  • great tune!

  • why is everyone fighting over who this is? you can clearly tell its the dead and not garcia/saunders. You can't mistake bobby's guitar in this tune

  • @ deadair789 jerry makes the music come to life ,you can feel the emotion

  • Very similar (same month & 5th as opposed to 1st time played) with better sound...4/25/71 is posted as is:

    4/18/71

    lesser sound, 4th time played

Every version of this the Grateful Dead did is (for them) uncommonly similar. I've heard at least four of them. First (in'75) was 4/29/71 I'm surprised it's not up here... That night's Hard to Handle is not to be missed! &Alligator/drums/jam/GDTRFB/Cold Rain& Snow is SWEET SWEET SWEET!!!

  • keystone encounters?

  • I still think it's funny that they could never get the lyrics right in the chorus. The second time through the real lyric is "If you feel like giving me a lifetime of devotion" but they almost never got it right.

  • why don't you punch all of us, we are 20 million people.

  • Hey -- I thought Jesus was a hippie -- long hair, peace and love, turn the other cheek, etc

  • @usernamemrk if I were a conservative I would punch you in the face.

  • Sweet Jesus, this makes me want to punch a hippie.

    Way to butcher that song.

  • @bladder1010 "Sweet Jesus, this makes me want to punch a hippie."

What a perfect encapsulation of the utter failure of the "Christian right" to live up to the words of the One they claim to follow. WHWJP: Which Hippie Would Jesus Punch?

Some people will never get it. You are one of them.

  • @bootytoot Which hippie would Jesus punch?

None -- he'd send Chuck Norris to take care of that.

  • @bladder1010 haha. What was wrong with it?

  • @JimmyPage97 Nothing's wrong with it, if you hate music / are completely stoned / tone-deaf / have no sense of rythm -- or any combination thereof. Gawd, what a leaden bootmash.

  • @bladder1010 I consider myself someone who loves music, is not tone-deaf, and also has at least some sense of rhythm.

    But still I love this.

  • 20 years ago this song got me into the Dead - much appreciated!

  • Sweet sounds to Rock my soul. See ya at Furthur in the fall

  • sorry, but i hear two guitars, weirs background vocals, and a dearth of keyboards. sounds like dead, not JGB. def '71.

  • Another youngin here....not 18 but still ;) this is a great recording.

thanks for sharing! hope to see ya'll at some furthur shows... red rocks?

  • I just Looked up the set list from the show an ur right. My B. Is sounds just like the one off of well matched Jerry Garcia and merl saunders.

  • @stealyourface9142 - yeah if you don't have it, check out the show on Archive (youtube doesn't seem to like link posting here)....but i just love that spring 71 sound.

  • @stealyourface9142

Don't be so sure about that. If date/venue posted (April 8, 1971 Boston, MA) is correct then it IS the Dead. The Dead only played it 6 times, all in April of 1971, the 8th, 14th, 15th, 18th, and twice during their final (5 night) run at the Fillmore East in NYC on the 25th & 29th ref.'Deadbase' All 6 are very similar especially for the Dead

I've been listening for 40 yrs & this sounds like PHIL, not John Kahn to me.

    PS

Merl may have got Jer to play it 4 the 1st time.

  • This is not the dead it is Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders. also im 18 and im going to see furthur agan in June. hell fuckin ya.

  • @stealyourface9142 - Sorry, kiddo. You posted something that was not true. Hell fucking ya. Have fun at the show, though.

  • @stealyourface9142 very nice man just turned 18 in june got to see furthur already back in march, and im going this weekend to redrocks, i cant wait its going to be sooooooo sick. got 7 hits of drop and a grand to go down with, i cant wait man.

  • @elkbeard. thats sick im going to phish october 19 and furthur november 19 im dead broke tho haha

  • @elkbeard thats wicked sick sounds like mad fun im goin to phish october 19 and furthur november 19 im dead broke tho but it all good ill find my way ahah

  • @stealyourface9142

your an idiot this is the dead the one and only they played this tune - ur 18 its understandable

  • This is not the dead it is Jerry garcia and Merl Saunders.

  • nice to see so many young deadheads.

  • been a dead head since my pops brainwashed me. haha i was like 2 wen i first heard the dead, been listenin to them since i can remember:)

  • Ha! Ha! My 6 year old is all over the Dead, she loves it, course her mama did that, she knows so many of their songs it blows my mind....

  • @SKFisse09 that was like me as akid, I grew up on it, so ive never really branched out to other stuff. Your kid is gonna be amazingly cool and carry on the dead

  • @SKFisse09 my kids are big T Rex fans

  • ya bud me too 18

  • I second that Emotion WORD

  • gery does it right every time

  • The Fillmore East 1971 version released on the commercially released live album is by far the best version of this tune...

I dig this but you just can't beat the perfection of the famous Fillmore East 71 version... if nothing else because of the sound quality difference.

Just my 2 cents... oh and the entire Fillmore East live disc is a must have for any Dead fan. At their best... w/Pigpen and all!!!

  • Is that a Dicks Pick or one of the newer releases?

  • its neither

its just an album called laies and gentlemen the grateful dead : live at the filmore east 71

its been out since at lest the 90's

  • i love the dead btw

  • new age Dead Head right here!

  • finally, a dead head under 30!

    SAME HERE!

    13

  • No kidding, there seems to be a big absence in dead fans theres only one teacher at my school whos a deadhead

im 15 and saw them in buffalo and that was one of the best times of my life. Listen to the dead every day, you know i do...

  • Yeah that's too bad, I think too many people under 20 have no concept of what quality music is since they've had such little exposure to it; good for you

  • kind of, i think it's beginning to take me over, if i don't listen to the dead each day my whole system gets screwed up, i can''t eat properly, lay awake in bed for hours, and also frequently start violent fights and street brawls.

My name is Soundslikepurple and i'm addicted to the dead.

  • Hahaha ive been a dead head my whole life!!

    IM 16

  • and again me too 17

    long live the dead!!

  • The JGB makes this seem like crap.

  • nothing makes this seem like crap.

  • yup its a great tune

  • Can someone please post a version that doesnt cut out in the middle?

  • does anyone have version of this i can get this and if you do please send me a message

  • there is an awesome version in my opinion on 'ladies and gentlemen, the grateful dead-fillmore east' i would send it to you but my copy had taken a beating and is very scratched up.

  • that is a great album

  • This is sweet! Thank-you Sire!!!!

  • buy steppin out. england 72. woohoo! DISC 3= amazing...

  • weisenshit, ur outta ya mind

  • pigpen years was the best!!

  • pigpen was the shit but i have to say mydland years brotha

  • Can you imagine Smokey Robinson covering Dark Star? They could sing anything...extremely well!

  • i love their early days stuff so much, i have the ladies and gentleman box set and its so amazing, its a shame that pigpen died, he was a great singer. i know this isnt him singing in this song but im just saying, its a shame.

  • i agree, pigpen was amazing, ive got some good old pigpen audios on my channel from 68, like lovelight, the eleven and others.

  • i completely agree, brianm1314. if you're a dead fan, and you don't have the ladies & gentlemen box set, you should try to get it. it is amazing. the dead were in their prime closing down the filmore east & the set list is amazing from start to finish (all the classics & amazing covers like this). anywho, just thought i'd pass on that recommendation.

  • swings

  • they don't move around too much on stage, do they?!?

  • Hahahahahahaha! Good Joke!!!

  • that happens sometimes when you're trippin too hard
