I love both Dionne Warwick's and Aretha Franklin's versions the most. I like the way Aretha sings the phrase "walk on by" better than the way Dionne did.

Amazing rendition by Aretha Franklin. I think I like better than Dionne Warwick's...it's blue but forceful. It's not an invitation like Warwick's, it's a command.
i usually prefer aretha's voice but for this song i prefer dionne's light touch.... i think it suits the song better. either way AMAZING song... don't know who wouldn't love it
Ah... I remember 30 years ago that only three non Opera singers were consistently referred to as diva: alphabetically Ms. Franklin, Ms. Streisand, and Ms. Warwick. Time after time-- the only pop divas. Now they let almost anything pass with undeserved praise.
@ernmitch1968 LOL, Now that is soooo true & the worst part is a whole lot of Spider Monkeys are walking around & gracing these stages in wigs, eyelashes, dresses & strong built pumps really believing that they are DIVAS! U even have the ridiculous Beyonce making songs referring to herself as a DIVA, it's nauseating.

Dude's I realise it's up to personal opinion as to who you enjoy singing this more etc. But Dude's this is just so good. Their is no comparison. Dionne Warwicks, is so good but this is the ground we walk on, this is the wind that blows, this is the love we feel, this is us, when you wake up in the morning and your mind turns on, play this tune and listen to God.
Dionne Warwick's version was the one i used to play then,...but Aretha has captured how i felt when i lost the only girl i have truely loved, and even today 46 years on.. i have never felt the way i did then.
Aretha's version is great....you can feel the soul in her rendition....probably would have heard more soul if it were up to her......Dionne's version is why Burt wanted her for most of his music.....she has a voice that appeals to everyone.......both are fantastic.
@fireandrain22 No it does not. Aretha does a wonderful job here. It's not as though she's turned it into a heavy metal track or anything (had that been the case, I'd have probably agreed with you), or sung it badly. Comments such as yours often come from people who are so familiar with a particular recording of a song that they can't stand the thought of someone else singing it. What's really so bad about Aretha's rendition? How exactly has the song "lost its magic"?
@marksoutof10 LOOK, Don`t get me wrong, i love Aretha, I have many of her records and i think she`s the only Queen of soul, i downloaded this song and i`ve listening it, i have to admit that actually liked me, maybe my comment was bad, but i think this song was meant for Dionne`s voice as well as "anyone who had a heart" don`t make me over, etc. Nobody would ever do "I never loved a man" "do right man" "natural woman" "call me" like Aretha, so that`s my point of view..
@carlosthomasfernande She didn't release an album called "The Queen in Waiting". A Columbia records compilation was released back in 2002 of her work back in the early early to mid 60's. It was called "The Queen in Waiting". She had nothing to do with it!
Really, really interesting... Aretha at the start of her career, including this on her LP because it's already a hit for Dionne, at that time the much more established artist.
Bachrach/David were just on the verge her of going beyond the state-of-the-art r'n'b they had been writing, and mutating in other directions.
No! No! No! Jason. This is my all time favorite song. But ONLY by the real queen of soul . Dionne Warwick. Sorry Aretha - this wasn't your hit, babe! (I don't care that she's from DEETROIT )
@BlackMonk66 Just because Dionne work intensely with Burt and Hal doesn't mean that her interpretations are better than others. I know for a fact they aren't.
@TheQueenAretha No. You hold the opinion that they aren't. "Better" isn't a statement of fact. Many people hold a different opinion from yours, including Burt Bacharach, even though he did like Aretha's version of "I Say A Little Prayer."
@BlackMonk66 ANd many people hold a different opinion from yourself. Burt didn't just like it he thought it was the best interpretation of that song. Aretha has done alot of Dionne's song and she had did a far greater job with them as she does with many of her covers.
@TheQueenAretha I'm glad you understand that it's an opinion and not a fact now. I'd like to see the actual quote where Bacharach says that he thought Aretha did it better than Dionne. He often talks about how the reason he advanced so far in his writing was because of Dionne's talent. I don't think Dionne could have done "Respect" as well as Aretha, but when Aretha does "Walk On By," she's doing the same thing, walking on ground that Dionne owns.
@BlackMonk66 He said that he thinks that Aretha's version is the best. After Aretha covers a song, it is hers. And this song is no different. Aretha took it and made it hers.
@TheQueenAretha I'd still like to see the actual quote, not your paraphrase. I've read a lot of Bacharach interviews and that doesn't sound like him. He LOVED Dionne's voice.
We're talking more than 40 years after the fact, and these songs are still remembered as Dionne Warwick songs, despite all the people who recorded them.If anyone else's versions had been definitive, the songs would be associated with them instead of Dionne.
