THIS IS THE FATHER OF LEP'S POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME. THE MONTROSE DEBUT IS STILL FUCKING EPIC ALMOST 40 YRS. LATER AND HOLY SHIT SAM THE MAN'S BALLS TO THE WALL STANDING HAMPTON IS NOW OVER 30 YRS OLD. THIS GANG IS WHY REAL ROCK AND ROLL WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME! DURAN DURAN..ANYONE? LMFAO!
The only band-penned tune on the debut Montrose album, and drummer Denny Carmassi, bassist Bill Church, guitarist Ronnie Montrose, and vocalist Sammy Hagar crafted a tight-sounding and enduring classic that I just can't ever get tired of hearing!
But heck, that entire album is "hard, sweet, and sticky".
Lyrics: WHEN YOU NEED A FRIEND THROUGH THICK AND THIN... DON'T LOOK TO THOSE ABOVE YOU WHEN YOU'RE DOWN AND OUT AND THERE AIN'T NO DOUBT NOBODY WANTS YOU YOU'RE ROCK CANDY BABY YOU'RE HARD SWEET AND STICKY YOU'RE ROCK CANDY BABY SO HARD SWEET AND STICKY ALL RIGHT, YEAH HARD SWEET AND OH,YEAH... WHEN YOU'RE 17 REACHING FOR YOUR DREAMS DON'T LET NO ONE REACH THEM FOR YOU- PULL UP YOUR PANTS STEP OUT, TAKE A CHANCE IF IT CAN BE DONE YOU CAN DO IT !
I wore this album out in high school. The cassette didn't have any lettering left on it from so many trips into the Pioneer Supertuner in my van....GOD I LOVED GROWING UP IN THE 70s!!!!!
Lived in Cicero Illinois where when you were15 you ran the pool table and drank like your mom and dad & more !Good music helped !!! Espesially when your DOWN & OUT !!!
God if we only looked as hot as we we were ! And as smart !!! I can still move it at 48 but I sometimes can move good if the arthritis doesn't kick in !!!!!
If the grooves could be worn out, it would have been this album! This record really blew the doors off the other guys and really gave a edgy spark to hard rock. If I had my choice of what? Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult? There was nobody that came close to how this album had an impact for hard rock. Brilliant!
@dannnylaws53 Sorry there chum, but Sammy was not playing guitar on any of the Montrose albums. Ronnie put it in the deal when he signed up Sammy to front the band. He didn't want anyone taking away his thunder.
@dannnylaws53 Sammy did not play guitar in the band, "Montrose." In fact, this is the very reason the band broke up. Sammy Hagar wanted to play guitar and Ronnie would not agree to it. This was the one disappointing aspect of my first concert (earlier post) in that while "Montrose" was on the bill, it was "Ronnie Montrose" solo that played. By the way, he was touring for his solo record 'Open Fire' the producer of which was Edgar Winter.
TRIVIA QUESTION PEOPLE!!!!.Who played gitar in the "FRANKENSTEIN" song when HE played for the Johnny Winter band?........answer next week but i"ll be checking yours until then.
@MattHatter UMMM, yeah dick I know what a "whammy bar" is I was playing guitar when you were still shitting green.... The dude I was commenting to said this song is about a "wham bar" which is moronic comment... As far as I know the song is about some girls pussy being like rock candy... Hot,sweet and sticky
This reminds me of my very first concert; The Warehouse in New Orleans, 1978. I was 14. Van Halen, Montrose and Journey. Journey was the headliner, touring for their Infinity record. Ronnie Montrose (solo) played second. Van Halen was the opening act! None of us had heard of them. 'You really got me' was all over the radio starting the next day.
@JeffroTa That must of been something to behold. I saw Montrose on Guam back in the 80's and Journey when the toured the Look Into The Future release. Both were great shows.
Wow, how cool, havent thought of this tune in years! Takes me back to the winter of '76-77, when it was below zero from like November til March! We stayed warm by rocking the house!
@DancingSpiderman WOW... "sissy anger"??... Your the one threatening complete strangers.... Your not going "MAKE me do anything..... Ever been slapped up side the head with 9 inches of limp dick??... I've done it to punks like before, and I will do it again if you keep running your cocksucker on me
My friend is 62 years old, and when I showed up at her house today to help her make cookies for the church cookie swap, she had Rock Candy turned up just as LOUD as it could get! It was f*ckin' AWESOME, watching her get off to this kick-butt Montrose stuff! When this one was finished, I called up Space Station #5 for her and she went nuts. She's OFFICIALLY the rockinest Gramma ever!
I'm 23 and I grew up listening to anything Sammy Hagar has put out. I don't care what anyone says he will always be the number one reason I love rock music. He's why I sing and Eddie Van Halen is why I play the guitar.
this is as good as it gets, Ronnie you should never have let go of Sammy, and Denny is the greatest, dig it. Dan, the perfect bass player, thing is the album sounds better than ever after 37 years! Rock Candy, wowsah
i play guitar and my friend (who sucks at guitar) wanted to learn Crazy Train. After about 3 hours he got it somewhat down and i said "you've learned one of the classics." He said "no u idiot classic is like beethoven and bach and all that." Guess he'll be learning the rest himself.
@comeonewtf what'd Sammy say about his Montrose days? I know he and ronnie fought back then but now they are old buddies...when you get older, you let go of the dumb shit
@UberKrispy Sammy is so smart. He said that Ronnie was controlling the band the whole time, then he kicked Sam out after their tour, but Sammy said at the time he was thinking, "That motherfucker" but looking back he helped Sammy become what he became, so in hindsight he's grateful for those experiences.
@comeonewtf Yeah i saw an interview with Denny Carmassi the drummer and he said when he jammed with Ronnie and Sammy recently it dawned on him how awesome their chemistry is, and unfortunately when you are 23, 24 years old you don't realize it.
Just when I thought my flashbacks were over, I had to come here and listen to this. 197something, seen them with Black Oak Arkansas. OOOOoooh, the memories I can still remember. Many, many brain cells ago. Those were good times. I had no idea that was Sammy Hager. Wow! And we both survived. Sugar for the soul. Settling back down now. OK we're good. Back to reality. Bye bye.

