Was Piaf ill during this concert? Her voice seems somewhat weak and quavering. Notice how she holds the curtain for support. This is somewhat sad to see someone with such a powerful voice begin to weaken. Sad. But I still lover her.

@Koobeful yes, she was very ill by this time. In fact, she had collapsed in previous concerts during this tour. She was less than one year from her death. She was also suffering terribly from rheumatoid arthritis, especially in her wrists, hands and ankles, and feet.. It was almost unbearably painful for her to stand so long for such a recital.

In some respects, she didnt have a chance based on what we know now about chemical dependancy. Heredity: a mother who was a morphine addict and a father who was alcoholic. Lived for a while with a grandmother who gave the young Piaf wine on reg. basis. prescribed cortisone for arthritis before the deleterious effects were as well known (addiction and physical damage). Prescribed morphine for pain after bad car accident.