@BlackMonk66 If you want to than you go and find it. No one is stopping you. I don't have a single thing to lie about. All i can say is see for yourself. Just because you love someone else voice doesn't mean that someone else can go off and make a version that said better likes best. Like i said there are many Bacharach songs that Dionne originally sung and people have done a better interpretation. Such as Ella Fitzgerald when she interpreted "Alfie".
@As I said, I did find the quote, and it's not what you claimed. He said Aretha's record was better because of the time changes. His exact words were "It's not about the vocal. It's about the feel."
"Alfie" proves my point. Dionne didn't do the original, but her version was so much better than the earlier ones that the song is identified with her and not Cillia Black or Cher, both of whom sang it in the movie and had hits in their respective countries.
@BlackMonk66 He stated that he think Aretha's interpretation is better case closed. You are trying to get one in by adding this shit about vocals. This doesn't matter but Aretha's has a better tone than Dionne and but that isn't what makes her interpretation better.
@TheQueenAretha It's not "shit." It's what he said. If you want to look it up, it was from an NPR interview. The transcript is online. I'm sure he likes Aretha as a singer, but he did say that the reason he preferred her recording of "Prayer" was the feel of the time changes.
@TheQueenAretha Do you even listen to yourself? When someone-even Burt Bacharach-says something criticizing one of your favorites, you say it's just an opinion, but you present your own opinions as fact.
@TheQueenAretha Right. Your OPINIONS can be proved as facts, yet what Burt Bacharach says is just opinion and doesn't matter. It's a pity Bacharach didn't know as much about music as you do. Then he might have written something really good.
@BlackMonk66 Some of the things i said were not opinion they were facts and they can be proven as such. I never said Burt didn't know more about than i do, what i am saying is Burt is just one man a very brilliant man but his views about Aretha or anyone else interpretation of his song is merely his view.
@TheQueenAretha "Ella did no such thing as making the song worse"-opinion "Aretha's has a better tone than Dionne"-opinion "Aretha perfected the melody by having her background singers sing the chorus"-opinion Ella's " Alfie" was better than Dionne's-opinion "After Aretha covers a song it is hers"-opinion. So, which are the facts that can be proven?
As you say, Burt is a brilliant man, so I think his opinions are worth considering. After all, he wrote the song the way he did for a reason.
@TheQueenAretha No. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about which version is better, but this is Burt Bacharach talking about music. That's always an opportunity to learn something. I listened to both versions and thought about why he said what he did, and I came away knowing something about arranging I didn't know before. I don't agree with him. I think the thing that probably bothers him makes Dionne's record great, but it's something I wouldn't have thought about if not for him.
@TheQueenAretha If you're interested. I think it's the way the strings come in. For me, it gave that section a nice lift, but he might think they're signaling the change too obviously. I guess it's normal when you do something and some else does a different version that you like to think "maybe I should have done it that way instead."
@TheQueenAretha Ok. I found the quote you're talking about. He does say he preferred Aretha's record. Specifically, he said it was because the changes in the time signiture flowed better in that one than the one he did. I've also heard that he didn't like Aretha's vocals because she wasn't singing the melody, but since I haven't found that quote, I'm not assuming it's true.
@TheQueenAretha I said I hadn't seen the quote, but it's plausible. It's well-known that Bacharach didn't like people taking liberties with what he wrote. He complained about Love changing the chords to My Little Red Book and he didn't like when Ella Fitzgerald didn't do the 2/4 measure in "I'll Never Fall In Love Again."
@BlackMonk66 But who is Burt to do such a thing. He might have written the songs but that does mean someone can't come along and bring new light to the music. Music is about expression and there is no limitation to what is done to music.
@TheQueenAretha Who is he? He's the man who wrote the songs. He's BURT BACHARACH, one of the most important songwriters of the last 50 years and someone who unquestionably knows music. If he has an opinion about music, it's worth hearing. If he thinks Love or Ella made the songs worse, it's something to consider. I mean, I like both, but I'd never say Bacharach was wrong. Besides, if you'll accept him praising Aretha, it's only fair to accept him criticizing, too.
@BlackMonk66 I don't care how important he is. He is not god and he doesn't not have say so on the genuis of others. His opinion is just what it is an opinion, he can't not stop someone else from interpreting one of his songs and bringing new light to them. That is what music is about. Burt is just like everyone else, he can be wrong. Ella did no such thing as making the song worse. I don't care if he praise her or not that doesn't change my views.
@BlackMonk66 I agree. Dionne could not have pulled off Respect and nor should she attempt to. The feel is not her. Walk on By is not a soul song. It is a classic, with a simple theme and sounds better sung without vocal embellishments. The texture of the music (the piano-tears) when the words "Walk on By" are sung in the chorus is the only sense of emotion needed. The rest is supposed to indicate she is remaining cool on the exterior in case she runs into the man she loves on the street.
