  • This is incredible!! So did the pilot deploy reverse thrust before going into the decent to do the tatical approach?

  • so why not Land?? that would have been the shitnit.!

  • I wanna push the buttons!!! Great video! Thanks for sharing!

  • Amazing stuff! Too bad my 152 doesn't have midair thrust reverse, or spoilers, or a HUD... but I can dive it 15 degrees!

  • Those transparent displays remind me a lot of the displays in Avatar. That's pretty much the only reason I like that movie.

  • This is a great clip, and I thank you as I was part of the team that wrote the HUD software. We never got to see "real" fottage of our work, we just ran ut on test rigs. TheC-17 is a GREAT bird and I would love to see more on-deck film like this. Good work and God bless guys n gals, glad we could of been of help.

  • Outstanding!

  • Wow, thanks for sharing, This is Great!

  • HOLY SHIT They where really diving there!

  • I love flying any plane, but being a passenger in the back of an airliner is sensory deprivation. Riding in that C-17 jump seat coming in over the airfield at 15 degrees nose down. That's flying!

  • Just Perfect!

  • @RangerRuby, I highly doubt they would attempt to land at 220+ Knots.

  • amazing!

  • Did he open up the reversers in-flight?

  • @seoceancrosser likely tactical descent maneuver...

  • @airrace1113 Geeez, is he deploying the TR's? The only aircraft I knew that could do that was the Gulfstream jet used to simulate space shuttle landings for training the astronauts.

  • Is there a parachute drop zone on San Clemente Island?

  • 4:25

for some reason San Clemente Island reminds me of Rahmadi Island from Arma: Combat Operations.

  • Looks like a lot of fun. I was on the first flight of the C-17, and on many of the other firsts (like the first in-flight T/R deploy)

San Clemente was a required first flight alternate airfield(reason we scrubbed the 14 SEP attempt).

  • 0:36 missile launch ?

  • @GtaCd321 I think he was trying to demonstrate the missile warning system. Seconds prior to the alert he was talking about the defense system.

  • San Clemente! :D

  • Awesome footage! I'm glad you got a few quick shots of the SEAL training areas and runway periphery. Excellent!

  • Excellent vid. You did a great job capturing the experience. That is one extraordinary piece of machinery.

  • I don't know anything about the c-17 but I am going to critique you anyway.

  • I watch these guys drop like rocks here at KSUU(Travis AFB)...Fun shit to watch, just wish I could do it in real life instead of X-plane.

  • @motokid032 It's always much scarier in real life lol

  • Push the yoke forward and the houses get bigger.....Pull the throttles back and the houses get bigger faster.

Artificial Horizon???..We don't Need No Stinking Artificial Horizon !!!

    Go Naval Air!

  • C17= big like a bomber but flies like a fighter!

  • you guys missed the approach on purpose.

  • did they use thrus reverse

  • Heh, even the altitude callout sounds like the one from the boeing 717 and the MD-11's

  • The auto disconnect sound sounds like a MD to me ;)

  • San Clemente Island, only way in and out is a long plane ride on a very small plane, it has 4 bowling lanes, a small bar and a store roughly the size of a 7-11. Hope to never go back!

  • I was thinking of joining the Air Force after I graduate from my 4 year university, whats the requirements to fly the C-17? I got 55 hours of experience

  • Absolutely amazing !! You guys are best of the best !! Thanks for sharing this with us the "mortals"!!!

  • for as big of a plane they are...you wouldnt believe what the c17 is capable of. i've seen c17's doing the break in my pattern better than some fighters. awesome video!!

  • it is descending at 6000 fpm...

  • so many buttons!!! XD oh well, nice landing though, i wonder how difficult it is to fly one of these?

  • GREAT video...thx for posting!

  • 0:37 missile launch

  • What is the differnce between a tactical approach/landing and a normal approach/landing?

  • @andyskateboarder Tactical landing is meant to get the aircraft down on to the ground as fast as possible (within limits of course) in order to limit the aircrafts vulnerability to enemy fire. Tactical landings are also applicable for approaches that require taking rough/mountainous terrain into account.

  • @mobius1aic Alright thanks man. I had some idea about wat it is, but I wanted to make sure ;)

  • Was the buffeting from spoilers or reversers?

  • lmao, seeing it so high and the runway so close must make u shit ur pants

  • thanks! great video!

  • Missile Launch!?

  • Christ that's steep lol.

  • In case anyone's wondering, when he zooms in on the multifunction display @ 3:20, you can see the primary flight data display which shows airspeed, altitude, etc. The altitude indication is the vertical scale on the right side. The aircraft's vertical velocity (VV) is displayed directly below that.

  • Wow! Dive of 5800fpm! I hope I get to experience one of these someday. Maybe on an MRT next time I deploy.

  • I thought he was going to do a space shuttle style steep angle landing, Why don't pilots use revers thrust in the air? please someone answer I am not wanting any guesses...any technical experts here?

  • is reverse thrust in mid air even possible???-i heard it would stress the engine as the airflow is stronger than the thrust pushing against it!

  • @CaptainFelixTan1 If it wasn't built to, they wouldn't do it. The '17 is a tough bird.

  • OSU on the headset!!! NICE!!!

  • did he reverse thrust at 1:33!!!!

  • @CaptainFelixTan1 I guess you're right

  • Looks like reverse thurst used for descent?

  • The approach was still executed poorly. Even overshot the runway big time!

even if he wanted he couldnt have made a succesfull landing out of it.

