  • Using Jiu-Jitsu rules and mindset at a Judo tournament. Classy.

  • @Mudanch33 I noticed that. I was wondering why they didn't call ippon sooner.

  • I´m a shodan in judo, been practicing judo since I was 8, now I´m 27... I`ve won a jujitsu championship, and i barely practice jujitsu.

This doesn`t mean anything. Judo is a style of jujutsu, in case you didn´t know, All of the methods taught by jujutsu schools nowadays were made by Kano, judo´s founder.

The real difference is made by the competitor, and BJ is a great one.

  • I... I think the fact that this is BJ Penn already skews the data here.

Plus, despite what people wanna think being strong and in generally great shape is always gonna be helpful in martial arts. A decent foundation in the basics (and Judo and BJJ come from the same origins so their 'basics' are remarkably similar) and awesome physical abilities and you can do pretty awesomely for yourself.

  • 1:33 Man, my Sensei would have killed me if I walked around like that.

  • what a misleading intro. bj penn was NOT a bjj white belt at the time. he is wearing a JUDO white belt.

  • Nice Move

  • they changed the rules in judo so this can not happen so easy anymore haha

  • this is not just one judoko.... the guy in the end appears to have a different haircut that the guy in the beginning. it appears to me, THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO JUDOKA HERE.

  • U guys are wrong. BJ was a white belt in Judo but not in BJJ at this time.

  • You know whats funny..

BJ Pen - beast at BJJ

and killing Judo players who sucks at newaza.

  • @OVERCAPITALIZE judo players should totally go into a bjj tourny and win based on throws, i know people who've done that!

  • @shangss I know and seen it happen, once they hit the ground, they stagger back up and made the match standing, one time they made a ref made, so they made them start on their knees lolol

  • @OVERCAPITALIZE LOL

  • @OVERCAPITALIZE have u seen this?

    watch?v=3XbWNSuF4VI&feature=related

  • I am certain I have read that BJ was actually a BJJ purple at this time, and that he wore a judo white belt out of respect since he holds no rank in that art.

  • @theferguson Thats what i thought he would do, wear a judo gi and belt instead of a BJJ one..

  • @bassplayer18a7x8 As far as I know, they are, unless it's a Jujutsu tournament or a BJJ tournament with a judo fighter in there, but olympic and state-sanctioned judo tournaments prohibit any type of shooting as a means of defeating your opponent.

  • Unless this is an unofficial Judo tournament, BJ should've been disqualified for doing that double-leg.

  • You can clearly hear a dude shout "BJ" for anyone who thinks this isn't him ;)

  • Judo and BJJ are very similar. So much so that this is an embarrassment on BJ's part. A world class BJJ fighter defeating a local judoka WOW! I'm so impressed. This became a show of ego wrapped in a game of ranking.

  • @PaintsvilleLL hahahahaahaha i 100% agree with you

  • Take it for what its worth. It’s not the style, it’s the fighter. It has never been nor will it ever be about the style. People who don’t do martial arts get so wrapped up in this style vs. that style or he is this rank or that. Many judoka have beaten various MMA fighters and vice versa. Focus on what matters - the skill of the fighter not the style

  • haha bjs a professional and has had a very very succesful career so you shouldnt be judging judo by this video haha

  • Don;t forget that BJ penns father did Judo so BJ penn obviously knew what to expect. The other guy probably wasn't familiar with BJJ. Lets not forget that BJ penn is one of the most naturally gifted grapplers in the history of the sport.

  • Judo rules, you cannot pull guard, obviously this was some sort of free style grappling

  • @ticosexy22 well then Judo is obviously flawed and is incomplete.

  • @TanMMA ur an idiot shut up

  • @ticosexy22 he attempted tomoe nage first. legal in judo.

  • when he takes the back at 4:21 ??? how?

  • lol bj doesn't know when to bow, you can tell he hasn't played judo before.