Aretha is definitely the "QUEEN OF SOUL", and she rightfully earned that title. However, this song is and ALWAYS WILL BE Dionne's song. Dionne's version of this song is far superior in my opinion.
@963821 Yes.....she can't sing Bacharach the way Dionne Warwick can, but then again, no one can. Aretha is undoubtably The Queen Of Soul, and will always have my respect for that. But Dionne Warwick is the "VOICE" of Burt Bacharach.
dayum, where is the love...i thought music brought people closer together...with all this arguing and hostility i hope somebody is getting a cut of aretha's and dionne's profits...as for lady day...please, no one is in the league of lady day...billie holiday is modern music. oh, fuck...did i just create another argument...lol. oh, well, that's life...healthy debate is good for the soul...
Dionne Warwick is my favorite singer of all time. But I like the Melissa Manchester version of this song the best. Aretha is better at doing her own thing.
Just like I Say A Little Prayer for You, Dionne's is the classic and better version. Dionne handles the Bacharach/David songs better than all the other ladies out there. She just has a subtle quality to her voice and her ability to handle the key changes are unmatched.
On the flip side Dionne couldn't touch songs like Natural Woman, Chain of Fools, and Respect.
@TheQueenAretha Of course I would expect that from someone titled "The Queen Aretha," but Bacharach himself said that no one sings his songs better than Dionne.
@dastaylor Burt has said that Aretha version of Say A Little Prayer is better than his own. To me it is all about phrasing and Aretha phrasing is 2nd to none. Love Dionne but that is how i feel.
@TheQueenAretha Ehhh....of course you are an Aretha fan..... he said her version is better than HIS own. Not better than Dionne's. Only Dionne has been able to fully handle the key changes in his songs. Walk On By is Dionne's song, her subtlety is what made her crossover so well. Aretha was always stuck in church/gospel mode and never really reached beyond that sound. People just liked the power in her voice but the colors weren't there. And her phrasing is not a tenth of what Dionne's is today.
@dastaylor He was talking about Dionne's version when he said his own. Which is true. What in the world are you talking about "fully handle the key changes in his songs" it is all about interpretation and phrasing and Aretha almost alway does an excellent interpretation that is fanatasic. Newflash! Aretha has more crossover appeal than Dionne. Dionne never has a number one hit, she never had a number album. Aretha was one of three top selling females of her generation. So don't go there.
@dastaylor And Aretha wasn't stuck in gospel. Gospel is the foundation of her interpretation. Gospel is roots but she is more than just gospel and she is more than just a Soul singer. Aretha can sing anything. Aretha has touched the hearts of millions all over the world in ways that Dionne never could. The reason people loved Aretha was because there was no one like her. She was so different from everybody else and her conviction and phrasing was uncomparble. You must be out of your mind.
@dastaylor One thing i don't ever have to worry about is Dionne uping Aretha when it comes to phrasing. One touches Aretha when it comes to phrasing and interpretation. Dionne just doesn't cut it.
@TheQueenAretha Really? Aretha's phrasing has been sloppy for the last 20 years. She mumbles words together and half of what she sings is unrecognizable. I just saw Dionne again and could understand everything she was singing. Not only do I understand it, I feel it. Aretha just screams and mumbles. Even in her hey day, she really was nothing more than a big voice. She has been given WAY too much credit over the years. She had some great songs and sang them well but there have been better singers
@dastaylor For Aretha entire 50+ years in the industry, Aretha has never lost her uncomparble phrasing. Dionne as good as she is can't touch Aretha in terms of phrasing. Aretha's voice has changed but her soul and her gift of interpretation has never left her. To this very day Aretha can still make people feel the same passion and feeling that they did when she was in her prime. Dionne just don't cut it. Her reading are average to say the most. I don't care how well you understood Dionne.......
@dastaylor she has never been in the same caliber of a singer as Aretha. Aretha is the greatest singer ever. She has has a body of work that proves every single word. Everytime she sings, Aretha display her musicianship and abilty to interpret a song. And please has never screamed. She belts but most importantly she sings. Aretha has proven time and time again that Aretha is more than just a big voice. Aretha has proven herself as a singer. Her body of work can;t be touched. Dionne has never....
@dastaylor Did anything that compares to what Aretha has done for music. She is the most respected woman in music and the most important musical female of the 20th century along with Ella Fitzgerald. A singer like Aretha comes once in a lifetime. You say she has been give too much credit when in fact Aretha has earned her respect and deserves every praise, award, honor and tribute she gets. She is that damn amazing. There is only one singer that is better than Aretha and that is Ella Fitzgerald.
