient cars without electronic injection, neutral saves fuel.

Driving on neutral is not saving fuel. It would be better to leave it on gear and press clutch when necessery :D Love that diesel :)

@TheKorba4 Constantly pressing the clutch will destroy the ball bearing pushing the clutch. Replacing this ball bearing is quite expensive.
