I know it's recent, but they recently put out that stone cold bottom line on the biggest superstar of all time dvd, and in there austin says when he looks back at his heel turn/heel run, he regrets it.
Him hugging and singing to Vince only lasted about 2 to 3 months. Granted is was stupid seeing Austin acting like a punk it didn't last very long. Since Rock started getting half booed around this time, maybe they should've turned Rock heel instead of Austin, but if they did do that it would have been 1999 all over again and no one would've cared. So I get why they turned Austin heel.
@schtheguitarman neither 1 of them shouldve turned heel. they were both over and austin was more over so turning a face who is completely over heel is the stupidest thing ever
B) It was something different. He had a good feud with the Undertaker and he did a pretty good job playing a badass heel when he beat up his longtime "friend" Jim Ross and of course Michael Cole. He and HHH did a good job of getting Lita and the Hardys over.
C) When the Invasion angle started, it offered a whole new twist on McMahon vs Austin. You said yourself that you got tired of seeing face Austin beat up heel Vince every week. Having McMahon face and Austin heel was cool and unexpected.
They turned Austin heel for a few good reasons. A) The Invasion storyline was about to start and the Alliance needed a leader. The Rock and Austin were the two most over guys in the WWE. Austin was far better suited to lead the Alliance than The Rock. Austin cut his teeth in WCW and ECW while The Rock was a third - generation WWE superstar and his roots are in WWE. The Rock leading team Alliance would have made no sense because The Rock had absolutely nothing in common with the WCW/ECW guys.
I thought it was funny when he was a heel even though it was as stupid as when Kane started talking. What should've happened was Austin should've gotten Vince's help at Mania. celebrated with him with beer then stunned him. Proving that he's still the badass loner he always been. And then for the coming months Austin would be negotiating with WCW and WWF. Till finally he decides to stun both Shane and Vince to join ECW.

@thriller2rayne wouldnt have worked why would a badass austin need mcmahons help? and even when he celebrated and then stunned him it still wouldve made him lose steam. it shouldve either ended with a clean finish with austin winning cuz rock was gonna leave and do scorpion king
@FastandFurious450 Cause Austin does whatever it takes to be the best in the world even if it's making a deal with his enemy but..at the end of the day. A snake cannot be trusted. And the would added depth to his character than your basic badass babyface.
It was actually Austin's idea to turn heel but it didn't work,he tried everything he could do to get heat even join the Alliance but it didn't matter.2001 was Austin's year,he carried the company, with Rock gone,HHH hurt,
I actually loved Austin as a heel. Austin knew he was stale and wanted to turn heel and I feel like it was the right move. It wasn't the heel turn that ruined Austin's buzz. Imo it had more to due with the way he was booked after turning babyface in 2002. I really don't think Austin had much left to do as a face so in retrospect I think the heel turn in 2001 bought him an extra year. Personally I also think 2001 was Austin's best year.
I agree it was dumb but wrestling has been shitty since 01 except for roh and I just wanted to get your thoughts on sincara cause I can't stand him and I hate how people think his moves are good wwe is tryin to act like he is rey from the 90's except rey did way better shit
I think that when they turned Austin heel it would have been a perfect time to elevate Stevie Richards as a main event babyface to feud with Austin. Then Stevie could have won the title and the Stevie era would have begun.
Whats even worse is they had no major marketing face to combat him for all those months so everyone was like "fuck were stuck with this, so we might as well cheer him" Cause booing austin is like booing jesus.