@dastaylor And Aretha and Ella are so close when it comes to there greatness. Other than that Aretha is the Greatest Singer of All TIme. She has only one peer when it comes to being the Greatest. Dionne is not even a distance away from Aretha.
@TheQueenAretha lol.....Dionne broke barriers and won records as well. Aretha became more popular, but more popular doesn't always equal better. Madonna is more popular than Aretha, is she better? No. I didn't say Aretha wasn't a good singer but there are other great singers out there who are just as talented or more so and may not have achieved the same recognition. I believe she got lucky and that she is over-hyped. Bacharach wrote the song for Dionne NOT Aretha. It is her song. end of story.
@dastaylor Dionne as great as she is can't compare to the singer Aretha is and what Aretha has done for music. You are right more popular doesn't mean better but we are talking about Aretha over her, without a doubt she is better. And Madonna is no where near as respected or has the impact that Aretha has had. There are many great singers out there but Aretha has proven to be the BEST. Her musicaility and interpretive skill set her apart. There is no one better, other than Ella Fitzgerald.
@dastaylor Aretha has nothing to do with anything. Aretha was destine to be as great as she is. A talent like her is only one in a million. You obviously don't know what the hell you are talking about. There is no hype to Aretha, she has proven her greatness. There is nothing she has to do. Her body of work is untouchable and with every chance she greats she displays her genuis. There is a reason why Aretha has had such an impact on music. All you have to do is listen to her.
@TheQueenAretha Again, being wildly popular doesn't necessarily mean that someone is talented. I am not saying she isn't talented, she most certainly is, I just do not think and there are others out there that think she is as great as everyone makes her out to be. I think there have been more than a few superior singers and song stylists. She is just not everyone's cup of tea......
Every chance she gets she displays her greatness? I have seen her share of bad vocal performances.
@dastaylor There is a reason why Aretha gets so much praise and honors. She is an amazing singer. It doesn't matter if those people thinks she isn't as great as but in truth she is the greatest. I know many people who prefer other singers to Aretha but they can't deny that Aretha is the better singer. There is only one singer that is above Aretha as a singer and that is Ella Fitzgerald other than that there is no other person. You might not like her but that doesn't take away that she is.....
@dastaylor She greatest singer of all time. Aretha has rarely had a bad vocal performance. You obviously don't know a thing about her. Aretha is still showing her greatness with her interpretations. Aretha Franklin is a one in a million singer. Thats that.
@TheQueenAretha Agree to disagree, I never said that she wasn't a good singer. I just said that she should stick to her own songs. I do not care for her interpretations of other singers songs. Dionne is unique and I don't like Aretha's "gospel," take on her songs. Again it works for Respect, Natural Woman, etc. Not for the Bacharach songs.....
@dastaylor Once again you know nothing about Aretha. Aretha has been doing covers her entire career. She is the best at them. What she does is she takes those songs and make it hers. LIke she did with this songs. This is her interpretation and how are you going to agrue about this. She record this in 1964. I am pretty sure you don't know a damn thing about Aretha singing other peoples songs. A great singer has the ability to take any song and make it hers. Dionne is no where near as unique as...
@dastaylor Aretha her voice to me is ordinary. Aretha doesn't do a gospel take. Half of Aretha's body of work are interpretation of song. Back in the day everybody did them. And a great singer as Ella and Aretha were the best at interpreting those songs. You can tell that you no very little about her. Aretha is more than just Respect. And Aretha has done many Burt Bacharach songs and did them better. Aretha alway made his songs better.
@TheQueenAretha In your opinion. Not everyone thinks that way. Aretha has a "louder," voice more powerful maybe but power is not everything. Dionne has a very beautiful voice. Take Sade for example she doesn't have as powerful of a voice but no one would say it is ordinary. You are equating being louder with better..... Aretha can't sing certain songs very well at all..... The Star Spangled Banner for instance or anything that requires subtlety.
@dastaylor It's not an opinion, it is a fact that Aretha is in a superior league of singers. Aretha vocally ability is only one part of what makes Aretha amazing but it isn't the most important part. It is her musicianship. Which she shows everytime she sings. Dionne voice is nice but it is no where near as special as Aretha's. Never has and never will be. I never said a powerful voice makes a great singer in fact it doesn't. Take Billie Holiday she didn't have a great voice what so ever but....
@dastaylor Billie was an fantastic singer. She barely had any powerful but her interpretive abilities and phrasing set her apart. Also being loud and being powerful or resonate are too different things. Aretha has done a great interpretation of The Star Spangled Banner, don't try to put her in that box, she knows more how to use restrain and she does with everything she does. You don't know shit about Aretha. And it shows with every comment.
