If you go to Harpers Ferry National Park which I think is in West Virginia right there on the border between West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland you can see where they filmed the sequences for Fredericksburg there in the town.

Look as though the Union engineers nearly had to temporarily abandoned the pontoon construction for an amphibious assault on Barksdale.