Ah well, we all screw up approaches :D

  • @dutch2505 If you read Skyes9's reply to another similar post, you'll realise they were not aiming to land and had a different visual reference for their approach, there was never any intent to conduct a landing. Go back to Flight SIm.

  • @dutch2505 He was not intending to land. You must have forgot that these are USAF pilots and are trained to do this kind of thing. I'm sure they don't just half hazardly miss approaches my friend. :)

  • @RangerRuby There was no intent to land. We shot a altitude restricted low approach into the airfield. Afterward, flew around the channel islands and then back to March ARB where a different type of tactical approach was shot called the TAC EAST, and finally landed on runway 32.

  • @Skyes9 would you rather fly a fighter than the c-17?

  • @RangerRuby You got served. Flight simulator idiot

  • I would be crapping my pants. I was on a Delta airlines flight that came into Honolulu and they came in hot and high and deployed reverse thrust midair and that was more thrill than i wanted for a life time. A little kid was giggeling and saying do it again. I really felt like a chicken after that.

  • Why is the SKE display on #3 MFD instead of an engine display? Using reverse thrust in flight is way over-rated in utility and it's very abrupt on the airplane (wing fatigue). After all that high sink rate stuff, you fly an overhead pattern so wide it would be an unsat in pilot training. 10,000 feet AGL at 10 miles on a straight-in approach, try that for a challenge. The Anchorage accident shouldn't have happened, arrogant stupid pilots and an innocent loadmaster.

  • I can now see how these aircraft are occasionally pancaked into the runway.

  • Thanks for the Video, I was in the Crash Crew at that airfield in 1967 before being shipped off to Viet Nam aboard the USS Ticonderoga CVA-14.

It was good to see the old NALF & Island again.

  • Fantastic video. Thank you

  • That was too cool!! I can't wait to get home from work so I can see it in Hi Def. Thanks for posting this video.

  • That was pure amazing and is the reason why I want to become a C-17 Pilot!

BTW, I grew up in San Clemente and it would be ironic if I ever had the opportunity to shoot that approach.

  • Fantastic! What a ride! I want to try it!

  • Wow...thats amazing...i only wish civilian visits were allowed...im always flying out of KNUC in Flight simulator...its a truly amazing place...i actually wish i could see the island and its Naval Base for my self. no clue if that will ever happen

  • wait did that computer say "missile launch"? lol

  • San Clemente island is where they do a lot of their SEAL training too. I might be wrong, but I think the structures the guy zooms in on with his camera, are fake structures to practice urban warefare for special ops. Perfect place for that kind of stuff.

  • 5800ft/min of vertical speed

  • @alcobreti wow :O

  • was that low pass flyby, or was that missed approach?

  • @kixick it was a low approach

  • awesome tac descent! how fast were you dropping? 10000 fpm?

why did the "missile launch" annunciation happen? were you over hostile territory? where was this?

  • @thomas997 The pilot was demonstrating the defense features on the aircraft. The rate of descent was not announced but we got down there pretty quick, and it was in a military training area off the coast of California.

  • @Skyes9 You can see a VV of about ~5000 ft/min. At 3:24 you can see VV -6040 and a RA2490. ;) A pretty quick descend! Not even an helicopter in auto does that. :P Thanks for posting.

  • @Skyes9 @ 3:25 VV = -5980

  • @Skyes9 at roughly 3:25, vertical velocity shows -5800 fpm. About a 6k foot per minute descent... at least at that point.

  • @thomas997 at 3:24 the ADI shows a sink rate around 6000 feet per minute right at minimums announcement (MDA = Minimum Decision Altitude). One could guess that this rate was used for the earlier part of the descent too.

  • @Turnex parts of the descent were more than 6000fpm i'm sure. and they don't use a particular rate, its speed on pitch.. use pitch to keep constant airspeed..

  • @thomas997 looks like roughly 5500 to 5800 fpm according to PFD

  • @thomas997 the artificial horiz on the MFD was showing a vertical velocity of -6080 fpm at 3:23

  • @lwc242 thanks, saw the PFD, that's amazing. they were pitching down about 15 degrees maintaining 220-230 knots using reverse thrust. are those ground proximity aurals in the background (e.g - sink rate?)? wow, wow, wow, autothrottles in reverse thrust, that's beast!

  • @thomas997 yeah they can only achieve reverse idle in the air, cant get any more than that until the landing gear gets weight on wheels

  • @thomas997 at 3:25 if you look at the MFD on the right side below the altitude reading which is 2280 feet look for the VV below which should say -5980 I am fairly sure that this is the vsi meaning the this C-17 is decending at 5980 feet per minute

  • @thomas997 According to EFIS almost -6000 fpm

  • @flexairz thanks!

  • What did they do with the throttles at 1:35, thrust reverser?

  • @cnknguyen Correct. They applied thrust reverser mid air to slow the aircraft down as much as possible. That's what caused it to shake, if your on the ground while they do that its a very distinct and cool sound to hear.

  • @Skyes9 Does it have those wing shaped flares like the C-130?

  • @cnknguyen looked like that, but dont think so...

  • how u get a ride? :( hope my jrotc instructor calls march soon..... was this fun?

  • @DuffusAndDuffy I got it via a great guy who is with the 729th, and was it fun??? OF COURSE!! it was the best ride of my life!

  • CHAMPION!!! only way to describe Ralph and this video, need I say more?........I don't think so, mhm mhm.

  • Soooooooooooøooooooo lucky

  • why are they going at a crazy insane drop speed lol .

  • You got a good video. I was wondering if you were ever going to post it. :)

  • @AV8R4HM Thank you!! I had to edit it alot!

  • that was all ba