@dastaylor Bitch you don't know shit about me and for the record you are wrong. Get the hell off this site. I haven't been bought into a damn thing. Her music said it all. Fuck you and don't ever fucking come her again.
@TheQueenAretha Wow, I just thought we were having a healthy debate. It is You Tube a public site open to anyone. I can go where ever I please. You did not even post this video. But you are right you are not worth arguing with at all. You take your fandom way too seriously......
@dastaylor Healthy debate my ass. If you can go where ever you want why don't you go to hell. You are full of shit and you need to get lost. You have been wasting my time. Now go suck it.
@dastaylor 20 hours ago @dastaylor Healthy debate my ass. If you can go where ever you want why don't you go to hell. You are full of shit and you need to get lost. You have been wasting my time. Now go suck it.
@TheQueenAretha I agree with a great deal of what you wrote about Aretha, but the manner in which you express yourself is a real drag. It's music. Enjoy what you like and leave the rest, and the rest of us in peace.
I usually hate debates about which version of a song is better... so I am a little annoyed at myself for wanting to participate in this one: To my ears anyway, I think the Warwick version sounds just a little more aloof, like she's holding it together. The Franklin vocal sounds way more lonely, like she's just on the verge of freaking out. It gives me flashbacks of every time my heart has ever been stomped on, so to me, this one is the cream of the crop.
two singer two different ways they sang the song. Dionne 's way it sounded like she didn't believe that she could, Walk On By, Aretha you sure know that what she going to do which was, Walk On By.
I like both versions. We had this album in my house, so this was the fisrt one that I knew of. Both ladies sing in it in a style that suits them individually. They both have many hits under their belt, so no matter what anyone says, they both got it going on, and if they neer sing another note, neither had anything to prove to the listening public! They alreay did with their wealth of work.
i am gonna get thumbs down but yes this is the queen but dionnes version I like best. She sounds happy like fuck u motherfucka imm be aight.Aretha cryin.good cryin but see cryin
Chills of rapture every time when I hear Her Voice. Miss Aretha is a goddess of song! I love Her. And I am truly sadden to hear that Dee Dee Warwick has left this world. Nevertheless, she is with us always in the beautiful music she bequeathed to art. Thank you Aretha and thank you Dee Dee!

WITHOUT DIONNE SINGING IT, THIS SONG LOSES ITS MAGIC
fireandrain22 1 year ago
@fireandrain22 No it does not. Aretha does a wonderful job here. It's not as though she's turned it into a heavy metal track or anything (had that been the case, I'd have probably agreed with you), or sung it badly. Comments such as yours often come from people who are so familiar with a particular recording of a song that they can't stand the thought of someone else singing it. What's really so bad about Aretha's rendition? How exactly has the song "lost its magic"?
marksoutof10 1 year ago
@marksoutof10 LOOK, Don`t get me wrong, i love Aretha, I have many of her records and i think she`s the only Queen of soul, i downloaded this song and i`ve listening it, i have to admit that actually liked me, maybe my comment was bad, but i think this song was meant for Dionne`s voice as well as "anyone who had a heart" don`t make me over, etc. Nobody would ever do "I never loved a man" "do right man" "natural woman" "call me" like Aretha, so that`s my point of view..
fireandrain22 1 year ago
Aretha's not bad, but... that's Dionne's original sound track in the background, can't compare? It still show cases Dionne.

Bachrach/David were just on the verge her of going beyond the state-of-the-art r'n'b they had been writing, and mutating in other directions.
tuxguys 1 year ago
No! No! No! Jason. This is my all time favorite song. But ONLY by the real queen of soul . Dionne Warwick. Sorry Aretha - this wasn't your hit, babe! (I don't care that she's from DEETROIT )
motowngirl65 1 year ago
@motowngirl65 You must be out of your mind. There is only one Queen of Soul and that is Aretha Franklin. Dionne doesn't even come close!
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha Queen of soul, fine, but Dionne was the queen of interpreting Bacharach/David songs.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 Just because Dionne work intensely with Burt and Hal doesn't mean that her interpretations are better than others. I know for a fact they aren't.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha No. You hold the opinion that they aren't. "Better" isn't a statement of fact. Many people hold a different opinion from yours, including Burt Bacharach, even though he did like Aretha's version of "I Say A Little Prayer."
