Gaelic sounds so beautifully... it's such a shame that it's so neglected and that a lot of people hardly know that English is not the only language spoken in the British Islands... Long live Gaelic! hugs from Italy.
Yes, quite clearly the heart of American Bluegrass and Country...hear O hear; how my ears relish the sounds...and my heart shouts with joy at the crystal clear Love that fills the airs here and there...God Bless the Clans and the Old and Young who pass it on...push harder in these times. Pray that it continues to sing and play for all who love it ... for all who need it. Lest we forget and fade...God Help Us remember...God Help Us reach into tomorrow...in these times.
I met julie July 31st.. AT THE 2009 GATHERING OF THE CLANS IN EDINBUROUGH and i will tell you this my friends.. She is possibly the most loveliest and most beautiful of all scottish maidens i've ever had the privledge.. NAY THE PLEASURE meeting. Her music is great over the computer.. BUT LIVE! i couldnt even stress how great it truly was. God bless her and our wonderful heritage! I pray the day that awaits when she finally makes it to the states...
Because not many people are familiar with a musician who sings in a language only 1% of the Scottish people speak? My guess, at least. Pity, because it is a beautiful song, sung by an amazing singer.
If you look up the title on Google, the lyrics are indeed available (with English translations for those not fortunate enough to understand Gaelic). Try it -- you may be even able to follow along!
Oh, I have her CDs, which have the lyrics and translations included. I love singing along with Julie's songs...even though I can't carry a tune in a bucket! What I meant by my previous post is that she isn't exactly mainstream, so most people are never even exposed to her music and don't know who she is...otherwise I'm sure a lot more people would be watching this video!
KNQuail and pilgerman -- I agree very few speak any form of gaelic (myself included). But don't the voice, cadence, melodies, harmonies, etc attract listeners as much as the literal meaning of a songs narrative? I can always get a translation of the words in a song but it's the other qualities that are the essence of these performances. Gregorian chants hit me the exact same way. I listen to them over and over and read the translations in the liner notes!
Oh, I agree that her voice, cadence, melodies, etc are enough to keep me (and probably countless others!) listening...the trouble is just discovering her! I'm sure many people would love her, but how many ever hear her music? I found out about Julie by accident...I was looking for Cara Dillon's TS 3 performances and just happened to come across one of Julie's as well. If not for that, I probably wouldn't even know who she is today!
@pilgerman your point is harsh, yet it does serve as an important litmus test. Lots of folkies do not challenge their listening ears. Listening to Irish folk and other wondrous world folk music adds to one's appreciation of music and sense of culture.
@solariis888 nice one brother, have you ever tried wing tzun? awesome!! my best mate is a black belt in kenpo, and now a black belt in wing tzun, good luck with your training, and isnt julie awesome!!
Random images of the Highlands and Islands? All due respect, but the lyrics could have been better served with relevant images. (Beautiful, though, isn't it? Tapadh leibh!)
sweet, makes even an old stony heart feel warm.

My God, whose stunning watercolors are those? What bold simple captures of the light they are, and how perfect with the music. Please tell?

Scots Gaidhlig, (say Gah-lic softly!) and Irish Gaelige, that should be, but I agree with everything else!

Gaelic is a marginal language and the beauty of it only appeals to those whith taste. Most people on this earth are not very bright. Sad but true.

Hey, I understand not a syllable of this language, but I listen to the genre constantly. It is some of the most beautiful music on the planet.

@pilgerman Speaking of unintelligent people, who are you to marginalize the Gaels? Don't you know there is a Gaeliege revival on the way?
