Was Piaf ill during this concert? Her voice seems somewhat weak and quavering. Notice how she holds the curtain for support. This is somewhat sad to see someone with such a powerful voice begin to weaken. Sad. But I still lover her.
@Koobeful yes, she was very ill by this time. In fact, she had collapsed in previous concerts during this tour. She was less than one year from her death. She was also suffering terribly from rheumatoid arthritis, especially in her wrists, hands and ankles, and feet.. It was almost unbearably painful for her to stand so long for such a recital.
Oh my, it's so good that she knew before her death about her talent. Her smile in the beggining was so true... She needed this, she needed this, she needed "Non, je ne regrette rien" and these last concerts to die. She couldn't end her unhappy life so unhappy way. Love you, Edith :*
minunata persoana, dar se vede o tristete sfasietoare in okii ei,nu mai are pofta de viata.O persoana deosebita shi o voce inegalabila.O admir foarte mult

It's too bad nobody ever filmed Carnegie Hall performances. Her performance at C.H. is spellbinding. It's so amazing in this video to see her become "une fille du port, une ombre de la rue..." (a girl from the docks, a shadow in the street).
I also fell in love with french songs because of Her and learned the language so I could understand the songs. Her voice has a "je ne sais quoi" and you want to listen t o her over and over.
But that is rather naive, with all due respect. If you smoke or drink you are a substance abuser, or dependent (F17.24 in ICD 10 for nicotine dependence). People in all walks of life use and abuse drugs. One shouldn't be surprised or judgmental.
Perhaps you are confusing the idea of use and abuse. abuse is when it has detrimental effects with your day to day life and you're passing out on a daily basis. I personally don't abuse anything.
Either way my original comment was purely observational - hardly judgemental. Why all the rigmorole...
In some respects, she didnt have a chance based on what we know now about chemical dependancy. Heredity: a mother who was a morphine addict and a father who was alcoholic. Lived for a while with a grandmother who gave the young Piaf wine on reg. basis. prescribed cortisone for arthritis before the deleterious effects were as well known (addiction and physical damage). Prescribed morphine for pain after bad car accident.