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 ANd many people hold a different opinion from yourself. Burt didn't just like it he thought it was the best interpretation of that song. Aretha has done alot of Dionne's song and she had did a far greater job with them as she does with many of her covers.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha I'm glad you understand that it's an opinion and not a fact now. I'd like to see the actual quote where Bacharach says that he thought Aretha did it better than Dionne. He often talks about how the reason he advanced so far in his writing was because of Dionne's talent. I don't think Dionne could have done "Respect" as well as Aretha, but when Aretha does "Walk On By," she's doing the same thing, walking on ground that Dionne owns.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 He said that he thinks that Aretha's version is the best. After Aretha covers a song, it is hers. And this song is no different. Aretha took it and made it hers.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha I'd still like to see the actual quote, not your paraphrase. I've read a lot of Bacharach interviews and that doesn't sound like him. He LOVED Dionne's voice.
We're talking more than 40 years after the fact, and these songs are still remembered as Dionne Warwick songs, despite all the people who recorded them.If anyone else's versions had been definitive, the songs would be associated with them instead of Dionne.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 If you want to than you go and find it. No one is stopping you. I don't have a single thing to lie about. All i can say is see for yourself. Just because you love someone else voice doesn't mean that someone else can go off and make a version that said better likes best. Like i said there are many Bacharach songs that Dionne originally sung and people have done a better interpretation. Such as Ella Fitzgerald when she interpreted "Alfie".
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@As I said, I did find the quote, and it's not what you claimed. He said Aretha's record was better because of the time changes. His exact words were "It's not about the vocal. It's about the feel."
"Alfie" proves my point. Dionne didn't do the original, but her version was so much better than the earlier ones that the song is identified with her and not Cillia Black or Cher, both of whom sang it in the movie and had hits in their respective countries.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 He stated that he think Aretha's interpretation is better case closed. You are trying to get one in by adding this shit about vocals. This doesn't matter but Aretha's has a better tone than Dionne and but that isn't what makes her interpretation better.

@TheQueenAretha It's not "Shit'" it's what he actually said.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha It's not "shit." It's what he said. If you want to look it up, it was from an NPR interview. The transcript is online. I'm sure he likes Aretha as a singer, but he did say that the reason he preferred her recording of "Prayer" was the feel of the time changes.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 What you stated is shit. Whether you like it or not he likes Aretha's interpretation best there is no way of getting around that!
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha Do you even listen to yourself? When someone-even Burt Bacharach-says something criticizing one of your favorites, you say it's just an opinion, but you present your own opinions as fact.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 My statements can be proven as they were.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha Right. Your OPINIONS can be proved as facts, yet what Burt Bacharach says is just opinion and doesn't matter. It's a pity Bacharach didn't know as much about music as you do. Then he might have written something really good.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 Some of the things i said were not opinion they were facts and they can be proven as such. I never said Burt didn't know more about than i do, what i am saying is Burt is just one man a very brilliant man but his views about Aretha or anyone else interpretation of his song is merely his view.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha "Ella did no such thing as making the song worse"-opinion "Aretha's has a better tone than Dionne"-opinion "Aretha perfected the melody by having her background singers sing the chorus"-opinion Ella's " Alfie" was better than Dionne's-opinion "After Aretha covers a song it is hers"-opinion. So, which are the facts that can be proven?
As you say, Burt is a brilliant man, so I think his opinions are worth considering. After all, he wrote the song the way he did for a reason.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
Burt's opinion won't make that much of a difference on how people fell about the song personally.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha No.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 That i can understand
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha If you're interested. I think it's the way the strings come in. For me, it gave that section a nice lift, but he might think they're signaling the change too obviously. I guess it's normal when you do something and some else does a different version that you like to think "maybe I should have done it that way instead."
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha Ok. I found the quote you're talking about. He does say he preferred Aretha's record. Specifically, he said it was because the changes in the time signiture flowed better in that one than the one he did. I've also heard that he didn't like Aretha's vocals because she wasn't singing the melody, but since I haven't found that quote, I'm not assuming it's true.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 That crap that you heard is bullshit. Aretha perfected the melody by having her backing singer sing the chorus.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha I said I hadn't seen the quote, but it's plausible. It's well-known that Bacharach didn't like people taking liberties with what he wrote. He complained about Love changing the chords to My Little Red Book and he didn't like when Ella Fitzgerald didn't do the 2/4 measure in "I'll Never Fall In Love Again."
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 But who is Burt to do such a thing. He might have written the songs but that does mean someone can't come along and bring new light to the music. Music is about expression and there is no limitation to what is done to music.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha Who is he? He's the man who wrote the songs. He's BURT BACHARACH, one of the most important songwriters of the last 50 years and someone who unquestionably knows music. If he has an opinion about music, it's worth hearing. If he thinks Love or Ella made the songs worse, it's something to consider. I mean, I like both, but I'd never say Bacharach was wrong. Besides, if you'll accept him praising Aretha, it's only fair to accept him criticizing, too.
