This is a great clip, and I thank you as I was part of the team that wrote the HUD software. We never got to see "real" fottage of our work, we just ran ut on test rigs. TheC-17 is a GREAT bird and I would love to see more on-deck film like this. Good work and God bless guys n gals, glad we could of been of help.
I love flying any plane, but being a passenger in the back of an airliner is sensory deprivation. Riding in that C-17 jump seat coming in over the airfield at 15 degrees nose down. That's flying!
@airrace1113 Geeez, is he deploying the TR's? The only aircraft I knew that could do that was the Gulfstream jet used to simulate space shuttle landings for training the astronauts.
San Clemente Island, only way in and out is a long plane ride on a very small plane, it has 4 bowling lanes, a small bar and a store roughly the size of a 7-11. Hope to never go back!
I was thinking of joining the Air Force after I graduate from my 4 year university, whats the requirements to fly the C-17? I got 55 hours of experience
for as big of a plane they are...you wouldnt believe what the c17 is capable of. i've seen c17's doing the break in my pattern better than some fighters. awesome video!!
@andyskateboarder Tactical landing is meant to get the aircraft down on to the ground as fast as possible (within limits of course) in order to limit the aircrafts vulnerability to enemy fire. Tactical landings are also applicable for approaches that require taking rough/mountainous terrain into account.
In case anyone's wondering, when he zooms in on the multifunction display @ 3:20, you can see the primary flight data display which shows airspeed, altitude, etc. The altitude indication is the vertical scale on the right side. The aircraft's vertical velocity (VV) is displayed directly below that.
I thought he was going to do a space shuttle style steep angle landing, Why don't pilots use revers thrust in the air? please someone answer I am not wanting any guesses...any technical experts here?
@dutch2505 If you read Skyes9's reply to another similar post, you'll realise they were not aiming to land and had a different visual reference for their approach, there was never any intent to conduct a landing. Go back to Flight SIm.
@dutch2505 He was not intending to land. You must have forgot that these are USAF pilots and are trained to do this kind of thing. I'm sure they don't just half hazardly miss approaches my friend. :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
One of the pilot said "This is how we survive in Iraq & Afghanistan". Does he survive by not landing? It looks to me like he was attempting to land but let himself stay too high on the approch, doinked it up, then had to wave it off. Good judgement. Poor technique.
@RangerRuby There was no intent to land. We shot a altitude restricted low approach into the airfield. Afterward, flew around the channel islands and then back to March ARB where a different type of tactical approach was shot called the TAC EAST, and finally landed on runway 32.
I would be crapping my pants. I was on a Delta airlines flight that came into Honolulu and they came in hot and high and deployed reverse thrust midair and that was more thrill than i wanted for a life time. A little kid was giggeling and saying do it again. I really felt like a chicken after that.
Why is the SKE display on #3 MFD instead of an engine display? Using reverse thrust in flight is way over-rated in utility and it's very abrupt on the airplane (wing fatigue). After all that high sink rate stuff, you fly an overhead pattern so wide it would be an unsat in pilot training. 10,000 feet AGL at 10 miles on a straight-in approach, try that for a challenge. The Anchorage accident shouldn't have happened, arrogant stupid pilots and an innocent loadmaster.
Wow...thats amazing...i only wish civilian visits were allowed...im always flying out of KNUC in Flight simulator...its a truly amazing place...i actually wish i could see the island and its Naval Base for my self. no clue if that will ever happen
San Clemente island is where they do a lot of their SEAL training too. I might be wrong, but I think the structures the guy zooms in on with his camera, are fake structures to practice urban warefare for special ops. Perfect place for that kind of stuff.
@thomas997 The pilot was demonstrating the defense features on the aircraft. The rate of descent was not announced but we got down there pretty quick, and it was in a military training area off the coast of California.
@Skyes9 You can see a VV of about ~5000 ft/min. At 3:24 you can see VV -6040 and a RA2490. ;) A pretty quick descend! Not even an helicopter in auto does that. :P Thanks for posting.
@thomas997 at 3:24 the ADI shows a sink rate around 6000 feet per minute right at minimums announcement (MDA = Minimum Decision Altitude). One could guess that this rate was used for the earlier part of the descent too.
@Turnex parts of the descent were more than 6000fpm i'm sure. and they don't use a particular rate, its speed on pitch.. use pitch to keep constant airspeed..
@lwc242 thanks, saw the PFD, that's amazing. they were pitching down about 15 degrees maintaining 220-230 knots using reverse thrust. are those ground proximity aurals in the background (e.g - sink rate?)? wow, wow, wow, autothrottles in reverse thrust, that's beast!
@thomas997 at 3:25 if you look at the MFD on the right side below the altitude reading which is 2280 feet look for the VV below which should say -5980 I am fairly sure that this is the vsi meaning the this C-17 is decending at 5980 feet per minute
@cnknguyen Correct. They applied thrust reverser mid air to slow the aircraft down as much as possible. That's what caused it to shake, if your on the ground while they do that its a very distinct and cool sound to hear.

for some reason San Clemente Island reminds me of Rahmadi Island from Arma: Combat Operations.

Looks like a lot of fun. I was on the first flight of the C-17, and on many of the other firsts (like the first in-flight T/R deploy)
San Clemente was a required first flight alternate airfield(reason we scrubbed the 14 SEP attempt).
