It's the world of Gaia. You can make things disappear and reappear with the simple thought of it. Kind of how like Summons and Magic works. At least that's how I like to believe as. Thinking about it hurts my head.

The character class called sorcerer are warriors that can cast magic on their swords and perform attacks with the power of the spell. Sephiroth is a sorceror or so it seems. In FF VII the Added Effect Materia could be used in a combo slot with a Magic materia such as Bio, Transform, or Elemental materia with other magic Materia such as ice or fire. (ref: Wikipedia). In AC he pulls hs sword flaming out of thin air.
