  • Watch John Bonham's " Fool in the Rain" young fellow.

  • impressive! keep up the great work!! :)

  • wadsworth constant applies

  • i agree on the hihats, you should relax that hand a bit more. other then that this was pretty damn great. also, holyshit at 10 years old? you are gonna kick so much ass if you keep this up mate. also what's more: keep learning from the masters, and kick all them rockdrummers in the nuts.

  • You are great! way to go! but your drums sounds awful!

  • @kaiserkarl2 haha thanks :D I now have a DW kit which you can see in the video

'Get Over It - The Poison Berries'

    Matt

  • relax your hands on the high hat, other than that its great :)

  • for a 10 year old this is awsome

    u just miss that feel

cuz groove and funk is all about feel

now its sounds like ur copying a beat

u need to make it ur own beat

not a copy of john bonham or someone else

    understand?

  • nice groove kid, keep at it and just hooooold back

  • Tasty groove, young man! You've got really good touch on those ghost notes. Great drumming influences in your repertoire. You 're not any relation to Nick Mason (Pink Floyd), are you?

  • @mother66 Thanks very much!! I'm not a relation to Nick Mason, but I hope i become like him!!

    Matt

  • Good job kid. It's a tough beat. And you already *are* famous with us. Keep practicing. Cheers.

  • @ascetic43 Thank you very much

    Matt

  • don't you play for nyjo!

  • @jamesdancer73 I did play for NYJO 2 yeah, do you??

    Matt

  • UNREAL!!! Way to go mate! Jeff Porcaro is one of my all time favorites next to Buddy Rich.I wish I could play as good as you when I was 10! I`ll be watching for you on an album in the future!

  • @L1ngP0e Thanks very much, I hope I have got an album out in the future!!

    Matt

  • Holy Ghost notes Batman. Stay in that lane mate and you'll pass many. Guitar centers all over U.S. prove daily.. Jazz / Soul drummers are desperately needed to bring these no-meter-fast -for -30-second-beaters to their senses...Hats Off!

  • @Rikenrocker Thanks very much :D I play lots of different styles of drumming as well.

    Matt

  • The Groove Master is looking down on you and smiling young man. Excellent feel and very good meter. I totally agree with jofujenkins reply that it's awesome to see young players influenced by more than joey jorginsen and travis barker!! Porcaro and Purdie are great ones to hone your chops! Good Luck my friend!!

  • Good drumming little man...keep it up...I like your smile at the end of your demonstration...

  • great stuff young man, keep it up and you shall go far

  • THANK GOD!!!

finally, a younger player who isn't infatuated with playing blast beats or double bass drum patterns at 230 bpm!

you're on the right track, buddy. just keep playing and having fun. i'm sure we'll be hearing from you again some time down the road...

    cheers.

  • i can totally agree with that

  • I'm sixteen and have known the halftime shuffle for almost a year but I'm nowhere near you in groove. Cool stuff, dude!

  • Hey good work kid, keep up the groove!

  • Hi, i'm 14 years old and also trying the purdie shuffle mixed with some backbeats. Gotta say that you're standing a bit further than I. My ghostnotes are all right, just have to fix my accents. I'm glad to see somebody around my age, playing what I can't.

    Good luck.

  • Awesome...Jeff Percaro would be proud of you!I'll be hearing you within à couple of years with you're own band dude.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your comment.

I hope that i will be famous in the future.

    Matt

  • @gratistoch Thats right".... Acented Triplets are a great grove to to master..

    All the best.

    G. Husband.

  • Great! Now start teaching and make some dough, bro!

  • That is amazing. That is a difficult feel.

  • Way to go! You play it better than I do.

  • lol that smile at the end killed me :D

  • nice job kido.

  • Hi from Detroit! Love the Detroit shirt! You're welcome here anytime. Maxwell's new single "Pretty Wings" uses the shuffle. It's most noticeable starting at 3:04.

  • "Pretty Wings" sounds like a new maxi pad.

  • I hope my little boy grows up to be just like you- i'm brainwashing him with Steely Dan drumming and he's only 2 and a half ..lol - keep playing !

  • Nice groove!! You´l be a Great drummer too.

  • Comment removed

  • Matthew Mason is a badass

  • Great drumming!! great personality too! Keep it up!! I'll probably be buying some of your records in the future!!

    Domenic

  • Just cant get near that yet, well done dude.