  • ya that is kinda hard to believe that any white belt could beat any black belt in judo at his own game.....but ive seen some good bjj white belts before and a few shitty judo black belts....and it is BJ Penn.. still hard to believe.. but no they would give that other guy a black belt, it would be red or a red stipe on the back of the belt

  • Sry, more BJJ bull shit! I train with judoka who compete. You cant have a white belt or Ikyu in a match with a Shodan! Yet again as I've posted before, were, when and what certification from USJF/USJA did this "Judo competition" have. Simply embarrassing for BJJ's credibility!

  • @CFgroup1 Yeah, but this is probably just a shiai between two schools. Also in competition, any kyu or dan is allowed to wear white belt.

  • @CFgroup1 Actually more embarrassing for Judo, considering he got beat by a White belt of a different discipline.

  • any good wrestler would beat the crap out of these two guys at the same time.

  • @chingon711 the "white belt" here is BJ penn. the former light weight and welter weight champion in the ufc. wrestlers weakness are jujitsu fighters with submission and transitioning unless the wrestler is also a black belt in jujitsu then we could talk. BJ,"white belt" here is actually Black belt in brasilian jujitsu competing in a black belt judo tournament. and has a former background in high school and college wrestling. wrestlers with great calibur grappling do good in their own game only.

  • I'm new to Judo. Is this like wrestling if you get too close to the edge of the mat will the referee tell you to "break" and then you stand up and go to the starting positions?

  • D E S T R U I N D O OS P R E T A S - BJ PEEEEEN, DOIIDÃOOO okasokdaos

  • wow, BJ is good at newaza

  • I cant believe a black-belt continues to turtle up and go on his stomach... This is ridiculous

  • @newjudoka Apparently you ARE new to Judo...... Turtle is a good defense using Judo rules. If you can't get into newaza in 5 sec (supposed to be 5, but is usually 2 or 3) you're stood back up. Standing up gives another chance to win by Ippon.

  • This was a very special judo torn. A newaza one.

  • Too bad BJ doesn't utilize his JJ in this way when he fights in MMA. Dude never goes for subs anymore

  • AND YOUR POINT IS

  • @mountainmanrab

    BJJ > Judo

In a Judo competition none the less!!

  • bj penn also beat a blue belt in jiu jitsu, which is also never supposed to happen. he got his black belt and was world champion 3 years in! amazing for any martial art, but in jiu jitsu it takes average 10 years to get a black belt! lets cut the judoka some slack

  • @marsy91 i agree that its not the judoka at fault, penn is a freak of nature. white belts tap blue belts often in bjj though

  • Ive seen better from 5 yr olds and if that was a black belt believe me you are shit i didnt know argos was giving belts away now it says "this is great" what a joke

  • haha BJ is gassed after 30 seconds.

  • You can't do this anymore in Judo, you can't grab legs anymore. Probably cos of Sambo and Bjj guys like to attack the legs a lot. I like any form of grappling from Jiu-jitsu though. Although I like the old Judo more where guys train for real fights not to please spectators. If a Bjj guy can't take a Judo guy down, Judo guy wins.

  • @rommelcs79 yeah, like they find judo, especially in the olympics, they find it too much like wrestling. so they came up with these new rules where u cant go straight for the legs like double leg takedown

  • @rommelcs79

LOL@judo changing its rules because it was getting dominated by BJJ/Sambo!!!!!

  • I can't believe it ! is it rue, is that him ?

  • Btw, bj penn if def not a bjj white belt at this point.

  • @MMAoracle This is BJ competing in Judo where he is a white belt. He is probably black in BJJ at this point though.

  • yeah this isn't a true judo match, your not allowed to shoot for takedowns and such in Judo.

  • @squitai that rule is only a couple months old.

  • @squitai You were, before they changed the rules to keep wrestlers etc from beating them at their own comps

  • there is no way this guy is a black belt in judo and if so i would love to see his competition videos. no fundamentals!!!

  • if the guy wearing a black belt is really a black belt, than I am a 10th dan red belt in Judo (4th one in the world). This is pathetic... this black belt is not a true black belt. I've seen blue belt Judokas throw purple & brown belt BJJ players like rag dolls.

Probably bought the black belt on eBay or something.

  • Damn.... Penn's Dominating that black belt like nothing.

  • BJ had a crazy move around 4:15. It looked like he went for a kubinagee, and then when the black belt hopped off BJ just hopped on his back and choked him while taking him down at the same time. Unbelievable.

