While the Russian navy minimized its fleets since 1990 due to economical distress, it has been on a rebound since roughly 2002. Russians are focusing on submarines, and have just rolled out Borei class sub, Yasen class (world's most modern), and a diesel Lada class sub. They are also rolling out considerable amounts of frigates and corvettes. Russian technology, especially missile and radar is the best in the world, so they don't really need as many surface ships as one may imagine.

What I mean is, Russia lost most of it's naval capacity when Ukraine left the Soviet Union after the collapse. It took the Sevastopol shipyard and many other ports and that is why Russia leases the port. Russia then lost the Baikonaur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan which was responsible for Nuclear launches, Space Vehicle launches etc...
So in essence, Russia lost some of it's most important infrastructure and so they don't trust Ukraine and Kazakhstan anymore. They need to build again IN Russia.

Before bullshitting, you should have done some research. Now listen and learn. 1st, BGM-109 is not anti-ship missile. Its terminal guidance is TERCOM and DSMAC, which can NO WAY track a ship. In my opinion its impossible to compare Russian Navy vs US Navy. US navy is an offensive navy. In one step, it can bring 1000+ aircraft, nearly 100.000 troops, 1000+ armored units, and sufficient SAM support and C3I facilities to anywhere to the world. Russian Navy (despite what people want to believe) is a defensive Navy. It gets air support from its nearby airports. Should any one approaches, an Oscar submarine or a Kirov cruiser is capable of sinking entire carrier group by itself alone.
I don't know why Russians deny it either... Even Pravda, RIA Novosti and a bunch of other newspapers themselves say unless Russia modernizes, it's Navy will be 80% useless by 2020.

The problem is, no launch center in Russia can match the Baikonaur Cosmodrome and this is why even in 2008, Russia test launched an SS-18 ICBM from the cosmodrome.

What I mean is, Russia lost most of it's naval capacity when Ukraine left the Soviet Union after the collapse. It took the Sevastopol shipyard and many other ports and that is why Russia leases the port. Russia then lost the Baikonaur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan which was responsible for Nuclear launches, Space Vehicle launches etc...
So in essence, Russia lost some of it's most important infrastructure and so they don't trust Ukraine and Kazakhstan anymore. They need to build again IN Russia.

In terms of TOTAL military power, Russia is still the 2nd most dominant force in the world and it's nuclear arsenal is still superior to the US. However, it's power projection is severely limited beyond the northern arctic or crimean sea. The Russian navy has fallen behind the French, English and Germans all of which possess some of the newest and modern carriers and subs.
Russia needs to build a large shipyard fast since it lost its biggest to the Ukraine.

Uhhh...they have 342 warships and submarines total active in Northern, Pacific, Baltic and Caspian flotillas. They are now riding the seas in the middle east, eastern Europe, South America, Pacific ocean, Atlantic ocean, African coasts and just bought out 4 Mistral class carriers. They plan and have started building 40 stealth class frigates and corvettes and 20 new nuclear subs as well as another batch of Lada class subs. 10 years ago you would've been right but not today.

There are 233 active ships. We bought 1 carrier and it hasn't been transported yet, 10 new subs, none of which have arrived yet, 15 frigates 2 have arrived, you forgot to mention the 15 corvettes of which 4 have already been delivered. I never said anything about numbers, the Russian fleet is becoming better but everything good in the Soviet fleet that Russia received is now scrap metal. A fleet that once made the world shake in fear is now half a force that's leasing territory for naval bases.

No, Russia has 2nd biggest navy in the world in terms of ship number. Britain has a small navy now, 9 destroyers, 15 frigates and 2 light carriers which only carry 20 aircraft each, many of them helicopters.

Russian ships are more heavily armed compared to their western counterparts. Ie the russian carrier carries long range anti-ship missiles and much else. The sovremeny destroyers are armed to the teeth, and the kirov's, well they are arsenal ships.

Wrong. 1-You are talking as if Britains navy is brand new, excluding the one Type 45, all your destroyers dates back to 1970 as old as kara class. Sovremenny and Udaloy classes are first launched in 1976 and 1980 respectively. 2- Royal navy has 2 carriers (not 3) which weighs 20700 tons. A single Kirov cruiser weigh 28800 tons, and Kuznetsov carrier weigh 67500 tons. Unlike Invincible, Kuznetsov is capable of carrying 24 *heavy* fighters, each carry 8 tons of ordnance to twice range of Harriers.

You will find yourself that *current* Russian navy is LARGER than the sum of total tonnage of Britain, France and Italy. In terms of size British navy is 4th behind US, Russia, China. In terms of capability, its 3rd IMO. You have better landing capabilities than Russians, but Russian Navy pack a lot more firepower.

@DarthCoors No they couldn't... War is more than just troops. The US still maintains a 5 to 1 ratio in naval and air forces with Russia. Not to mention the USA has significantly better satellite surveillance at the moment.
Right now would be the best time to strike Russia for the US because they have troops and support bases in the Mid-East and Asia.
Russia needs to modernize otherwise by 2020, upto 65% of it's military will be obsolete.

no, not 5 to 1 for airforces. The actual number is less than 2 to 1 for fighters 1 to 1.5 for bombers (yes Russians still have more strategic bombers than US). It is true Russian navy can never match the US navy. But Russian Army has something like 24000 tanks 26000 IFVs 6000 self propelled artilleries and 3300 MBRLs. That is something unmatchable too.