  • Awesome Job Matthew! Keep it up! That's one of my favorite drum grooves.

  • I think the death cab song your thinking of is called "grapevine fires"

  • year great rhythm

  • sweet boy may you stay sweet soul as you are

  • check out that death cab for cutie tune for a new cat playing the purdie shuffle ... i`m sorry i dont remember the name of it but its really good .. i think it is the current single that is out right now

  • Awesome!!!! I can't believe you're 10 when you played this and it's that good! I can't wait to hear from you in the future... Awesome feel, Tony has nothing on you... Something you can work on is your bass drum, I think it should be a little more defined (either by tuning or playing it harder). Aside from that, beautiful, I loved your ghost notes and hihat especially!

  • I love playing the half time shuffle, I think it's my favorite beat. It's so fat and when "ghost notes" are added it sounds even better. This is good stuff man, keep it up!

  • Hi,

    Yeah it's great!

    Thanks for your comment.

    Matt

  • @sharpasabowlingball I realize your comment here is 1 year old...I am not a big fan of the half-time shuffle without grace/ghost notes...but adding the grace-ghost notes completely changes the feel/sound so that it does not sound like a typical shuffle groove (and for this reason I prefer to call this groove a "triplet groove" rather than a half-time shuffle groove)...

  • @davss5 listen again - the ghost notes are there :)

  • @markmason7 I DID hear your ghost notes (and I appreciate your playing)...in my previous comment, my intended point was that I prefer the ghost noted half-time shuffle more than the non-ghost-noted half-time shuffle ...for my other intended point, the non-ghost noted half-time shuffle may be played with accented right hand strokes (giving a "shuffle" feeling)...but, instead of a "shuffle" triplet, I like the "rolling" feel of an even-sounding triplet that I feel Porcaro/Bonham played...

  • @davss5 thanks man!

  • @markmason7 You're welcome...thanks for your reply...it turns out that (after perusing the comments here) I DID reply ~5 months ago!...so much for my memory...then again, YOU did not remember that I replied ~ 5months ago either!...hehe...

  • @markmason7 I did not know that I had not responded to your comment (even though it seems to be 5 months later!)...anyway, I DID hear the ghost notes here in this video - my comment about the ghostless half-time shuffle was more general...

  • well on your way, keep it up!

  • I lose.

  • You got Jeff

  • great job lad..!

  • Wow, Amazing!

  • I wish I had your accent.

  • this is refreshing, a REAL person who knows how to play music! I am wishing you the very best man and good luck to you in your future.

  • Hi,

Thanks very much for your comment.

    Matt

  • sweet!

  • Wow, that was really good. I could not play that when I was 10 years old so you are on the right path. Stay on it!

    ~Vince

  • nice one. good feel.

  • dude keep up the good work your doing a great job on those ghost notes.

  • Kid, you're awesome! I wish I played 1/5 as good as you do.

  • You have the talent and perfect attitude to be a great drummer.

Don't ever quit, because you WILL make it.

  • Thanks so much for your comment. Good luck.

    Matt Mason

  • Really good

  • keep practicin' because the real one is much faster xD but very good job!!

  • dude!

    oh my god!

keep going down that road of learning to groove, that will get you real far!

  • A 12 year old who understands active listening!

    I'm impressed!

Well done, mate. You're gonna be a super-star if you keep it up!

  • Nice job kid, especially on the ghost notes on the snare. A lot of young drummers (and older ones too) don't get the feel down like you did.

  • Awesome, you remind me of me when I was ten, only more committed, better, more skilled and with superior drums.

Apart from all that, exactly the same.

  • YASSSSSSSSSSSSS! Finally a ten year old who wants to play music.. not F***ing Travis Barker.. You're awesome man! Keep at it and by the time you're Porcaro/Purdie's age you'll be the idol!

  • thats really great! nice work

  • Good job buddy, might wanna tune that snare though.

  • fool in the rain, almost

  • Nicely played, I'm not a drummer but I have plenty of musical background. Sounds like you've got the beat down technically, now just focus on developing "the groove." Well done!

  • very very nice played!!!

  • Very nicely done boy!

  • good work, champ!!

  • Thanks for your comment, please check out all my other videos on youtube. oh and really great all the things you have achieved, brilliant !!!