BlackMonk66 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 I don't care how important he is. He is not god and he doesn't not have say so on the genuis of others. His opinion is just what it is an opinion, he can't not stop someone else from interpreting one of his songs and bringing new light to them. That is what music is about. Burt is just like everyone else, he can be wrong. Ella did no such thing as making the song worse. I don't care if he praise her or not that doesn't change my views.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@BlackMonk66 I agree. Dionne could not have pulled off Respect and nor should she attempt to. The feel is not her. Walk on By is not a soul song. It is a classic, with a simple theme and sounds better sung without vocal embellishments. The texture of the music (the piano-tears) when the words "Walk on By" are sung in the chorus is the only sense of emotion needed. The rest is supposed to indicate she is remaining cool on the exterior in case she runs into the man she loves on the street.

Just like I Say A Little Prayer for You, Dionne's is the classic and better version. Dionne handles the Bacharach/David songs better than all the other ladies out there. She just has a subtle quality to her voice and her ability to handle the key changes are unmatched.
On the flip side Dionne couldn't touch songs like Natural Woman, Chain of Fools, and Respect.
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor I disagree i feel that Aretha's interpretation and phrasing is better as well as it do on Say A Little Prayer For You.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha Of course I would expect that from someone titled "The Queen Aretha," but Bacharach himself said that no one sings his songs better than Dionne.
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor Burt has said that Aretha version of Say A Little Prayer is better than his own. To me it is all about phrasing and Aretha phrasing is 2nd to none. Love Dionne but that is how i feel.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha Ehhh....of course you are an Aretha fan..... he said her version is better than HIS own. Not better than Dionne's. Only Dionne has been able to fully handle the key changes in his songs. Walk On By is Dionne's song, her subtlety is what made her crossover so well. Aretha was always stuck in church/gospel mode and never really reached beyond that sound. People just liked the power in her voice but the colors weren't there. And her phrasing is not a tenth of what Dionne's is today.
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor He was talking about Dionne's version when he said his own. Which is true. What in the world are you talking about "fully handle the key changes in his songs" it is all about interpretation and phrasing and Aretha almost alway does an excellent interpretation that is fanatasic. Newflash! Aretha has more crossover appeal than Dionne. Dionne never has a number one hit, she never had a number album. Aretha was one of three top selling females of her generation. So don't go there.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@dastaylor And Aretha wasn't stuck in gospel. Gospel is the foundation of her interpretation. Gospel is roots but she is more than just gospel and she is more than just a Soul singer. Aretha can sing anything. Aretha has touched the hearts of millions all over the world in ways that Dionne never could. The reason people loved Aretha was because there was no one like her. She was so different from everybody else and her conviction and phrasing was uncomparble. You must be out of your mind.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@dastaylor One thing i don't ever have to worry about is Dionne uping Aretha when it comes to phrasing. One touches Aretha when it comes to phrasing and interpretation. Dionne just doesn't cut it.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha Really? Aretha's phrasing has been sloppy for the last 20 years. She mumbles words together and half of what she sings is unrecognizable. I just saw Dionne again and could understand everything she was singing. Not only do I understand it, I feel it. Aretha just screams and mumbles. Even in her hey day, she really was nothing more than a big voice. She has been given WAY too much credit over the years. She had some great songs and sang them well but there have been better singers
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor For Aretha entire 50+ years in the industry, Aretha has never lost her uncomparble phrasing. Dionne as good as she is can't touch Aretha in terms of phrasing. Aretha's voice has changed but her soul and her gift of interpretation has never left her. To this very day Aretha can still make people feel the same passion and feeling that they did when she was in her prime. Dionne just don't cut it. Her reading are average to say the most. I don't care how well you understood Dionne.......
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@dastaylor she has never been in the same caliber of a singer as Aretha. Aretha is the greatest singer ever. She has has a body of work that proves every single word. Everytime she sings, Aretha display her musicianship and abilty to interpret a song. And please has never screamed. She belts but most importantly she sings. Aretha has proven time and time again that Aretha is more than just a big voice. Aretha has proven herself as a singer. Her body of work can;t be touched. Dionne has never....
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@dastaylor Did anything that compares to what Aretha has done for music. She is the most respected woman in music and the most important musical female of the 20th century along with Ella Fitzgerald. A singer like Aretha comes once in a lifetime. You say she has been give too much credit when in fact Aretha has earned her respect and deserves every praise, award, honor and tribute she gets. She is that damn amazing. There is only one singer that is better than Aretha and that is Ella Fitzgerald.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@dastaylor And Aretha and Ella are so close when it comes to there greatness. Other than that Aretha is the Greatest Singer of All TIme. She has only one peer when it comes to being the Greatest. Dionne is not even a distance away from Aretha.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha lol.....Dionne broke barriers and won records as well. Aretha became more popular, but more popular doesn't always equal better. Madonna is more popular than Aretha, is she better? No. I didn't say Aretha wasn't a good singer but there are other great singers out there who are just as talented or more so and may not have achieved the same recognition. I believe she got lucky and that she is over-hyped. Bacharach wrote the song for Dionne NOT Aretha. It is her song. end of story.
