@powerchord89 The subdivision is 4+3+3 eighth notes. The first set of 4 and 3 are counted as quarter notes, with the final pulse being three eighth notes.
It would be a 4/4 too, a little strange, but it could. The first time you mesure, it's at beat, and the second one upbeat. Though yours is better, or HerrFoobert's...It's easier my way xD
I got to meet jeff before a dmb concert at jones beach in 09. We were in there real early and he was way up front duckin down low trying to hide a bit and chek out the opening act. Hes a great guy. The easiest way to think of it is that there is one normal 4/4 measure followed by another measure with three eighth notes on count 4. That is why he calls it 8 1/2. It's on the album Bloom with his mu'tet. That is a great album BTW.
just for all of you trying to figure out what the meter is. He came to my college and played with the jazz studies band i'm in and told us this song is 17 or 8 1/2
i think haters just go around u tube and just hit the dislike button just to piss people off,,, cause there is absolutly no way you cant like this music
Future Man plays a "drumtar" - its a rum machine with a guitar neck on it with triggers for the drums on the guitar neck and body. It was a way for him to be able to walk around the stage instead of being confined behind a set.
I hate that stupid drumuitar/drumaxe/whatever that Future Man plays. It and its general MIDI sounds are so corny. The stuff he's playing on it is gold and I know that he's a wicked drummer with acoustic drums; why he insists on using that thing drives me nuts.
With that said...god, these musicians are phenomenal.
He's using it 'cause most people love it. If most people hated it already then he would have stopped using it by now, right? Plus, the dude won grammies with that thing. It's not corny then, it's genius.
Well, a true artist shouldn't be concerned with what other people think about their work. Artistic endeavors are about honest, personal expression not about becoming famous and receiving the accolades of others. Case in point: the Grammy Awards. A Grammy DOES NOT equal great art.
@mattwalker21 Very well put mattwalker21. Such a great, inspiring comment I stole it from you for my gmail chat status message! Hope you don't request royalties cause I ain't got a dime!
i totally agree with you matt..im a bassist and i have many inspirations including victor wooten..but..i dont TRY TO BE LIKE THEM...i TAKE what theve invented..and make it MY OWN....i feel like everyone who plays an instrument should develop their own style and make it their own..no matter what...
@mattwalker21 AMEN! im sooo tired of people thinking that just because you receive a piece of metal it means youre a music god. however, its great when musical genius rises above and takes a grammy. (i.e. Herbie Hancock a few years back.) Those times just blow me away
@mattwalker21 cannot agree with you more and if you are afraid of playing your own style because you think nobody will like it just remember.... no matter how many thousands or millions of people who hate your music and want to cut your guts out for it there will always be one person somewhere out there in the world who will hear it and it will absolutley change their life. thats what musicians should realize is that your not playing for those who hate but those who can identify with you
Truly a ridiculous invention and an even more absurd hat. This guy is fucking out of his mind, yet a crazy genius at the same time. Not genius enough to evade the IRS, though....

@cascadecrash527 Oh, I think I wasn't very clear. I agree it's generally in 4/4+3/4+3/8, which is what I meant when I said it's mostly in 4/4+9/8 (you could think of 3/4+3/8 as a kind of 9/8). The 4/4+3/4+9/8 thing you mentioned only happens at the spot when the melody comes in the first time, which I explained rather poorly in my previous post.
dude, every member of the flecktones is well beyond the level of genious. I saw them in Glasgow acouple o years back and the whole crowd (entirely populated by musicians) spent the whole gig dribbling on the floor in awe. Every one of them is a legend. And all the rest of the menagery. Legenscary muso's

Alright, I must just missing a beat somewhere. I hate having to count weird time signatures (like figuring out the meter of Tool songs...) Love the sound, hating doing the math.
Tool has nothing on Dream Theater. If you haven't already, listen to "The Dance of Eternity". Something like 120 meter changes and 5 tempo changes in 6 minutes.
Yes, Dream Theater is fantastic, personally I like Tool more, but I totally understand where you're coming from. I just don't want a huge "which band is better" debate going on here. Let's just enjoy the music of the Flecktones (now that we know the time signature)
Agreed. And also I think that musical debates on "who's better" are for the most part pointless. Music is by nature subjective. By "Tool has nothing on Dream Theater" I was talking about use of odd meter. I also love Tool. I wasn't putting them down, sorry for the confusion.
I reckon if you put Mike Portnoi on drums, Futureman on synthaxe percussion, Victor on bass with Bela and Petrucci having a guitar/banjo-off, a massive black hole would appear and rip the space time continuum into teeny little pieces. I can't decide whether musicians of this caliber make me want to never put down my instruments or give up all together. peace

Mostly 4/4 + 9/8 (before Bela comes in).
The solo introduction ends with a bar of 4/4 at 0:52, followed 3/4 + 9/8 where melody comes in, then continues with the regular 4/4 + 9/8.
There are several spots where they do two bars of 4/4 instead of 4/4 + 9/8 (usually at transition points from solo to melody, or vice versa).
When Bela comes in, they vamp the pattern of 4/4-5/4-4/4-4/4. Then it's back to the 4/4 + 9/8 groove.
Thought this might help some of those aspiring rhythm junkies out there...
Scrivalicious 2 years ago
@Scrivalicious I think at the melody and solos it's generally 4/4+3/4+3/8, not 4/4+3/4+9/8. You're right about the vamp and the end though

I can't decide whether musicians of this caliber make me want to never put down my instruments or give up all together. peace

Wow, I'm an idiot. I counted it right, but for some reason I can't add...8+9=17, not 15....