  • brazialian jiu jitsu is actually judo, but modern judo competitions have rules that leave the ground game underdeveloped, as a result, generally, a judo black belt cannot match a blue belt on the ground (second belt) but judokas learn very fast

  • @marsy91 BJJ is not Judo but both share their origins in Japanese Jiu Jitsu.

  • @19thaman79 the gracies were taught judo or jiu -do at the time, the non japanese world called it jiu jitsu cause they didn't know the difference

  • this is judo, you dont get shido's in bjj and the ref called mate and hajime during the fight. BUT there isnt a whole lot of Judo being done

  • I was thinking of entering some Judo tournaments to work more on take downs. I wrestled for 10 years growing up, but need more throws. Is it pretty common for JJ guys to enter Judo tournaments? I didn't know ya can shoot in for a take down in Judo.

  • @AmericanFenian Im not sure if its common for bjj guys to go to shiai but u cant grab anything below the waist unless its a counter, so u cant do a double leg or jump to guard.

  • Cool song/video combination. Thanks for posting this! This is old school fun.

  • that is jui jistu ,,,not judo

  • @keshka53 : You know Jiu Jitsu is derived from the Judo techniques, right. They are so similar it's not even funny. Judo aims more for trips/throws into a submission while Jiu jitsu is aimed towards the ground fighting aspect. (IE from the guard, mount, side mount, whatever)

Point being, I'm sure you have no personal accountablility on the subject..... it's obvious.

  • @275Crimson man ,,,why u r taking the comment so personal ,,i ididnt mean any disrespect for anybody,,,,,anyway I dont want to go in details of the origin of each game,,,,,but the game they are playing in this video is obvious that is jui jistu game......it's not judo at all......and say hiii for ur personal accountablilty ,,hehe

  • @keshka53 Judo chop.

  • ....and they use different coloured belts in Judo to distinguish the players (white and blue usually). Both of these will be of a similar rank.

  • whats dis song called?

    plz reply honkbag

  • whats dis song called?

  • that doesnt even look like bj....but w/e

  • BJ if that is BJ coulda been a black belt there. I dont know about Judo but in BJJ comp if Both competiors have white Gi's and white belts one gets a RED belt so judges dont get confused. DOESNT Meen the guy with the redbelt is a master.. I Just dont SEE ANY WhITE BELT Dominating BLACK BT LEVEL JUDOKA LkE THAT.....

  • @cobraC510 If you watch closely, you will see that its not a true judo match.

  • @cobraC510 im pretty sure i remember hearing the other dude is a blue belt

  • @joeyp978 there is a bunch of different dudes.

  • and BJJ is fine in a street fight ASSUMING its 1v1 but thats not usually the case. if you locked something up from the bottom or even top position its likely one of his friends will soccer kick or stomp you in the head. Anyway on another note I really like Frankie Edgar but god damn I also feel very sorry for him. Hes gonna get his head spun around

  • heh BJ is an animal. 17 years old and clowning a judo blackbelt. its pretty well documented though that jits guys work over judo guys in grappling unless the judo guy also happens to have a sambo base like fedor. No 155 pounder stands a chance and outside of Greasy Pierre I don't think any 170 pounders do either.

  • The other guy isn't a black belt. In most JiuJitsu or Judo tournaments, if both competitiors are white belts one gets a red belt

  • Comment removed

  • @The4915 Yes, the man BJ Penn is fighting is a "black belt". Thats why he's wearing a black belt. I know it's a tough one to figure out. What jiu jitsu tournaments have you competed in? "In most jiu jitsu tournaments competitors are white belts" looking to earn the next belt class? Really? You're definitely a sideliner, just talking.

  • @275Crimson LMFAO. learn to read, bro

  • @The4915 Regarding what, "bro"? I assume you're talking about some caption I obviously missed, but hate to tell you that half of the things you read on youtube aren't correct. Sorry to ruin that for you.

  • @Msmaizie0704

What are you going on about!? Why do they need a sambo base - they have virtually all moves available to the BJJ practitioner. Yes some may be banned in COMPETITION and some may not pay enough attention to the ground game but that is the individual. Go and look at some olympic Judo and watch the superior grip and pin of the Judoka and pay attention to how quick they move into submission.

