Steve Perry sung this song better and with such ease and no strain no matter if it was live or what. By the way Steve could still sing these songs it would just take 6-10 weeks to get his voice back up to the high notes of Journey, he said it in an interview on Steve Perry online. I just feel like we are only getting 70% of the highs and tenor with Arnel idk just my opinion and when he does hit the notes his voice is more like a rocker. People need to stop being racist and be fair though.

Now I disagree with them not sounding the same because when I heard the audio version first, before even knowing they had changed singers, I didn't know it was a different singer, plus his voice is probably the closest you will get.
this is arnel's first ever concert with the band isnt it? very good! you can tell some of the other band members are still pessimistic but arnel just looked so good and comfortable out there, high fiving and interacting with the crowd. and his projection and stage presence...just to think it was a televised concert with millions of people...very inspiring.

There are dozens of Philipino cover bands in Hong Kong that do Journey better than Journey, so it doesn't surprise me in the least that Arnel is awesome.
@reygood1 he has his own way of performing on stage, different from SP, but the Journey sound that he make is still there. That 's something he could not change.

@rizaignacio okay riza did i confuse? To make it more simple ,like I said, he is different from SP in terms of performing on stage(performing is not just singing), The high energy of AP. He runs,jumps and bounces a a lot,etc etcThose things i didnt see from SP. So I must say it's AP's own style of performing. However, when you listen to his singing , his voice,the Journey sound among their songs is still there and not altered. I hope you get it this time.

Arnel tries to emulate EXACTLY the way steve executed notes while he sang. He is talented, but kind of a cheap imitation of his predecessor. Arnel can sing loud, but what's so great about that? Its awesome because he's tiny and comes from a third world country? If arnel is so good, he should develop his OWN style that does not in any way copy the great steve perry. The U.S. is such a sucker for the underdog, they just want a good story to write. None of these journey clowns would have made it

Haha all the flips are upvoting the complimentary arnel comments and down voting the pro - steve perry comments. its mostly filipinos lurking this thread just like charice stuff too, so no wonder. If they grew up understanding the immortal quality and nuance steve had to his voice, and how the rest of journey screwed him over right after steve's mom came down with cancer, they would understand much better.
The good thing about having Pineda is that Journey is keeping their music alive for the new generations to know it, but the ones like me who were young back in the 80s know that Steve Perry was unique, and no one will ever replace him.
Personally, in MY OPINION, he is a sad emulator. Journey was DEFINED by Steve Perry's voice and licks. To all you people who think you know music, and like to broadcast your "facts" need to check yourselves.
For you to backup your claims saying "it's his first performance" and other excuses... well, they are just that. EXCUSES! That's what PRACTICE is for!
Journey is truly my 2nd favorite band next to Ambrosia (lead by David Pack).
And just for the record, I do appreciate his talent. But, in my OPINION (google it if you don't understand the meaning), Journey (band minus Perry) realized they couldn't do anything without Perry, so after being selfish and not understanding Steve's desire to heal himself (google it), they needed something to replace him. Arnel happens to be that poor puppet.

I was so intrigued about this comparison and so I decided to go to Steve's vids. Upon hearing Steve and Arnel doing DSB, it's just like i"m listening to 2 different versions(some people are wrong upon saying Arnel sounds like Steve cause he just doesn't!). I came up to a realization that they are both great singer in their own right. Arnel can never touch Steve Perry, he has a distinctive unique voice,on the other hand, I also believe that Steve was not as versatile as Arnel is.
He only sounds like Steve perry because there was Steve perry.. He couldn't sing like he does without steve perry.. He grew up listening to Steve perry and imitating his voice and got pretty good at it.. But he would be where he is if there never was Steve perry!

After three years with Journey, AP is still humble as ever. When he's not touring with the band, he's busy doing shows to raise money for his foundation that helps the poor and the needy in his homeland. That to me is what makes him more admirable!

this is arnel's first ever concert with the band isnt it? very good! you can tell some of the other band members are still pessimistic but arnel just looked so good and comfortable out there, high fiving and interacting with the crowd. and his projection and stage presence...just to think it was a televised concert with millions of people...very inspiring.

He has to live them, give honor,preserve the sacredness of those songs, and NOT FOR HIS TO ALTER. @rizaignacio okay riza did i confuse? To make it more simple ,like I said, he is different from SP in terms of performing on stage(performing is not just singing), The high energy of AP. He runs,jumps and bounces a a lot,etc etcThose things i didnt see from SP. So I must say it's AP's own style of performing. However, when you listen to his singing , his voice,the Journey sound among their songs is still there and not altered. I hope you get it this time.

congrats for winning the "song of the 20th century" award for this song. Hey, arnel is the soloist while this song made it to the top. Every member should be congratulated including the old ones. they're all members in this journey. while the world is listening to the journey in general, those against arnel in particular should not listen at all. I don't think the group needs you, whoever you are. i guess you're still listening even though you said you don't like the present soloist.

If you want to dispute the fact that americans are suckers for underprivileged folk who have talent or do something cool and subsequently make it big, just watch daytime talk shows. They love to feature people like that constantly. I do not prefer the new journey; im partial to the old journey; IAC journey bands past and present are/were nothing without the contributions of steve perry, though most people refuse to acknowledge it, including Neil S.

Arnel tries to emulate EXACTLY the way steve executed notes while he sang. He is talented, but kind of a cheap imitation of his predecessor. Arnel can sing loud, but what's so great about that? Its awesome because he's tiny and comes from a third world country? If arnel is so good, he should develop his OWN style that does not in any way copy the great steve perry. The U.S. is such a sucker for the underdog, they just want a good story to write. None of these journey clowns would have made it

If they grew up understanding the immortal quality and nuance steve had to his voice, and how the rest of journey screwed him over right after steve's mom came down with cancer, they would understand much better.

The good thing about having Pineda is that Journey is keeping their music alive for the new generations to know it, but the ones like me who were young back in the 80s know that Steve Perry was unique, and no one will ever replace him.

Personally, in MY OPINION, he is a sad emulator. Journey was DEFINED by Steve Perry's voice and licks. To all you people who think you know music, and like to broadcast your "facts" need to check yourselves.
For you to backup your claims saying "it's his first performance" and other excuses... well, they are just that. EXCUSES! That's what PRACTICE is for!
Journey is truly my 2nd favorite band next to Ambrosia (lead by David Pack).

But, in my OPINION (google it if you don't understand the meaning), Journey (band minus Perry) realized they couldn't do anything without Perry, so after being selfish and not understanding Steve's desire to heal himself (google it), they needed something to replace him. Arnel happens to be that poor puppet.

I was so intrigued about this comparison and so I decided to go to Steve's vids. Upon hearing Steve and Arnel doing DSB, it's just like i"m listening to 2 different versions(some people are wrong upon saying Arnel sounds like Steve cause he just doesn't!). I came up to a realization that they are both great singer in their own right. Arnel can never touch Steve Perry, he has a distinctive unique voice,on the other hand, I also believe that Steve was not as versatile as Arnel is.

he's as close as could be for a replacement...but Steve Perry had much better control and pitch, I hear a lot of flat notes and he's straining in his higher range. All in all, if you HAVE to replace someone like Steve Perry, this guy's pretty good.

After three years with Journey, AP is still humble as ever. When he's not touring with the band, he's busy doing shows to raise money for his foundation that helps the poor and the needy in his homeland. That to me is what makes him more admirable!
