What is the name of that telescope-thing Kubrick is using at 2:08? I've seen him, Terry Gilliam and David Cronenberg use such. How much do they cost?
In the documentary footage of the locker scene with Jack locked in and Kubrick on floor with viewfinder; (2:39 ) can anyone tell me what is the significance of the TAPE that is glimpsed on the back of Jack's jacket? This tape is two strips vertical and one horizontal on the jacket and another strip on butt area of his jeans!??? The tape was there only during the rehearsal and removed during the actual filming.
@DrRESHES It's just a director's viewfinder, directors offen carry them on film sets to try and decide how they will frame the shot, and with the viewfinder they can see the shot as it will be seen by the lens.
Hey,it's really great to see this kind of documentaries, people!!
This is simply great!!...''The Shining'' is one of my favorite horror films, and still remember when I watched it the day of X'mas 1980 in my hometown.
When will we turn to watch quality movies like this one?...maybe one day...maybe never...the horror films directors nowadays, copy the same visual effects each other...they simply give us bread with the same thing.
This whole scene demonstrates how Kubrik simply used what he had, made up shots and camera angles as the occasion arose, and as Nickolson said, "We just make it up as we go along." I hope Rob Ager is listening.
Hey everybody - I just released my solo album "Mirror Image" that contains ambient songs (and upbeat songs) heavily inspired by Stephen King's novel and movies The Shining, as well as Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. If you're interested you can check out the songs on my youtube page, and links to my myspace page and places to download the full album are on my youtube channel as well :) .
Stephen King signed a non-disclosure agreement to get the rights to do his version 16 years later. He wanted the croquet mallets used as well as the moving topiary that King really brought to the TV version. He chose Steven Weber to play Jack after Wings Co star Tim Daly had tried for the part!
the only reason that people think that Shelley Duvall did a bad job for this is because it just clarifys a lot better how bad her acting is when she is acting with Jack fuckin' Nicholson. No body can do a better job then him, he is the master of the insane acting.

immidiate reaction: let me out of here? Sorry can't do it wouldn't be prudent. diobolical sinister laugh. Is this how they make movies? how many times do the reinact things? Personally I want to be let out of the universe and that also wouldn't be prudent. Watching people stand around like that makes me nervous for I might be somewhere in the corner with a social anxiety dissorder.
Kubrick had similarities with Nicholson, such as the hair, eyebrows and nose. And Duvall had similar wide dark eyes. I wonder if there was something autobiographical in his thinking when he picked them.
Shelley Duvall was a consumate actress. As a woman, she not only got the shaft (as usual) and verbal beat downs from Kuprick, while at the same time getting no respect from anyone who was introduced to what's-his-name. To say otherwise is to have egg on your own face and to say the movie didn't work. It did work. And she was perfect for it. It's always easy to picture your ugly wife in the role, but sorry. She was hot and probably still is.
yz5954, I agree completely! Duvall was every bit as integral to the movie as Jack. Kubrick DID respect her, but knew he had to push her to get what she was there for.
Well the way that she was talking about her health before the clip was over, I assume she is on the ground because of fatigue or something along those lines because of all the stress from movie making.
I love this film, I remember first watching it at my friends house when I was like 9 because she loved horror. I was sat on the sofa eating a cheese sandwhich and absolutely terrified.
I didnt sleep for 2 weeks solid.
But its an awesome film, one of my favourites now. XP
Incidentally, the acting in Eyes Wide Shut was not as good, because apparently Tom Cruise interfered and shut things down after 30 takes. More takes would have been better, giving the actors less control and exposing vulnerabilities. It's rumoured that Kubrick spoke to Lee Ermey saying Eyes Wide Shut had been ruined by Cruise's interference. More takes would have made it dreamlike, with the actors too tired to fully control their performances.
I guess Kubrick wanted the fatigue in the actors to show how the claustrophobia had drained them until it was a battle just for survival, seen most in Duvall, but even in Nicholson, because even though he is mad, you get the impression he is too weak to fight the demons and is compelled to do what he is doing. In the end he runs out of energy and dies.
Stan was definitely a demanding director.......he wore Jack out so much that every night, after shooting, he would just come home, collapse and fall asleep. He also was worked over so hard that he vowed to never work with Kubrick again after this.........and he never did.
It's funny you mention that lurch321, because I think Harrsion Ford had the very same feelings about working with Ridley Scott during the filming of Blade Runner.
So.........Ridley was also a demanding director? Interesting........to be honest, always hated that movie! Wonder how hard he worked over Jodie and Sir Anthony in Silence of the Lambs...........
Ridley didn't direct Silence of the Lambs, Jonathan Demme did. Ridley directed the sequel, Hannibal, and Jodie Foster isn't in that one, Julianne Moore is.
Anyone feel that Shelley should have at least received an Oscar nom. for best actress for this? Thought she was excellent......too bad her career never took off......didn't she have her own show on Showtime or TMC in the 80's for a while? "Shelley Duvall's Tall Tales & Legends" or something like that......
Shelley Duvall is absolutely brilliant but this is down to Kubrick deliberately wearing her down and tiring her out, because she is too exhausted to be phoney hysterical, and she is just genuinely hanging in there, almost collapsing from the strain. 80 takes of each demanding scene.
Yes. I agree. She is normal looking. I'm glad they didn't use a drop dead gorgeous actress. It would have lost effect... As far as Jack is concerned... I do think he's perfect for the role. But I also agree with you. He does have that crazy look in his eye. But that's why he's perfect for the role :-) Have you seen him in "The Witches of Eastwick?" Fab-u-lous:) I do agree to some extent.

shelly duvall is butt ugly, but has a charming personality, the kind of woman that isn't attractive until you talk to her for a while. look at those ears, and teeth!

........and I actually liked the movie version of The Shining MORE than the book! Actually didn't find the book that scary at all! And this is coming from a diehard King fan.
A foolish comment like this only means one thing: you haven't read the book. They are two totally different entities; but both are masterpieces. The book deals with different themes (alcoholism, child abuse, the destruction of a family) altogether. The film is more a tale about a psycho taking his family to a hotel for the winter. In the book, an abusive father, alcoholism, and the supernatural force behind the Overlook all drove Jack to insanity; he wasn't crazy from the start like in the film
I'm coming to your defense.....to a certain extent, Ivan. Agree with your first statement, disagree with your second. King has done much better than The Shining.......this is just one of my not-so-favorite books by him.
by my taste she is more pretty, than any other todays movie star from Hollywood. She is so charming, even today. Her beautyness comes from inside of her.

Family gets job of caretaker
family happy, but danny is a little weird (from our understanding)
then we learn danny has a gift, the shining, which gives people the power to see things other people cannot. family stays.
Father goes crazy, gets cabin fever, and apperently has some of the shining powers.
father trys to kill family.
turns out father has been there before being caretaker.
the end

I'm coming to your defense.....to a certain extent, Ivan. Agree with your first statement, disagree with your second. King has done much better than The Shining.......this is just one of my not-so-favorite books by him.

I love how kubrick sends a steganographic message by "re-enacting" the infamous typing sequence from the film at around 2:00! LOL!! True genius.

Why exactly was Jack wearing a wire? It never explains what's going on.

by my taste she is more pretty, than any other todays movie star from Hollywood. She is so charming, even today. Her beautyness comes from inside of her.

I agree withat that. She is very genuine and a great actress.