  • ayye does anyone know how old he is here?

  • if u pull guard isn't that ippon for the opponent?

  • BJ is the best allround leightweight fighter on the planet!

and in this fight he is winner from the first second, so watch again or shut the fuck up!

  • 5:06 to 5:12 is my favorite part.

  • BJ would not have been able to do most of the takedowns he did in this video under the new judo rules in effect this year. Virtually all direct leg grabs have been banned in judo tournaments now.

  • doesn't even set up shots. wonderful

  • HE'S INSAAAAAANNE

  • Iam a big fan of Bj penn but he only use bjj moves in this fight, and his very good at that but stil he isnt better then that other dude in judo.

Saw some dude comment that its easy to reach blackbelt in judo, thats bullshit.

  • @H0ttan I've been wanting to take up judo for a year or so but am not so sure if I want to now that I've found out that Judo doesn't have armbars, chokes or setups and reversals of any kind.

  • Judo has beautiful throws. It depends on what you what to use it for(competition or self defense). I remember i got into a self defense situation. With just a basic 0 Goshi(hip throw) followed up with a foot stomp i ended the threat.

  • Reading up on Judo tonight after watching this video, I noticed that every attempted lock and choke he was utilizing in this video is in Judo Ne Waza textbooks with Japanese names as opposed to what I'd call them in English. This means he was indeed using good Judo for the whole video. Do you guys not train Ne Waza at your dojo?

  • Of course I train Ne-Waza and its not unusual that i win my fights in Ne-waza but BJ dosent even try to make a throw. I havent said that he isnt using judo but a experienced judoka wouldnt fight like this.

  • How many throws do you need to know to get your white belt in Judo normally? I've only really watched Judo in the Olympics so far and I did see a lot of matches like this without throws. In a lot of the recent matches I watched, people were dragging each other to the ground

  • @ H0ttan

What did you just write?? Bj doesnt even try to make a throw?

Did you miss that he throws his opponents like 4-5 times, the last throw was an immidiate ippon!!!

What video did you watch dude? or are you on drugs maybe??

  • @H0ttan

He does try to make a throw, but once he realizes he can't get it he jumps and gets his back.

  • PS this was directed at hottan, not you ramrod

  • you sound like one of those karate masters on self defense videos haha.

  • I'm far from a Karate master. Just studied what truly works in the streets! 1 year tae kwon do(for the kicking),1 year judo(for the grapping) and 2 years of boxing(for the stand up)

  • im not gonna lie, tae kwon do was probably one of the most useless classes i've taken. it was over commercialized and put into the media but it serves almost little to no real sparring technique.

i did 4 years of sanshou boxing(there's kicking in it) and did 2 years of wrestling so far. fun stuff.

  • Tae Kwon Do has the best kicks. You probably got a bad instructor. Anderson Silva has a black belt in TKD. Boxers have the best hands.Judokas have the best throws. When you combine all three. Every area of fighting is addressed. Kickboxing/judo

  • @ramrod20042000 everything but ground game :O

judo don't do much ground work i know. plenty of judo kids on our wrestling team.

  • Muay Thai has the best kicks. Anderson actually has one of the weaker kicks. his low kicks arent brutal and his high kicks havent KOed anyone. its his knees, clinch and his Boxing is what makes his stand up dangerous.

  • those knees and kicks is what gets opponents to the KO...AS is one of the best strickers EVER without question. he's really never had to utilize his high kicks n what not...but his punching n kneeing is all MT.

  • haha...***strikers

  • But boxing isn't the most efficient standup you can do in the street. There are differences between standup used in fighting and standup used in boxing. I used to study tae kwon do for 4 years but moved onto Muay Thai after I was rattled about the legs a few times and kneed to fuck in the clinch at MMA

  • Yes, Muay Thai is just a brutal martial art(leg kicks, knees and elbows) I wish there was a gym near me. Next to Muay Thai .Kickboxing is very good for the streets but not that aerobics kickboxing bullsh%t!

