Every version of this the Grateful Dead did is (for them) uncommonly similar. I've heard at least four of them. First (in'75) was 4/29/71 I'm surprised it's not up here... That night's Hard to Handle is not to be missed! &Alligator/drums/jam/GDTRFB/Cold Rain& Snow is SWEET SWEET SWEET!!!
I still think it's funny that they could never get the lyrics right in the chorus. The second time through the real lyric is "If you feel like giving me a lifetime of devotion" but they almost never got it right.
@bladder1010 "Sweet Jesus, this makes me want to punch a hippie."
What a perfect encapsulation of the utter failure of the "Christian right" to live up to the words of the One they claim to follow. WHWJP: Which Hippie Would Jesus Punch?
Some people will never get it. You are one of them.
@JimmyPage97 Nothing's wrong with it, if you hate music / are completely stoned / tone-deaf / have no sense of rythm -- or any combination thereof. Gawd, what a leaden bootmash.
@stealyourface9142 - yeah if you don't have it, check out the show on Archive (youtube doesn't seem to like link posting here)....but i just love that spring 71 sound.
Don't be so sure about that. If date/venue posted (April 8, 1971 Boston, MA) is correct then it IS the Dead. The Dead only played it 6 times, all in April of 1971, the 8th, 14th, 15th, 18th, and twice during their final (5 night) run at the Fillmore East in NYC on the 25th & 29th ref.'Deadbase' All 6 are very similar especially for the Dead
I've been listening for 40 yrs & this sounds like PHIL, not John Kahn to me.
@stealyourface9142 very nice man just turned 18 in june got to see furthur already back in march, and im going this weekend to redrocks, i cant wait its going to be sooooooo sick. got 7 hits of drop and a grand to go down with, i cant wait man.
@elkbeard thats wicked sick sounds like mad fun im goin to phish october 19 and furthur november 19 im dead broke tho but it all good ill find my way ahah
@SKFisse09 that was like me as akid, I grew up on it, so ive never really branched out to other stuff. Your kid is gonna be amazingly cool and carry on the dead
Yeah that's too bad, I think too many people under 20 have no concept of what quality music is since they've had such little exposure to it; good for you
kind of, i think it's beginning to take me over, if i don't listen to the dead each day my whole system gets screwed up, i can''t eat properly, lay awake in bed for hours, and also frequently start violent fights and street brawls.
My name is Soundslikepurple and i'm addicted to the dead.
there is an awesome version in my opinion on 'ladies and gentlemen, the grateful dead-fillmore east' i would send it to you but my copy had taken a beating and is very scratched up.
i love their early days stuff so much, i have the ladies and gentleman box set and its so amazing, its a shame that pigpen died, he was a great singer. i know this isnt him singing in this song but im just saying, its a shame.
i completely agree, brianm1314. if you're a dead fan, and you don't have the ladies & gentlemen box set, you should try to get it. it is amazing. the dead were in their prime closing down the filmore east & the set list is amazing from start to finish (all the classics & amazing covers like this). anywho, just thought i'd pass on that recommendation.
great tune!

why is everyone fighting over who this is? you can clearly tell its the dead and not garcia/saunders. You can't mistake bobby's guitar in this tune

@bladder1010 I consider myself someone who loves music, is not tone-deaf, and also has at least some sense of rhythm.
But still I love this.

The Fillmore East 1971 version released on the commercially released live album is by far the best version of this tune...
I dig this but you just can't beat the perfection of the famous Fillmore East 71 version... if nothing else because of the sound quality difference.
Just my 2 cents... oh and the entire Fillmore East live disc is a must have for any Dead fan. At their best... w/Pigpen and all!!!
