  • My favorite riff 1:45!!!

  • amzing

  • is wotten brazilian and ronaldinho's brotter ??

  • 29 people ain't got no soul.

  • He's got a great alto tone

  • they're playing in 17/16, wow! Very neat. 4+ 4 + 4 +5.

  • @powerchord89 17/16?! I've heard of weird time signatures like 5/8 or 3/2, BUT 17/16?! That's just.. uaheptiuyq037. KEYBOARD MASH

  • @Rizilo It's in 17/8, actually. The name of the tune is The Mad Hatter Rides Again.

  • @HerrFoobert ...IT'S STILL KEYBOARD MASH WORTHY!

  • @powerchord89 The subdivision is 4+3+3 eighth notes. The first set of 4 and 3 are counted as quarter notes, with the final pulse being three eighth notes.

  • @powerchord89

It would be a 4/4 too, a little strange, but it could. The first time you mesure, it's at beat, and the second one upbeat. Though yours is better, or HerrFoobert's...It's easier my way xD

  • Jeff Coffin's beard is just strange

  • It's a crime that some people can't understand this music ,Everyone should be able to admire this!

  • each time i see him, he has a different bas!!! may i have 1??

  • "Too many notes. Just cut a few." Yeah right. The time is always right to hear this stuff.

  • I've seen jeff coffin touring with DMB, he's amazing well and victor there's not much to say about him.,...

  • Dam lol... makes you wanna watch the rest of the concert... :P

  • I Counted 8 1/2. Geez this band never ceases to amaze me, and Jeff Coffin is insane.

  • Maybe it would be easier to not count and just feel it? lol

  • The easiest way to think of it is that there is one normal 4/4 measure followed by another measure with three eighth notes on count 4. That is why he calls it 8 1/2. It's on the album Bloom with his mu'tet. That is a great album BTW.

  • just for all of you trying to figure out what the meter is. He came to my college and played with the jazz studies band i'm in and told us this song is 17 or 8 1/2

  • I'm counting a bar of 8/16 then a bar of 9/16?

  • im counting it as 4 seperate measures. three 4/8's and one 5/8..... or one 6/4 and a 5/8

  • im counting it as 4 seperate measures. three 4/8's and one 5/8..... or one 6/4 and a 5/8

  • im counting it as 4 seperate measures. three 4/8's and one 5/8

  • justin bieber doesn't have a grammy

  • Yeah it's 12/8 I believe.

  • I think its thelonious monk on drums

  • Basista jak i saksofonista super. Dobrało się 2 dobrych grajków. :) Pozdrawiam :)

  • Wow,Empty your Sax.

  • I think it's 8 1/2 if you count slow, or 17 if you count fast.

  • I think it's 8 1/2 if you count slow or 17, if you count fast, haha. Sick.

  • these guys live sooo high. Near Genius. Beautiful. Thanks...

(Brings to mind Roland Kirk and also the saximan from the Blockheads)

  • MOOOOONNNNNSTER!!!!!

  • chills @ 2:00 every time

  • Fuckin Jeff Coffin.. 2 saxes at once. I don't even know where to start with him xD

  • W hat a beauty! I have no idea what you guys (below) are talkin about, just know this is CLASS! Love to all. Smith

  • Look at how AWESOME that venue is!

  • whats the name of this song?

  • @Umidunno1111 mad hatter

  • My respect for both of them, great, great, great!!!

  • i am not a nnig bela fleck fan, just discovered them, love it. what is the instrument the pirate next to the sax player is playing?

  • Future Man plays a "drumtar" - its a rum machine with a guitar neck on it with triggers for the drums on the guitar neck and body. It was a way for him to be able to walk around the stage instead of being confined behind a set.

  • oh my gosh... I think Jeff just had a 4 minute long orgasm.

  • and in Dave Matthews Band his orgasm is of 8 minutes xD

  • this is some solid groove men,

    serious pockets they have dere

  • This so has the feeling of just an impromptu jam. I really hope it is. Regardless, beautiful.

  • HOLY SHIT

  • go pirate!