  • you dont need to modify Boxing to make it work in the street, just like someone who does JJ or Judo doesnt need to modify for the street. its when you bring Boxing to another sport like Muay Thai or MMA that you need to modify it.

  • So you're saying that wrestling and leg kicks don't work in the street? Afterall, takedowns and leg kicks are the reason that footwork is modified for mma.

  • never said that. said you dont need to modify Boxing for the street. is a Boxer going to meet and fight a Muay Thai pracitioner in the street? not likely. most people on the street wont go for a takedown and if you do get taken down youre unlucky. im talkigb about street fights, not an MMA match btw.

  • When I was an aba fighter I fought a guy outside school who had done thai since he was young and he kneed the shit out of me and leg kicked me so hard I had to stay home the next day.I've also taken several people down whilst working the door and have seen fight after fight hit the floor. Fighting isn't about luck, its about being properly prepared and not leaving your legs out too far or standing too side on when you're throwing the leather in the street where there's no referee to shout break.

  • Boxing has to be modified greatly to be effective in a street fight. If you think your going to be able to use the Winky Wright peek-a-boo or the Toney/Mayweather shoulder roll in a street fight , you are sadly mistaken.

  • yeah because someone in a street fight is so skilled a Boxer cant knock them out with a combo?

  • I laugh @ BJJ guys who think you don't have to modify BJJ for a streetfight. Try to pull guard on concrete, especially against someone bigger than you, and see what happens. Your either going to get slammed on your head or your going to scrape the shit out of your back. A lot of BJJ moves don't look very attractive when you remove the mat.

  • most BJJ is for the street. what you see in MMA and ADCC arent self defense BJJ. btw pulling guard is a last option and BJJ has great takedowns when it comes to the street. the point is a takedown, mount, neutralize. should they pull guard and do a sub off the back, they got tricks like picking the leg and ankle to stop the slam or hitting them. unless you fight against Quinton Jackson in the street lol

  • Tgunz562 you are right! BJJ is not good for a street fight. Imagine laying on your back trying for a submission? I will stick with my kickboxing and judo.

  • @ramrod20042000 yup because BJJ is only used off your back.

  • lol right....... all bjj players do is pul guard...lmao, I train relson gracie and RELSON wont give a black belt 2ny on who doesnt have their self defence bjj game on point!! first thig we do after warm ups is self defence from standing up!! people who are posting coments about bjj not being for the street doint no what helio was aout frm the start. Compitition bjj is another game.

  • @cobraC510

yeah some are stupid but the street fight scenario doesnt always involved 1 on 1. but yeah most of these guys have never trained. i cant say too much myself i got my blue belt at 19 and quit due to college and partying. which i partied my way out of college so it was a waste. shouldve just stuck with it. have to go somewhere else though he wouldnt have me back after quitting when i told him blue belt was enough for me at the moment

  • @cobraC510

oh yeah hope you meant train WITH relson gracie. i doubt theres many youtubers training a graice. i understand though im sure thats what you meant

  • @ Msmaizie0704 LMAO yea no I dont train master Relson..... I train @ RELSON GRACIE ACADEMY ARIZONA... but Ihope you get back into it... Im no expert either, Ive been training for 6 months and my first Tournament is this Sunday.

  • you do know the BJJ people fight on top to right?

  • @joebeast15 What the fuck are you talking about? Jiu Jitsu is designed to be able to attack from any position. The guard (bottom), side control (either side), mount (to), taking the back (top/bottom).... How many people just just online and talk out of their asses? Way to be "that guy".

  • @275Crimson what the hell are you talking about all I said was that BJJ people fight from the top too, what in gods name is all this shit? I know they do all these positions I actually train BJJ unlike you most likely so I know this shit buddy, keep your face closed you mark trick

  • @joebeast15 You stated "BJJ people" (wherever you picked up that terminology) fight from the top. That is a specific statement, declaring thats jiu jitsu's one position. There was no "too" in there. And as far as training jiu jitsu, yes I've done it (and continue to). I served in the 75th Range Regiment who sends Rangers to the Gracie Academy. I now work for another organization who continues to train us in MMA styles for situations practical to our line of work. Again, way to be "that guy".