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor Dionne as great as she is can't compare to the singer Aretha is and what Aretha has done for music. You are right more popular doesn't mean better but we are talking about Aretha over her, without a doubt she is better. And Madonna is no where near as respected or has the impact that Aretha has had. There are many great singers out there but Aretha has proven to be the BEST. Her musicaility and interpretive skill set her apart. There is no one better, other than Ella Fitzgerald.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@dastaylor Aretha has nothing to do with anything. Aretha was destine to be as great as she is. A talent like her is only one in a million. You obviously don't know what the hell you are talking about. There is no hype to Aretha, she has proven her greatness. There is nothing she has to do. Her body of work is untouchable and with every chance she greats she displays her genuis. There is a reason why Aretha has had such an impact on music. All you have to do is listen to her.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha Again, being wildly popular doesn't necessarily mean that someone is talented. I am not saying she isn't talented, she most certainly is, I just do not think and there are others out there that think she is as great as everyone makes her out to be. I think there have been more than a few superior singers and song stylists. She is just not everyone's cup of tea......
Every chance she gets she displays her greatness? I have seen her share of bad vocal performances.
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor There is a reason why Aretha gets so much praise and honors. She is an amazing singer. It doesn't matter if those people thinks she isn't as great as but in truth she is the greatest. I know many people who prefer other singers to Aretha but they can't deny that Aretha is the better singer. There is only one singer that is above Aretha as a singer and that is Ella Fitzgerald other than that there is no other person. You might not like her but that doesn't take away that she is.....
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@dastaylor She greatest singer of all time. Aretha has rarely had a bad vocal performance. You obviously don't know a thing about her. Aretha is still showing her greatness with her interpretations. Aretha Franklin is a one in a million singer. Thats that.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha Agree to disagree, I never said that she wasn't a good singer. I just said that she should stick to her own songs. I do not care for her interpretations of other singers songs. Dionne is unique and I don't like Aretha's "gospel," take on her songs. Again it works for Respect, Natural Woman, etc. Not for the Bacharach songs.....
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor Once again you know nothing about Aretha. Aretha has been doing covers her entire career. She is the best at them. What she does is she takes those songs and make it hers. LIke she did with this songs. This is her interpretation and how are you going to agrue about this. She record this in 1964. I am pretty sure you don't know a damn thing about Aretha singing other peoples songs. A great singer has the ability to take any song and make it hers. Dionne is no where near as unique as...
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@dastaylor Aretha her voice to me is ordinary. Aretha doesn't do a gospel take. Half of Aretha's body of work are interpretation of song. Back in the day everybody did them. And a great singer as Ella and Aretha were the best at interpreting those songs. You can tell that you no very little about her. Aretha is more than just Respect. And Aretha has done many Burt Bacharach songs and did them better. Aretha alway made his songs better.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@dastaylor And the her i was talking about is Dionne her voice is very ordinary compared to Aretha.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha In your opinion. Not everyone thinks that way. Aretha has a "louder," voice more powerful maybe but power is not everything. Dionne has a very beautiful voice. Take Sade for example she doesn't have as powerful of a voice but no one would say it is ordinary. You are equating being louder with better..... Aretha can't sing certain songs very well at all..... The Star Spangled Banner for instance or anything that requires subtlety.
dastaylor 1 year ago
@dastaylor It's not an opinion, it is a fact that Aretha is in a superior league of singers. Aretha vocally ability is only one part of what makes Aretha amazing but it isn't the most important part. It is her musicianship. Which she shows everytime she sings. Dionne voice is nice but it is no where near as special as Aretha's. Never has and never will be. I never said a powerful voice makes a great singer in fact it doesn't. Take Billie Holiday she didn't have a great voice what so ever but....
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@dastaylor Billie was an fantastic singer. She barely had any powerful but her interpretive abilities and phrasing set her apart. Also being loud and being powerful or resonate are too different things. Aretha has done a great interpretation of The Star Spangled Banner, don't try to put her in that box, she knows more how to use restrain and she does with everything she does. You don't know shit about Aretha. And it shows with every comment.

@bobo441 For me, Aretha has the best voice of all time. I think Dionne's version of this song is definitive and the best. I do like this version.

Sincerely,