That's ridiculous. It is rare today for kids to listen to good music like this. But some, like me (I'm 16) actually recognize how amazing this music really is. And for that reason, I will like your comment.
@andrewkrip i'm only 17 and i mostly listen to rock instrumentals, but growing up with my uncle (professional studio drummer in the southeast for 40 years) i believe stuff like this is as good as it gets.
@andrewkrip You deserve a comment if you can grasp the power of this music. This is part of the beautiful world of soul. Newer music is seriously lacking in this area. Thumbs up my friend.
Anytime I hear someone young say they recognize how amazing this music is, it takes me back to when I was in my youth. I never took the time to really appreciate it then. Amazing it is and it lives through you and the others that recognize how amazing it is! You may like Jimi Hendrix, Pali Gap ? Good Vibes to you little brother!
@GORDITO1000 i may not b a 40 yr old but i do have an old soul...and i say LONG LIVE 70-80s! although my music starts from 40's-90's....i swear i got an old soul. hahaha i even own a car older than me. haha
I'm here because I made up a song on my guitar and my dad told me it reminded him of this song. So I came to see how similar the two were. Ha! Some of my riffs were exactly the same.
HEARD ROCK THE NATION IN A MUSIC STORE IN 1976 WENT TO THE COUNTER ASKED THE STONED DUDE WORKING WHAT BAND IT WAS HE TOLD ME WENT RIGHT OVER TO THE M'S BOUGHT IT AND WORN IT OUT!
walked into my 10 year old sons room this morning and he was playing this on his gutair, thought it was the radio. i just stood there in disbelief. when he was through he looked at me and said i wish i was born back than dad the music today dosent have this kind of soul. i said play it again and this time wake up the neighbors.
@1962drob YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!! My wife and I along with my brother saw Sammy Hagar a few years back and halfway they took an intermission only to come back with Montrose and of course Ronnie was their and that was the HIGHLIGHT of the night.MONTROSE ROCKS!! ROCK ON!!!!!
I saw Montrose last night and would encourage every fan of this album/era to go out and see the most recent incarnation of the band. Ronnie's chops, tone and phrasing are as good as ever and and the band flat out kicks ass. The set list includes every song from this album, plus a couple of others from subsequent albums, including I Got The Fire. Smokin set......

@GORDITO1000 You know those decades won't live long if you're not permitting anyone under the age of 40 to show support... just saying.

I would love to hear Chickenfoot play this live, with just a slight updated feel to it. This is one of my all time favorite songs.

I'm here because I made up a song on my guitar and my dad told me it reminded him of this song. So I came to see how similar the two were. Ha! Some of my riffs were exactly the same.

What happened? Amazing music used to be on the radio. Now I have to search high and low to find it because I can't stand that mainstream trash.