    Matt

  • amazing, well impressed :D

  • tight as a fishes a**

  • nice ghost notes kid....keep it up- you've got a good feel

  • Wow! Really well done! I prefer the John Bonham version from Fool In The Rain. Have you heard that one? I've been working on that one myself. You can hear just the drums from that song here on Youtube. I highly recommend it. Very inspirational.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your comment,

Yeah I have heard Fool In The Rain but I am not sure that I have heard it with just the drums.

    Thanks for telling me,

    Matt

  • nice playin my friend :)

  • Killer!

  • Great work. Nice feel, really solid.

  • Awesome job dude. Your really solid. I cant even imagine how much your going to rock in 10 years.

  • bloody great ghost notes. keep up the good work. please post a purdie shuffle.

  • nice drumming dude ;)

you're on the right way practicing this stuff slowly! it's groovin'

  • Muy bien chamaco!!!! ahora trata de hacer mas rimshots en el los golpes fuertes y listo.............felicidades

  • You are well on your way to becoming a great drummer :). Awesome accent to lol.

  • Thanks for your comment. I have more videos on youtube please check them out.

    Matt

  • excellent time...right in the pocket of the groove

  • very impressive!

  • Great job!!

  • that was very tight one, you are doing good.

  • 2 things. One......the fact that you got the Porcaro "Rosanna" shuffle 99 percent down automatically ranks you pretty well up there with a lot of other drummers...great job! and Two...the fact that you're laying it down on a Pearl Kit just makes it that much sweeter! KEEP IT UP and WE"LL KEEP WATCHING!

  • that's a key groove to have under your belt little man. keep it up.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your comment.

    Matt

  • keep it up! You'll be a great drummer in a few years!

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your comment.

I am practising a lot to be a great drummer in the future.

    Matt

  • few years my ass, he's better than most right now. there's drummers in bands that can't do the the purdie shuffle!!

  • Sounds great, Matthew! That beat is an essential part of the drummer's toolbox. You play it very well.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your comment,

    Matt

  • Awesome playing Mark!

Check out John Bonham's version of the half time shuffle too, from "Fool In the Rain" by Led Zeppelin. I posted a video showing how to play it if you want to try it!

  • Hi,

    Thanks a lot.

I am Matthew I am 11 years old, Mark is my dad.

I will take a look at "Fool in the Rain" and I will try it.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • EXCELLENT!

  • Very good! Nice work. You got some soul big guy! Keep it up.

  • Sweet you have a great talent. Keep up the hard work and make us old drummers over here in the US proud. Thank you for posting and God Bless.

  • wicked!

  • Funky. Nice stuff dude.

  • Sounding really great man keep it up!

  • By the time you're 18, you could be incredible. Keep the focus on the groove and don't follow the path of fancy 'chops' like so many others do (not that you're doing that here!), although I do know we all need enough 'chops' to be able to interpret the sounds in our head appropriately sometimes.

Good on you little man, that was pretty cool!

  • That was amazing. You got the groove little man.....

  • Listening to you play bought a tear to my eye because you sounded just like Jeff. Jeff would be proud.

  • bless you mate.

  • very good try and but morre fills

    in very good

  • Very very good Job!! congrats!!!

  • do you live in detroit

  • nope, England

  • very good

  • Sounds good. I see the making of a pro.

  • You can ghost or add anything you want, IMO. as long as the hi-hat or whatever you use for that shuffle ostinato is swingin' with the right hand, it's a "shuffle"

  • Now This sounds like rosanna, great!!!!!!!!!

I got to get the bass drum down still

  • great job, kid! keep up the great work!

  • You are a super kid with damn good taste in music...keep it up, I wanna see you in the limelight!

  • Thanks mate

  • good groove, just needs some " haiigh haat" keep on doin what you are doing.

  • Nice work Matthew!!!!! Wow! For 10 years old you are a groove-filled drummin' machine!

Keep it up - see you on the cover of modern drummer in a few years....

  • Man lil guy, keep it up and you will be on tour making big money and getting all the girls!!!!

  • Why couldn't the drummer for Kiss die instead of Jeff Porcaro damn it.

  • lol I would say Ringo but, then I probably get shot.

  • I love it! Very good!! That bass drum has a really nice sound!

  • he has the skills

  • Hey, I've commented about you before ma friend. This to me sounds more like 'fool in the rain' kind of groove. Still think ya great player for ya age, keep it up buddy.Would love to see some of ya other stuff !