  • I was at this concert. I also played at this festival. Probably the best concert that I have been to. They opened for Macoy Tyner

  • this is actually Jeff Coffin's song The Mad Hatter Rides Again off of his album Bloom

  • Weeeeeeee! :)

  • what's the genre of this music? its like funk with a oldschool jazz feeling.. I want to hear more of this!

  • 17/8? hahaha

  • man, this shows you how musicians can "connect" IMO

  • @lehdzeppelin that is an invention of Roy "futureman" Wooten's, its the drumitar

  • This song is called "The Mad Hatter Rides Again" by the way

  • umm what is the instrument at 1:40?

  • I hate that stupid drumuitar/drumaxe/whatever that Future Man plays. It and its general MIDI sounds are so corny. The stuff he's playing on it is gold and I know that he's a wicked drummer with acoustic drums; why he insists on using that thing drives me nuts.

With that said...god, these musicians are phenomenal.

  • He's using it 'cause most people love it. If most people hated it already then he would have stopped using it by now, right? Plus, the dude won grammies with that thing. It's not corny then, it's genius.

  • Well, a true artist shouldn't be concerned with what other people think about their work. Artistic endeavors are about honest, personal expression not about becoming famous and receiving the accolades of others. Case in point: the Grammy Awards. A Grammy DOES NOT equal great art.

  • @mattwalker21 Very well put mattwalker21. Such a great, inspiring comment I stole it from you for my gmail chat status message! Hope you don't request royalties cause I ain't got a dime!

  • @mvtubesteak

Thanks, man! Don't worry about any royalty requests; I'll let it slide this time, haha.

  • @mattwalker21 well said, could have not put it better

  • @mattwalker21

i totally agree with you matt..im a bassist and i have many inspirations including victor wooten..but..i dont TRY TO BE LIKE THEM...i TAKE what theve invented..and make it MY OWN....i feel like everyone who plays an instrument should develop their own style and make it their own..no matter what...

  • @mattwalker21 AMEN! im sooo tired of people thinking that just because you receive a piece of metal it means youre a music god. however, its great when musical genius rises above and takes a grammy. (i.e. Herbie Hancock a few years back.) Those times just blow me away

  • @mattwalker21 Sounds like something someone who missed out on a Grammy would say...o.O

  • @Zombbg4 The Grammys are a popularity contest, not a contest of musical/artistic aptitude. Mattwalker21 said it perfectly.

  • @mattwalker21

that's not to say a piece of art can't be awarded a grammy award though right?

  • @mattwalker21 they have 7 grammys

  • @mattwalker21 yeah but correct me if I'm wrong but Bela Fleck and the Flecktones have won Grammys. I think at east 2. I agree with you though.

  • @Jayhoot He never said that Grammy winners are not artists. Simply that just winning a Grammy does not neccesarily imply an artist.

  • 99 % watchers of this video think the same :)

  • @mattwalker21 cannot agree with you more and if you are afraid of playing your own style because you think nobody will like it just remember.... no matter how many thousands or millions of people who hate your music and want to cut your guts out for it there will always be one person somewhere out there in the world who will hear it and it will absolutley change their life. thats what musicians should realize is that your not playing for those who hate but those who can identify with you

  • Truly a ridiculous invention and an even more absurd hat. This guy is fucking out of his mind, yet a crazy genius at the same time. Not genius enough to evade the IRS, though....

  • Haha, was he evading taxes or something?

  • Yeah, I believe his defense involved something about taxes going to puerto rico and the fact that he's from the future.

  • @sn8x Haha one of the funniest comments I've ever read

  • Gfunkasaurus....man I hear u!!!! I played alto from 8th - 12th grade...I picked it up again in the last two years....this cat is blazin!! I never heard of him before this video, best believe I'll never forget his damn name after this!!! Hell, I'm gonna keep playin my alto!! lol..

  • MINCHIAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • Mostly 4/4 + 9/8 (before Bela comes in).

The solo introduction ends with a bar of 4/4 at 0:52, followed 3/4 + 9/8 where melody comes in, then continues with the regular 4/4 + 9/8.

There are several spots where they do two bars of 4/4 instead of 4/4 + 9/8 (usually at transition points from solo to melody, or vice versa).

When Bela comes in, they vamp the pattern of 4/4-5/4-4/4-4/4. Then it's back to the 4/4 + 9/8 groove.

