one of my (few) other videos "Time lapse Tulsa" was 3000 pictures taken 5 seconds apart then put together as a video. Normal video is about 30 pictures a second, so 3000 pictures would be 100 seconds.On the other hand, 3000 pictures taken 5 seconds apart will require about 4.5 hours.
The XSi doesn't have a built in timer so you have to buy one from Pclix or some other brand.