Before bullshitting, you should have done some research. Now listen and learn. 1st, BGM-109 is not anti-ship missile. Its terminal guidance is TERCOM and DSMAC, which can NO WAY track a ship. It did have an anti-ship variant, but withdrawn in 1994-5 and missiles converted to TLAM version. 2nd, only Flight 1 Burkes carry 4x harpoons (not 8). Of 56 burkes, only 34 carry CIWS. 3rd, having an ESM suite and chaff dispanser does not make a ship ASuW capable.

In my opinion its impossible to compare Russian Navy vs US Navy. US navy is an offensive navy. In one step, it can bring 1000+ aircraft, nearly 100.000 troops, 1000+ armored units, and sufficient SAM support and C3I facilities to anywhere to the world. Russian Navy (despite what people want to believe) is a defensive Navy. It gets air support from its nearby airports. Should any one approaches, an Oscar submarine or a Kirov cruiser is capable of sinking entire carrier group by itself alone.

I mean the Russian's no longer even have a shipyard meant to build Carriers and cruisers anymore. The one they used as part of the USSR is in Mykolayiv, Ukraine.
Even rocket launch sites are done in Kazakhstan, and the Black Sea Fleet is based in Crimea near Ukraine.

Don't get me wrong, I like Russia and in the 1980's was the DOMINANT military force in the world. However, it has severely slipped to where they are now buying ships from France. Keep in mind the sevastopol shipyard and shipbuilding was in Ukraine so it's hard. However, Russia is resurgent and it will be back.

@mattmatt115 Actually from 1955 to 1991, Baikonaur was the primary launch center for liquid fueled ballistic missiles and ICBM's.
After Kazakhstan became an independent state, Russia was forced to do such testing elsewhere because they didn't want Kazakhstan to know what they were testing or the US to find out.
The problem is, no launch center in Russia can match the Baikonaur Cosmodrome and this is why even in 2008, Russia test launched an SS-18 ICBM from the cosmodrome.

Ukraine would adopt the Euro currency and it's economy would skyrocket. @gazakind Stalin is the only reason you morons even survived World War 2... His ruthless tactics and ability to singlehandedly create the soviet industrial complex is what defeated the Germans. Not even Hitler could have though Stalin would mobilize so many troops or start creating tanks.
Stalin is also the reason the Soviet Union remained so strong early on. Only after him did it go down. Don't get me wrong, Stalin was a ruthless dictator who slaughtered millions, but he made the USSR...

@gazakind How old are you man? The reason they did not invade Russia was because they did not need to when the Soviet Union collapsed. Where are your brains? The US is is the sole superpower in the world with an economy nearly 14 times bigger than Russia. Even if Russia wanted a war, it could never afford one with the US and it would bankrupt the economy.
As for invading countries, look no further than the Soviets in Afghanistan themselves. Quit living in the 1980's and wake up.

@2009zigi I'm not American so don't call me a "cowboy"... America would dare to attack an ICBM armed power because it knows that armed power will not fire it's ICBM's because it would result in both countries being destroyed :)
That's why those ICBM's will sit in their silo's forever. US does not invade North Korea because it sees no reason to. Why should the US waste soldiers and money? The Russians have provided North Korea with most of their military in history, they should solve it.

@Canadarm123 Your logic is flawed. Someone who is attacked would surely use ALL of it's weapons to defend itself. No matter if it would mean the end for both. For the attcked side it's still a better deal then be the only one destroyed. But it doesn't matter really because i don't see america having the guts to go against a bigger force. You didn't dare against the soviets, you didn't dare even against the chinesse when they suplied and backed north koreans in the korea war as the vietcong.

@2009zigi It's obvious you know little about war... No modern nation will ever go into total defeat or use all weapons at it's disposal.
And I'm not american either.
As for your laughable comments on the Soviets or the North koreans... America had already drawn up plans to nuke China and North Korea during the korean war. Read up on it. The reason they didn't is because they didn't want to kill tens of millions of people. Also, the same could be said about the soviets against the US.

@Canadarm123 I don't know about war? What's is there to know about it? BTW I had my cup of war even if it lasted only ten days.
The americans didn't use their nukes on the chineese and north korea because most other nations would probably stop support the US and some would even declare war on it. Back then, the US didn't have an arsenal big enough to settle things on nukes alone. Today the situation is a lot more complicated for america. Unless the US is on a suicide trip.

Let's say South korea decides to attack the North, well surely, the US will join the fray. As will Japan's navy. China, not wanting to let america win, will provide arms and support, maybe even troops again. Let's say the US pacific naval fleet arrives and bombards Chinese boats and troops providing support near Pyongyang, do you think China will nuke the US? Most likely, they will either arrange for a surrender, cease-fire, armistice. This is war. Did Russia nuke Georgia?

@Canadarm123 As long the war isn't fought on american soil, the US will play the big honcho. But even then only as long as it can support it politicaly as financialy as militaristic. Waging war against china over the pacific against a land based super power is a futile think and the us knows it. that's why the US wants China drive financialy into ruin and contrarevolution. The US knows that it can't win against China on Chinas soil. There is no way. The same goes for Russia.