  • @275Crimson what the hell are you talking about, I think your "that guy" you are making no sense. And why is it necessary to add in that your a ranger, I don't care if your a ranger, what is that supposed to make me fall over and praise you? Lick dick, you probably do those wack ass Gracie Combative's shit that doesn't work at all, I would mop the floor with your half ass jui-jitsu

  • @joebeast15 Talk, talk, talk

  • @275Crimson talk talk is right bitch thats all you doing too, you mark ass trick

  • @joebeast15 Really? Some more chatter from you? All I do is talk, huh? I'm pretty sure I've established myself in a career field that actually impliments combatives. Where do you train again? What is you do for a living again? Oh, that's right.... you sit on the interenet and quote dave chapelle insults, keyboard hero, and deliver pizza for a living. You become more of a joke everytime you write something.

  • @275Crimson hahaha damn calm down buddy I'm just messing with you, if this is the kind of reaction I get it just makes it fun. Calm down a little chief, where you train at again, I'm serious I'm curious that's all. I'm a Rickson Gracie blue belt by the way.

  • What was it best 2/3?

  • i just had my first judo comp and got owned... im slightly ticked off...

  • dude not to rub it in... i just had my first judo comp and won gold with a rear naked choke

  • @tillmanshoobergoober ya for beginners, sometimes senei's teach too much and don't get you to focus on techniques you like. Definitely stick to 1 or two moves and just only use them if you're even slightly successful with them. So long as you're agressive and try something yoi should win in lower level competition.

  • Black belt doesnt mean anything... every dude can reach it

  • A black belt is the white belt that didnt quit.

  • i thought judo was throws and thats how you get points?

  • they are techniques used to get points. if a throw isnt able to be reached, the round goes to the ground where arm locks and gi chokes r the only things allowed

  • and rear naked chokes and pins

  • i wonder why he wasnt scored ipon [against bj] at 4;20 why do they restart after the armbar instead of straight tap out win are they modified rules many judoka complain that fights arnt let long enough on the ground that they are stood back up to quickly even in the olympics but not the case here it flowed more like bjj .the judoka never footsweep which is their main weapon for attack and set up . just wondering of coarse

  • the other guy didnt initiate the throw.

  • Is that judo or jui-jitsu?

How do you know that's BJ? Amazing if it is!

  • It's a Judo tournement, but BJ is jiu-jitsu.

That's BJ, this is an old/famous video.

He beats them all, but not with Judo :).

  • BJ Penn is amazing, but he was a BJJ brown belt or black belt at this time, but because he did not train Judo they made him wear a white belt to the competition. At least this is how it was explained to me. Still amazing.

  • I know this was before he was a black belt... I thought I had read he was purple at the time...

  • bj isnt a white belt. Hes a black belt. DOH

    Also FEDOR> GSP > Penn

  • u do realize this video is from when he was like 16?

  • If BJ can walk into a judo school and beat all of their black belts in 1 day, shouldn't BJ be awarded a black belt in judo? Why were some of their black belts so weak?

  • Well no, because he wouldn't necessarily know Judo, even if he could be a black belt in Judo. He didnt really do any Judo throws here. Same thing at the time Matt Hughes beat Royce Gracie in UFC, using the same logic, he should have been given whatever degree of black belt royce gracie had since he beat Royce, although I am sure that would never happen since he used his punching to beat up Gracie. A lot of Judo schools focus too much on throwing, either way if BJ did Judo he would be great too.

  • what the fuck lol i could beat that black belt dick he sucks

  • No he doesn't. Look at who he's fighting

  • WOLFPACK MUHFUCKA!!!!! haha. ready for another good weekend bro?

  • WOOF WOOF! haha I've been ready since the minute i left!

  • First of all that guy should not wear a black belt,i see green belts that fights much better,if that white belt guy had a good black belt or a good brown belt he would have gone at 30 seconds

  • "white belt guy" ? you don't know who that is ?

  • yes i know who he is

  • result would have been the same as this video, that is bj motherfucking penn in there

  • i dont think so,that judoka suck bad there are many good judokas who are hard to beat at least in tachi waza