Thought this might help some of those aspiring rhythm junkies out there...

  • @Scrivalicious I think at the melody and solos it's generally 4/4+3/4+3/8, not 4/4+3/4+9/8. You're right about the vamp and the end though

  • @cascadecrash527 Oh, I think I wasn't very clear. I agree it's generally in 4/4+3/4+3/8, which is what I meant when I said it's mostly in 4/4+9/8 (you could think of 3/4+3/8 as a kind of 9/8). The 4/4+3/4+9/8 thing you mentioned only happens at the spot when the melody comes in the first time, which I explained rather poorly in my previous post.

    Thanks!

  • Does anybody know what the pedals are that Vic is using in this video?

  • what are you guys talking about vic is the genuis

  • dude, every member of the flecktones is well beyond the level of genious. I saw them in Glasgow acouple o years back and the whole crowd (entirely populated by musicians) spent the whole gig dribbling on the floor in awe. Every one of them is a legend. Bela playing paganini and bach on a feckin 5 string banjo, jeff coffin harmonising runs on TWO saxophones, Victor and his thumbtasticness and Futureman's synthaxe drumitar they're mind blowing. And all the rest of the menagery. Legenscary muso's

  • wooooow, jeff coffin is amazing :O he plays like machine.... God, what do I have to pay, that I can play like him?^^ also victor wooten is "not human"... these guys are crazy xD

  • got to meet jeff coffin last year he came and did a workshop in my school, and we pretty much listened to a wild solo for 45 minutes

  • What a fuckin' funky hot bass groove!!!!!!!! The sax player is another fucking genius.

  • So funky fresh!

  • Is that cold sweat ?

    Great performance very nice !

  • This song is called Mad Hatter

  • 1:02 that little thing he did there was diirty, i love coffin

  • these guys are garbage.... just a couple amatures, trying to impress :P jokes. i honestly jizzed in my pants serveral times while listing to this song. this song makes life a fun thing...

  • muuuuuuuuuu buenos........oleeeeeeee.

  • hell yes

  • neeed bass tabs!!! =)

  • glad i wasnt the first person to notice the odd time (love it)

  • i like VW's bass

  • who gives a shit the measure there playing in, just shutup and listen to the flecktones

  • They obviously do or they wouldn't be talking about it...don't be such an arse.

  • @BelaFleckPhan

If people didn't analyze why music sounds good, we'd still be listening to Gregorian chants.

  • Is this 17/8?

  • I think it might be 15/8. Although it gets hard to count, I'm getting a measure of 4/4, then one of 9/8. So you can either consider it alternating or 15/8 (by my count, at least)

  • its 17/8

  • Alright, I must just missing a beat somewhere. I hate having to count weird time signatures (like figuring out the meter of Tool songs...) Love the sound, hating doing the math.

  • @homerpalooza101

Tool has nothing on Dream Theater. If you haven't already, listen to "The Dance of Eternity". Something like 120 meter changes and 5 tempo changes in 6 minutes.

  • Yes, Dream Theater is fantastic, personally I like Tool more, but I totally understand where you're coming from. I just don't want a huge "which band is better" debate going on here. Let's just enjoy the music of the Flecktones (now that we know the time signature)

  • Agreed. And also I think that musical debates on "who's better" are for the most part pointless. Music is by nature subjective. By "Tool has nothing on Dream Theater" I was talking about use of odd meter. I also love Tool. I wasn't putting them down, sorry for the confusion.

  • I reckon if you put Mike Portnoi on drums, Futureman on synthaxe percussion, Victor on bass with Bela and Petrucci having a guitar/banjo-off, a massive black hole would appear and rip the space time continuum into teeny little pieces. I can't decide whether musicians of this caliber make me want to never put down my instruments or give up all together. peace

  • ya i got this as well... one 4/4 and one 9/8

saying 17/8 just isnt common :P

  • Wow, I'm an idiot. I counted it right, but for some reason I can't add...8+9=17, not 15....

  • woooooow!!! the sax is baaaad!!

  • wow i cant count this at all

  • this band will be in Kalamazoo (Michigan)

Dec. 11th, State Theatre!! check 'em out.

    PEACE

  • bass.... and bela fleck plays a banjo
