*Laughs* I just thought of what would happen if we decorated the tree right after thanks-giving here... It's probably be destroyed by the time christmas came around.
Besides, I don't think I really want christmas deocrations out for three months or more to be honest. XD
(In Canada, thanksgiving is near the beginning of October [right around my birthday] and we often leave our decorations up til new-years)
For a brief moment there, I thought you were going to EAT baby Jesus. I was waiting and waiting, and /sigh...no babies on the menu tonight. Thank you for mentioning the pagan aspects of religion as they relate to Xmas. Yule, Wiccan and Celtic legends and lore are part and parcel to the season. Egyptians would use palm leaves for decorations, not exactly an evergreen tree. Information on Saturnalia might interest you on the topic.
Christian or not, there's religious music I still enjoy.
Nice. It's a holiday, let's enjoy it. All holidays have some meaningless meaning to allow us to justify taking the day off work. The real reason for any holiday is to eat good food, see people we love, and take a break. The different themes are so we can tell them apart. :) We need holidays. If only religion was just a holiday calendar!
@AgentKuo I truly wasn't trying to mock them so much as I was trying to downplay the importance of "their" holiday. I guess the point is that, in my mind, the birth of Jesus belongs in the same category as the old myths - no more, no less.
@AgentKuo I have tons of Christmas stuff given to me by my mother, my grandmother, and my mother in law. At some point, it's all been on the tree. Even if I think I'll never put it on the tree again, I still want it because it holds sentimental value to me.
I absolutely hate when Christmas is called the 'Holiday Season', or the 'Season of Reason' or any other specifically non-Christian epithets. Are we to have Santa Claus booming "Ho, ho, ho, Merry Holidays!"? For the love of 'He-who-does-not-exist', NO!! Christmas is a time of joy and fun and laughter, when everyone celebrates a fat hairy man giving presents to children...and religious people celebrate when a baby was born. There's no name change called for Easter, when murder is glorified!
This video is actually adorable. Haha. :) And it pretty much sums up how I feel about this stuff as well. I mean, I still sing old church songs sometimes, even. Some of the hymns were really pretty. We can appreciate things on an artistic/fun-loving level without buying into the supernatural connotations behind it. :)
It's just another myth, so people shouldn't be butthurt over it... Good for you. It took me coming to another country to appreciate the equating of xianity to other leftover cultural beliefs. Christmas is very secular here, and in fact, is the biggest date night of the year, even more so than Valentine's Day. so yeah, back home, Xmas has retained more xian stuff. so what. it's not any more real than the Santa parts. Take it or leave it, but try not to be butthurt. :-)
@nerdlass Exactly! I'm slowly but surely coming to the realization that nothing about religion, or a lack thereof, is as big of a deal as I thought it was.
JS Bach was a church composer. ALL of his music is christian. X-mas music existed LONG before the 3.5 min radio friendly bullshit we get subjected to now. Listen to that stuff.
I do not understand saying Merry Christ mass as a Atheist . It makes no sense, what am I missing. If you do not believe in something why calibrate something you do not like or believe in. Might as well embrace sharia laws. I just do not understand it. I have to assume that its the greed of getting. I know I am wrong.
@Docthewrench Why complain about not understanding if you are unwilling to do something as simple as watch a video in order to gain the understanding you seem to crave? Moreover, why open a video and comment on it when you have no idea what you're even talking about?
A lovely tree. Although, for a moment there I thought perhaps the cat might be an ornament that is rarely put on the tree (potentially as it's a predatory ornament that sometimes eats the other ornaments and then must be taken to the vet.)

Even as an atheist, I find your anti-theist views rude and offensive.

@AgentKuo I didn't think I was being anti-theist at all.

Why do you have ornaments if you don't put them on the tree? Seems kind of counterproductive or something to me.

Great video. I put an angel on my tree. I also put Santas and reindeer on it. I don't actually "believe" in that either.

@gamutman Christmas is like watching a good movie. All it takes to enjoy it is a wee bit of suspension of disbelief.
